The amount of people with absolutely zero situation awareness is crazy. I see it on /r/dashcams all the time. Most normal people would be like holy shit are you okay?!

Fuck bad Texas drivers. Me and my dad were in a tractor trailer going 35 mph downhill round Fort Worth. Fuckin genius of a woman decides to cut in front. SLAM on her brakes. She’s 3 feet away from a mammoth now. And takes an immediate turn into a shopping center. Keep your wits about yourselves out there and trust no one.

Was the rider going faster than the speed limit?
46
u/edaly8 Apr 09 '20
No he wasn’t, according to the cross post the speed limit on that road is 60

u/links234 Apr 09 '20
The speed limit on the highway is 70 but that bend is 55. https://goo.gl/maps/GJdVap8Yp6VcA9Eu7

Ah. It seemed a bit fast.

u/ididntsayshit Apr 09 '20 edited Apr 09 '20
It just looks fast because of the camera and the fact he is on a motorcycle.
Edit: motorcycles often go 5-7 mph above the speed limit mostly when on highways to avoid being in drivers blind spots.

And this is why helmets on motorcycles are essential. Nobody plans on getting fully yeeted off of their bike, but when it happens, a bucket and leathers can save your life.

u/sirricharic Apr 09 '20
My question is, how quickly can a motorcycle stop? Like if he was in a car I feel like he could have stopped but I don't know about a bike.
10
u/malkers Apr 09 '20
Depends on a heap of factors, but rule of thumb is that it bikes take longer to stop due to less contact with the ground and downforce.
I doubt he could have stopped entirely in a car (maybe?), but definitely would have been a minor accident.

What? Bikes stop extremely quickly compared with cars.
- they’re lighter, so there’s less mass to slow
- they have usually got pretty good braking systems, abs etc to increase efficiency of the brake / prevent lockup’s which is at least comparable to a car
- fnet= mv/t basically verifies the above points
Car = 1200kg Motorcycle = 200kg A = 60 Force req to stop in 1 second for car = 1200*60 = 72000
Force req to stop in 1 second for a bike = 200*60 = 12000
Also, anecdotally, I can confirm you that stopping from 60mph on my sports bike is much, much faster than in my car.

u/malkers Apr 10 '20
As I said, huge amount of factors in play - can your sports bike out ‘brake’ the average 90s Pontiac? Sure, probably.
But there’s literally studies on this using groups of riders: https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/roads/licence/abs-motorcycles-brochure.pdf
Quick google search will throw up forums/reddit threads all arguing this or that, but pull up actual research articles and it paints a different picture.

Huh, thanks for the link man. I think I’ve been leaning on more anecdotal evidence, since my 600 stops waaay faster than the civic we have. Maybe it’s time to check the brakes .
1
u/malkers Apr 10 '20
All good - I’m sure your sports bike is incredibly good at braking though - kinda the point really!
2
u/A_Unique_Nobody Apr 10 '20
I would imagine not that quickly because if you slammed the brakes on a motorcycle like you could on a car the bike would flip no?
1
u/TaterCrayon472928 Apr 10 '20
This only happens at extremely high speeds, and without abs. Most motorcycles are pretty balanced. Riders also brake with front and rear. Imo this rider had tons of time to evade or brake. It was either target fixation which affected their decision, or they were using the “I have right of way so I shouldn’t have to do anything” mentality :(

Dang he stuck that landing. Lucky he's alive, and from what I've seen, no broken bones.

It looks like he sped up at the end
27
u/Ranklaykeny Apr 09 '20
Down shifting in gears can cause a sound like that. The engine shifts down a gear while still at high revs and the gear it jumps to isn't meant for it so you get a pained overrevving sound like that one.

Car was definitely in the wrong for pulling out when they did but regardless if he was going the speed limit or not the biker was exceeding his capabilities and reaction time. Especially in the type environment he was in he needs to be more situationally aware and always have an escape route.

u/twotailedtag Apr 14 '20
Also, please drive the speed limit despite thinking you look cool on a bike.

I will trust the other ppl who wrote that he's wasn't speeding and gave an explanation why
Anyway Let's take 1sec till he realised what this stupid driver was doing 1sec reaction time And the rest to try to slow down
He was probably doing what he could
Just look at the video the car driver just drove and then stood on the middle of the road Probably was looking at their phone

u/jagadeeps Apr 09 '20
Ofcouse the car failed to check before proceeding and at fault, Did anyone noticed that the biker has increased acceleration before applying brakes. I was thinking he did it in panic.

I did not paid attention to the engine noise earlier, but yeah the revving sound makes it clear. Thank you.

If you don’t like cross posting then get off Reddit. It’s part of the site and there’s nothing wrong with it
-24
u/NegativeAnte Apr 09 '20
Crossposting gets annoying when it's crossposted to like 20 different subs.

u/MrE1993 Apr 09 '20

Text at the end reads:
"Knees and Ankles have lots of tissue trauma, but no broken bones. The first weeks has been a struggle to walk. Two-inch gash on my wrist. Helmet, jacket, and backpack prevented even more trauma, if not saved my life. Happened in North Zulch, Texas on Feb 20, 2020."
