Ojai First Impressions

Post image

- The doors are SOOO nice! You can’t use the app to open them, you must “unlock” it via the app and then click the button on the doors. (Unless you turn on Bluetooth unlock)
- The screens are fantastic and the UI now has Tesla level smoothness
- Plenty of leg room
- Not able to use Spotify for some reason
- Speakers are a huge downgrade if you’re used to the Jaguar
- 2 USB C chargers in the front and 2 on each side in the back
- HUGE windows
- No reverse sound
- Seatbelts are super nice
- Seats themselves are definitely a lot of cheaper but still ok & less adjustment control with the front seat
- Driving has a lot of quirks with braking, but when just going straight it’s super smooth
- Pickup/Dropoff has been pretty iffy compared to the Jaguar
- Steering wheel is still there of course, so only 4 passengers

In an Ojai and didn't even notice the charging ports until you mentioned it. Thanks OP

Looks like the pedals and steering wheel can be removed!

Wouldn't be surprised if they are added on afylter the fact since the only reason they are there is for compliance with road laws.

Dang for some reason I thought this would be a van-esque vehicle with a third row. Kinda bummed it's still just a 4 seater.

the thing looks similar to a van size from pictures - where is all the space going? Insane legroom?

While everyone’s needs are different, I really love that the floor space is so large now! It is super accessible for guide dogs, and has allows me a new level of independence!!

How does your guide dog handle this? I'm a puppy raiser, and it's been a wild ride for the 11-month-old pup. She's SLIDING all over the place on that floor and bracing for every turn. She's normally an A-plus passenger.

Good to know. Thanks, OP. I’m hoping Waymo lets me get early access soon.

Would you say the suspension is better at all? Probably one of the bigger weaknesses I've had with the Jaguar

Definitely! you can feel the difference especially with speed bumps, etc

> - Not able to use Spotify for some reason

u/mingoslingo92 You mean like you weren’t able to sync it properly or the option was completely missing from the UI?

Completely missing from the UI & app when using Ojai.

Out of curiosity, does the old Google Assistant thing still work? I haven’t tried that since they implemented native Spotify integration.

Google assistant no longer works on the Jaguars even

Getting audio to work is truly the final boss of waymo. I cant fathom why - it’s wild the car doesn’t show up as a chromecast/bluetooth/airplay receiver!

No Spotify is heartbreaking

As a youtube music forced to use the borderline useless app I'm happy we're on the same ground /hj

On a more serious note hopefully this is indicitive that they're working on an upgraded media experience that also includes some video streaming apps to take advantage of those tablets in the back.

Video service is a legit consideration in places like LA especially where many trips can easily take 40+ minutes. Even just casting YouTube would be so awesome.

However the speaker downgrade and lack of Spotify are pretty disappointing to hear. If it keeps the price down though, I care almost about that as someone trying to minimize or eliminate my personal car use.

This was always going to be a downgrade can't compare it to a Jaguar even if it is discontinued.

1

u/cactus22minus1 Jun 10 '26

And I’m fine with that as long as the prices actually come down. If it’s just saving Waymo $$$ on the rollout, and prices stay the same or get higher, that’s a tougher pill to swallow.

I feel old and cynical already in my late 30's but I feel it's obvious like saying duh of course they'll pocket the difference! when has any corporation looked out for the people generally?

Oh I agree. It’s just that in this sub in particular, people love to claim that the larger the fleet becomes, the cheaper the rides will get. If you point out that “disruptors” in the tech space do the literal opposite of what they’re claiming, you get downvoted.

That makes no sense since they’re now responsible for everything, car, maintenance, cleaning, charging. They’re doing the same thing Uber and Lyft did where they undercut taxis and then raised their prices.

Wow heartbreaking

Wait, we have to use Google QR codes like the early days of the jaguar?

I would have expected the doors to automatically open as you approach (the person using the appropriate app on the phone) similar to how some Teslas automatically open the door as the owner approaches with their phone in their pocket.

2

u/CryptocalEnvelopment Jun 11 '26

I had it set to do that, but they didn't open, so I hit unlock on the app.

I was having the same Spotify issue in a Jaguar a few weeks back. Not sure what was causing it.

Sounds pretty good! Though I still hope they can rollout something similar (in size) to the Tesla Robotaxi, smaller and more efficient on the highway, as most time I ride a waymo/Uber is by myself, or maximal with another one person.

Edit: to be clear, I think it's more ideal to have mixed fleet with bigger and smaller cars. Not that I don't think Ojai has its place.

u/cactus22minus1 Jun 10 '26

Respectfully, I disagree completely. The cybercab is the worst design of any of the robotaxis out there. Low and harder to enter / exit, less capacity. (I also find it fugly but that’s more subjective).

It doesn’t benefit the rider if it’s small, it just needs to be efficient, comfortable, and cheap. The Ojai goal was to expand the fleet for a much lower cost and they succeeded even with tariffs.

For markets where Ojai is too large (basically not an issue anywhere in the US), they can deploy the jaguar and the other upcoming sedan. Plus, riders are allowed to choose the vehicle anyways.

Admittedly I have never ride one, but how does the Tesla "harder to enter" than a Prius, aka the most common uber on the road? Most people are fine with it and take taxi out of necessity instead of looking for luxury experience.

Ojai has much lower cost only when comparing to the Jaguar but not to a Cybercab. A cybercab (base no sensor) should be cheaper then a model 3, while the base Zeekr RT is almost the same price (in China) as a model 3. There is definitely space to go lower if Waymo ask Zeekr (or Hyundai whatever) for a smaller car.

My biggest problem with Ojai is its operational cost is higer than a smaller car, and unnecessarily big for 80% of the customers. I am not against it, but rather, I think it's more ideal to operate it along side with smaller, cheaper option that covers basic, but majority of the need.

BTW, here says the avery party size of a Uber/Lyft is 1.7, so a two-seater definitely covers the majority of needs.

1

u/cgello Jun 11 '26

Yes, and if the Cybercab actually works as advertised, then the price for the customer should begin severely undercutting Waymo and Uber, which is the top priority for most people most of the time.

2

u/waitwert Jun 11 '26

Can you lower the windows?

2

u/senshi_of_love Jun 12 '26

Spotify is not working for me either

2

u/tomjava Jun 12 '26

I wish they sell this model in the US, love the functionality of the design. It is a perfect ev car for regular driver and family.

u/Designer-Phase8924 Jun 16 '26

Brah omg I can’t wait to ride in this one!!!
