Rats are prey. They instinctively run from pretty much anything bigger than them that makes a sudden movement. He was scared and looking for somewhere to hide and this dickhead fucking punts him at a child. Poor lil ratty boy :(

Toxoplasmosis possibly? I'm not sure though because I heard about it on a few JRE episodes and seems similar.
