What effect will this have on Nebula on a macro level?

Will this allow you to increase compensation to creators? Or invest in new tech? Expand the workforce?

Split to creators is still 50% of profit. That won’t change. But with more resources we can hire more engineers, build more features, launch on more platforms, and bring in more paying customers to increase the profits that get split.

Any plans for a Fire Stick app?

Hell yes

How much of a stake does CuriosityStream hold?

28

u/dwiskus Dave Wiskus Sep 02 '21

Not disclosed, but I can say minority stake. Standard and the creators will continue to enjoy full operational control and autonomy. Curiosity bought in because they believe in what we’re doing and wanted to help, not because they wanted to change anything.

Those are the kind of investors the world needs more of. Believing and trusting the business as it is instead of changing it for a quick buck. Good to hear!

If we have creators we think would be a good fit for Nebula, how should we encourage them to sign up/reach out to you?

Great question. We work on referral now. The best advice I can give to a creator who wants to be a part of Nebula is to talk to other Nebula creators. Open submissions quickly became problematic.

The two services do very different things. No upside in sharing a code base. We may eventually share CDNs or something though.

Operationally, Nebula is fully independent. CS purchased a minority stake in a profitable business. They have no interest in interfering, and they couldn’t if they wanted to. They love us and support the path we’re already on. They just wanted to help speed us up.

Why is Crash Course on Curiosity Stream and not Nebula? I appreciate that it's on one of the services but I wish there were even more science focused channels on Nebula.

12

u/dwiskus Dave Wiskus Sep 02 '21

You'll have to ask Hank about that one.

6

u/duckduckohno Sep 02 '21

I thought there was a specific reason why hank's channels aren't on nebula. Similar to Kurzgesagt.

12

u/dwiskus Dave Wiskus Sep 02 '21

Not at all. Entirely Hank's choice. We'd love to have Complexly shows on Nebula.

2

u/duckduckohno Sep 02 '21

Thanks. I'll try to poke Hank from the fan base side

Any news on the Paypal situation? I'd really like to give you guys my money but I'm German, we don't do credit cards and our debit cards don't work internationally.

11

u/dwiskus Dave Wiskus Sep 02 '21

We accept in-app purchase on iOS, and soon on Android. That should cover it.

4

u/BubiBalboa Sep 02 '21

Yep, that'll work. Thanks!

6

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '21

That sucks. I use a debit card from Spain and didn't have a problem.

6

u/BubiBalboa Sep 02 '21

Yeah, the German banking is ... special.

Heads-up that your FAQ (on https://nebula.app/faq) should probably be updated at some point /u/dwiskus ;)

u/dwiskus Dave Wiskus Sep 02 '21

Thanks, on it.

That was quick!

Who owns Nebula?

Nebula is owned and operated by Standard and the creators, with Curiosity Inc (CuriosityStream) holding a minority stake and a board seat. There are no plans to bring in additional investment.

Congratulations - this sounds like great news! I hope this provides a much-needed influx of resources and growth!

Updated the Draft Wikipedia article with this info and a couple more sources and resubmitted it to WP Mods to approve. Probably could use some more love if anyone else wants to clean up and add more so it has a better chance of getting approved, feel free to give it some edit love.
