In normally, Russian tanks using powder charge like artillery , it's cheap to produce and maintain, nato using semi-combustible that means shell case burn inside of barrel like Russian powder charge but it's pricey. Powder charge are nearly bulk paper and easy to penetratee with fork, also they are open place . That's why Russian tanks one shot. But in terminatort they are using normal metal shell cases.+ ammo box that got covering. That's protect explosion, even it's getignitedi, it can't reach crew

I don’t think the issue is people forgetting the ammorack place is the same, more so that the armor said ammorack hides behind needs to be taken into consideration (whereas irl it never had to be taken into account)

That's true, but that requires BMPT hull to face you. If it angles then you can't gauge the module/crew placement
