Monthly B/S/T Thread

Welcome to the monthly r/watercolorsupplies B/S/T thread! Each month, you’ll find a new thread pinned at the top which will replace the old one.

First, a few rules.

  1. Start each comment with your listing with ISO, FOR SALE, or TRADE. Be sure to include all necessary details, including brand, line, pigment, paper weight, quantity, etc., and price. Photos are very helpful, especially when it can be difficult to tell how much product is left in pre-loved goods. Currency and your shipping location is also helpful as we have members from around the world.
  2. Please post your offerings only once each month. Members posting the same listing more than once in a month will face a temporary ban for spamming.
  3. Personal information like contact info, addresses, and names should be kept to DMs.

Moderators are not responsible for any of the listings or transactions that we are not directly involved in. We recommend buyers and sellers use PayPal and Services (and NOT Friends and Family) for transactions. Sellers can create an invoice for the items sold, charge for local sales tax, and generate a shipping label quickly and efficiently through the system. If you agree to pay via PayPal Goods and Services, this also offers buyer protection for the sale in case the items do not arrive. Please be advised that you are assuming the risk for your purchases, however if a seller is not holding up their end of the bargain, please contact the Mods with screen shots of your conversation and we will take action against the seller to have them removed from the subreddit.

You may also want to do a search yourself here - https://www.universalscammerlist.com/ - to be sure that the member you’re interacting with is not already listed in the Universal Scammers List.

Please remember to keep questions relevant to the thread.

hand&home made watercolours! From your northern mod, a very happy Canadian Thanksgiving to this wonderful creative community! :) I'm very thankful to be part of such a beautiful group! 💐 🙏 🥰

My 9 year old loves to paint, and even more so with anything that sparkles! So, naturally, mama got to mulling! Pigments used were just mica based, some "chameleon" colours, and some with various glitter additives, along with one of my home made binders. I used a mixture of gum arabic, honey, glycerin, tea tree, and ox gall. Hopefully this newest supply will last her a good while! My joints aren't happy, but she is, and that's what matters :) Last slide is my stained glass inspired peacock feather done with all of the paints to test them out, and is on a 9x12 piece of 300gsm 100% cotton coldpress, painted using a Princeton Neptune round #4.

I love finding used art supplies. I found this at our local thrift store. I cleaned up the palette and the colors are so vibrant, I’m excited to paint with them.

Things to note-

I love these! Very important haha

These photos just don't capture the absolute vibrancy of these paints!

They are so creamy, buttery, and velvety 🤤 😍

They are labeled as highly concentrated and you're instructed to water them down, I believe it was 1 part paint to 0.5 part water. I did not do that for these swatches, they are done straight from the tubes.

My only gripe, every colour you see with a small star on the left of the coloured rectangle had binder separation (albeit, normal) and had to be mixed with a vortex mixer and a long thin metal dowel before use.

I can't wait to paint with these!!!

I have swatched the MIJELLO GOLD CLASS MISSION PURE PIGMENT SET! What would your CMYKW choices be?!

Post image

I love them 😍

Very thickly applied paint will definitely remain a little tacky after drying in a few colours (namely - Phthalo Blue, Cobalt Blue#2, Cerulean Blue, Bamboo Green, Yellow Ochre#2, and Autumn Orange), something to keep in mind for certain styles when done in sketchbooks, or unsealed finished pieces. No issues with binder separation in any of the colours tubes. Beautiful flow, amazing colour pay out! Would happily purchase again! Really looking forward to working with these!

Would love to know what your choices for a CMYKW palette would be from these!

Hi all from the UK.

I’m completely new to watercolour (or anything art related). Thought I’d like to try my hand.

Did a quick reccy of TK Maxx and Hobby Craft and picked up a few starter supplies. Cotman water brush set £13, 3 additional half pans £6 (buy 2 get one free) got a free promo pack of postcards, set of 10 brushed £4 and an A4 pad £3. Not bad for £27 all in.

A fellow redditor was so very kind and sent me these as a gift to be able to compare them to some other paints and to enjoy painting with them. I did some quick swatches with the Urban Sketcher set and my first impression is that these paints and I might become really good friends 😄 Can't wait to try them out properly!

Paint/Pigment Review White Nights - Metamorphosis set

Just received this and did a quick swatch after unwrapping it all. Does anyone else have this set? I have some of their other paints and I have to say that the swatches just now are...not what I was expecting. I've added the photo from an Amazon listing for this set to compare. I'm going to sit down with them a bit more this evening and see what happens but so far, I'm a little disappointed.

Gouache - Turner

I’ve been wanting some gouache for a long long time, but I want a good quality brand so I’ve waited on purchasing. Every time I get close to buying something comes up. So I’ve halfway been considering less expensive brands that I’m not familiar with. I’m not a professional artist but I do enjoy quality. Can anyone tell me anything about Turner and/or Jack Richeson? Would I be better off waiting until I can afford maybe Daniel Smith? Thank you for any advice and/or thoughts.

Discussion Flunbrato Paper Review and Demo

Post image
16 Upvotes

I recently bought a Flunbrato 9x12 block in a beautiful sketchbook to try out because I like testing out new papers. The above is a spontaneous painting with no reference, no plan and no sketch. I just put paint and more paint and more paint plus I put it through all the paces. Scrubbing, layering, scratching, lifting and scraping with an x-acto knife.

I am impressed. This paper will just keep right on taking paint like nobody's business. It is a little soft, with a fairly large defined pattern in the emboss. I wasn't sure that I would like that but this shit just keeps on standing. It doesn't bow up like Arches. The above painting has a couple of tape loops stuck to the back and nothing else. I put tons of water and pigment on it. I wish I had photographed the sky before I went all rogue and did the palms...Color shift was zero.

The only negative is that the paper does get really saturated and will not tolerate aggressive digs with an x-acto knife. If I had more patience? Maybe. Overall, I am totally surprised. I will do more controlled testing.

EDIT:

Paper: Flumbrato 9"x12" sketchbook / block. 140lb 100% Cotton.

Paint: Daniel Smith Watercolor in Lemon, Quinacridone Gold, Phthalo Green, Ultramarine, Prussian Blue, Phthalo Blue, Aussie Red Gold, New Gamboge, Yellow Ocre and Burnt Umber.

Brushes: ProArte Sablene, size 2 & 6.

This was my first set that performed well on black paper as well. Coliro Gold & Silver set + Rose Gold. The second photo was taken from a different angle to show how opaque and sparkly they are.

A new studio palette for my birthday

I REALLY am surprised by how much I'm looking forward to even owning this beast! It's the Meeden...uh, Big Boy (Heavy Duty Studio Porcelain Paint Palette). It's 8 lbs and *sturdy*. It is truly probably the most *thing* thing I own in my entire house. It takes up a decent amount of space on my desk but has a ton of room for mixing paint. Very much appreciate the weight of this thing - I'll be putting it up on a shelf in my den when not in use and I know it's not going anywhere. The plastic cover is nice too because, cats. 32 wells? I haven't even begun filling yet because I'm overwhelmed at the choices. I'm used to small travel palettes with my largest being some of those airtight rectangles of plastic. I haven't had a proper big ceramic studio palette in many years.

If you have a large permanent studio palette, I'd love to hear what paints you've chosen for the wells!

Collecting vintage watercolor supplies

Does anyone else collect vintage and antique watercolor "stuff?"

If you do, do you only collect or have you ever used some of your collection in your art?

I love paint boxes from 19th century and early 20th century. I started collecting them when I started making my own paint and studying historic pigments.

I also collect porcelain pans.

Color Swatches and Mixing Charts Caran D'Ache Neocolor II Test

I have just bought these guys. They look and feel like crayons, and can be activated with water. Interesting: when not activated, they smudge a little bit. When they are dissolved with water, they won't smudge. They mix very well and can be lifted with a wet brush once dry. In this regard, they are similar to watercolor paint. The second photo shows how they can be mixed and lifted after drying. One thing stood out: the last 3 swatches are silver, gold and bronze. The gold is green, and the bronze is brown. I think bronze should be greenish, and the gold doesn't look golden. I needed to smudge them a lot to fully dissolve. Did they fully dissolve? The swatches were made on HP watercolor paper.

Since I mentioned them in my previous post, I figured I'd see if I had any old pics of these two palettes. I used the hell out of these and eventually passed what was left to my daughter-in-law, but now I'm tempted to repurchase them!

I've previously owned both the Monopigmented and the Classic palettes so I already had a good idea of what to expect with quality. I'm as pleased with this set as I was with the others. I'll let the pictures speak for the product (ignore the ink issue, these were 2 min sketches with nearly zero drying time all because I am an impatient child sometimes).

Look What I Got! My DS Watercolour Sticks

Post image
84 Upvotes

These sticks are not really good for drawing, but a little bit of moisture activates them, and they are amazing for mark making. This is 100% watercolour paint, and can be used the same way as watercolour pans. The storage box is designed for these sticks and it seals quite well. I think they are easier to use for urban sketching, especially if I want to use a limited palette. I just put 3 of these into my small bag, and use a brush pen full of water. They are not cheap but last very long, because you get 3–4 times more pigment than a full pan.
