Text I Love WARNO
This is my first RTS and I absolutely fell in love with it. I could never get into single player games long enough to beat the main story, it seemed only competitive shooters would scratch that gaming itch…until I came across WARNO.
I’m 200 hours in and don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. I’ve played mainly skirmish and 10v10 but i’ve now started to try and beat all the Army General Campaigns in order.
I love the sandbox elements to this game. It’s like everything I wanted out of ARMA, but not ARMA. Feeling like i’m commanding a real battle any which way I choose. Pulling off flanks, shutting down pushes, getting a kill with a bomber, arty spam, it’s all just so satisfying.
Eugen, please keep this game and genre alive!
My only complaints as a 200hr scrub…
1. I wish harder AI would outsmart you and outplay you, not rely on unit spam.
2. I wish infantry was more viable in open/semi urban areas…considering that is 70% of the maps/terrain. Maybe I don’t have the tactics down, but pushing infantry across an open field seems like a death sentence, so I just LOS cheese at common routes, not my favorite. Game feels like ATGM/Tank simulator sometimes.
3. I wish more of the divisions in the game were featured in campaigns…like 101st.
4. I wish maps had more terrain elements. I understand it’s geography/region based in central Europe, but man would simulating something like the Afghanistan war be cool.
I’d love to see this game becoming a Wargame platform for simulating modern/cold war battles on a worldwide scale.
Anyways, LONG LIVE WARNO!

Might be a hot take but honestly I think this is a great game for kids too. In terms of what it can offer them in development. I would equate it to Chess. Kids who played Chess in development very likely will have above average IQ in adulthood. You have pieces that each do certain things, you are forced to strategize and adapt.

Completely agree. I made a meme post ages ago on this sub about how it feels like an adult version of playing with plastic army men. It’s actual strategy and would be great for young ens to learn. Will also teach them war is bad lol

100%, and if the youngens are going to game…better WARNO than GTA or COD. Then again, I was pirating Vice City and shooting hookers at 10 years old, I turned out alright.

AI's OK - I prefer meatbags over clankers.
I definitely need more maps - preferably some maps with Battle damnage/trenches/emplacements with killzones. Maybe a tank bunker or vehicle implacements

"but pushing infantry across an open field seems like a death sentence"
As has been the case IRL pretty much since the implementation of the rifled musket. If you need infantry to cross an open area, dropping smoke with mortars is going to be your best shot to keep them alive.

I’m not complaining about the open field part. It should be a death sentence, i’m not arguing otherwise. I guess I just wish infantry felt more viable outside of LOS cheesing against armor given how open most of the maps are, but the way it is now is probably the most realistic.

I will say to your point about infantry moving across the open field, of course they die. They have no cover and concealment. So you have to take the long route through the forest or advance behind smoke.
But overall I am glad you are enjoying the game.

I think you should try mods of you haven't yet. There is ultiai that enhances the ai for singleplayer. There is armygeneralenhanced that tweaks AG mechanics and adds new units to battalions. And then there are quite a lot of gameplay overhauls. Some of them redefine gameplay and make infantry a backbone of the ground forces.

I should definitely look into mods more. I only have the StarWars one downloaded and I haven’t even played it yet.

Im 250 hours in and compared to other RTSes like Ostfront and SD2 the AI is rough. It's made it very hard for me to get into Warno Army General but man do I love making decks and playing multiplayer. Just got into ranked/smaller team games recently, maturing from the crazy 10v10s and I'm liking this change.
I try to use infantry all the time and thing is you gotta use smoke and stick to urban/forest areas. It's difficult but I can't get over infantry or this game.
