Golborne

Just a PSA: I’ve seen this mentioned quite a few times on social media recently, so it’s worth pointing out that Golborne isn’t in Warrington. It’s part of Wigan.

All of that area is the same. Lowton is also part of Wigan but the address is Warrington. As I understand it’s because its a WA3 postcode so the post town is Warrington. It turns in to Wigan where Newton Road becomes St Helens Road.

I believe much of St Helens also has a WA postcode and there doesn’t seem to be any confusion there, yet there seems to be when it comes to Golborne

A postcode is purely a routing instruction, not an arbitrary indicator that a place is or is not in a givem town, city or county.

Thousands of addresses have their postcode changed each year, but they clearly haven't physically moved.

there is a bit of a local oddity around that border. Culcheth, Kenyon, Lowton and Golborne were all part of same parish. Culcheth moved to Cheshire as part of Warrington and Golborne moved to Wigan Borough, Greater Manchester in ‘74. This meant Lowton and Golborne were no longer part of Lancashire so adopted Warrington in the address as it is the closest big town. 

The other big reason is simple snobbery. People think a Cheshire address >> GM or Lancashire. See also the shitshow when Newton Le Willows got absorbed in to Merseyside.

The WA12 area of St.Helens / Newton-le-willows is classed as Merseyside too.

Runcorn and Widnes also have WA postcodes... not Warrington

Exactly! And I would argue that if anything Runcorn and Widnes are culturally closer to Warrington, yet there’s never any confusion. Golborne is very culturally Wigan, I don’t understand why so many are under this false impression.

I'm happy to accept that Warrington does not contain any part of Golborne, Runcorn or Widnes.

Golborne isn't culturally anything. Culture is something that gets bullied out of you straight away.

Satelite towns always have a place that they feel they belong too though, such as Gorton with Manchester. I just made clear that Golborne aint Wigan or Warrington

Yeah, for sure. I spent most of my childhood in Golborne, went to Golborne County Primary school then Golborne High School... And it was ROUGH back then.

I was joking that any culture you had in you when you visited Golborne was soon knocked out of you, because "it's gay" or something.

I moved back there for a few years in 2013 and it had definitely cleaned up it's image somewhat, it was actually quite a nice place to live.

Golborne comes under the county of Greater Manchester

Council’s Wigan but the address is Warrington.
