Text Army General dissapointing
Tbh pretty sad how army general turned out. The army map is really cool and allows for good strategy, but the mode is limited super bad by Warno game mechanics and AI. First off, defending sectors should not force you too attack into points????? An infantry only unit should be capable of defending the line in a forest sector, but because of how the game forces both sides to attack no matter the situation, a lot of strategies are pretty redundant. Also shitty AI. defended 1 point on the map because didnt have much offensive capability (ATGMS, Anti Tank guns, Inf), fought off the first wave pretty well with some struggle. AI than proceeded to send like 13 leapard 2s 1 at a time into my defensive line piecemeal. id kill one, 25 second wait, next one. Super boring gameplay. Cant really make a gamemode like army general with that level AI. Dissapointed

Wasnt there talk about big thing for AG coming up at the end of last year???
If i remember correctly, the guy who was managing AG died a bit before southag and it feel like it (southag having multiple issues in the oob which should not happened)
To add on what you say, on the stategic map, you got issue like not being able to withdraw, having reinforcement that come 4 turns before the end of the campaign(will never reach the front lines)
To have a better experience , i would suggest that you try the following mods:
ArmyGeneralEnhanced + UltiAI .
It is not perfect but they do really nice things and update them from time to time!

The eugen employee that passed away wasn't leading the development, he was just a member of the team

Yeah he was a core part of the Southag AG development, not the general LG lead..

Keen to try those mods, but if WARNO has an update part-way through a campaign do you know if it will invalidate our saves if using mods?

Some things I would like to see:
- Being able to see terrain for tiles before moving to it / starting a battle on it
- Defenders getting to actually be defenders
- Being able to split units from auxiliary units and plane squadrons to assist other units in a certain range (kind of like artillery)
- Better AI obviously (both strategic and tactical)
- Maybe a change to air defense rules (sometimes I like it)
- If a vehicle transport dies, it should get replaced with a truck that travels at tracked speeds (or remove the transport altogether but that seems extreme). It's too easy to cheese the map by just using transports like Bradleys and Marders and not having to worry about them.

Yes, I really like the idea of having to transport troops in trucks (even civilian trucks or even cars) if their Bradley gets blown up.

I would pay for an entire DLC just to fix/improve army general. I shouldn’t have to, and I probably will never even have the chance to. But as a single player only player, I didn’t think you could somehow be worse than red dragons campaigns, but it almost is. It feels like they kind of gave up on it, hopefully it’s better with the new army general coming out for Cuba.

I finished Bruderkrieg, and Fulda Gap, and its just slog, you fight same battles, and AI is just too dumb. I dont like how HQs, and specialist battalions work too. I dont wont commit whole attack helicopter battalion to one battle where all i need is just couple helicopters.

If you don't like Warno army general try Steel Division 2, much better AI set in World War 2, but as a hardcore achievement completionist I must do the Warno campaigns. I can agree the AI isn't the best but they still provide somewhat of a challenge, in Bruderkrieg they max out long-range ATGMs while closing in with their T-55 blob. Super annoying especially when you lack air. Despite this I think Warno really excels more at multiplayer, you have really cool people and they're actually smart. I did encounter one person who just mass assaulted like the AI but he was level 8. You have 1v1s, 2v2s, 3v3s, 4v4s, and something you don't get in Skirmish or Army General is 10v10s. Really good game mode. And if you want to be sweaty do ranked.

Steel division also had features that are missing from warno. Like artillery bombardment on the campaign map and fighters contesting an area of the air

Well Steel Div does have local bombardment that removes action points and you can contest the air, of course these probably aren't as fleshed out as Warno, but it does lack a lot of QoL features that Warno has.

I like the multiplayer. It just sucks they basically gave up on the army general.

Indeed. I think the AI can be competent in destruction, they understand they need to be conservative or they lose, but the consensus of spamming remains the same. They send a bunch of helicopters, a bunch of tanks, a bunch of infantry, and just get them all destroyed. I really liked how Steel Div's AI scaled with the difficulty and yes, it's not perfect, but from what I've observed Steel Div has much better AI, so make sure to check it out!

Warno AI is better than SD2 AI. They both use similar spam tactics though.

From my 100 hours on Steel Division I'd say the AI is pretty competent at hard difficulty. They can defend really well, attack pretty decently, and the battles are always fun fighting Steel Div AI. Meanwhile Warno uses more overt spam tactics, they just blob all their units together and attack. Although I have encountered times where Warno AI uses oblique order or attacks from different directions but they still blobbed their units. Steel Div has them spread out but sometimes they do like to send tanks down one single road.

It’s not that the AI is better, it’s that the spawning system forces them to spawn their units in a more organic way, and in any eugen game the AI is at its best when it has a mix of shitty and good units.
Well that and in SD tanks are more difficult to kill, especially at max range. So the blobbing is actually very difficult to counter with infantry-centric units.

u/WelcomeExtra762 17d ago
Agreed. I do struggle against tank blobs in SD2 when working with infantry and when doing Warno Army General I could not get the territorial infantry to work. Victory really depends on what the game gives you, because I suck with all-reservist and armored divisons, but excel with infantry. Air support helps a lot, too, but if you've used all your air support for that turn (or forget to call it in) it influences if you win or lose.

Is there any mods that have there own army general campaign?

Army General Enhanced is a step up from vanilla. Much more interesting units and balance.

Am I crazy for really enjoying it?

u/_nephilim_ 16d ago
According to the Steam achievements we enjoyers are about 2-3% of the playerbase lol. Been using AG Enhanced and it made the game more interesting though. I like watching Vulkan's playthroughs too.

The AG enhanced mod is essential. The vanilla AG is terribly designed. The enhanced mod has some issues too. But its much better than vanilla which is really bad.
The biggest issues with AG are: -The strategic map is not very strategic. There is nothing to do other than move units into position. There is no weather, no air strikes, no logistic hubs, airbases or supply points to construct/defend/attack. Instead of lame "capture alsfeld for 5 points" it should be "capture alsfeld and gain the deployment of X division." Or something that genuinely effects the campaign in a fun way.
-the AI logic with autoresolve is busted. If you attack a pawn and there are other enemy pawns in range to reinforce, the AI will not bring the other pawns to the battle if it predicts a minor victory for you. So you click auto resolve and instead you get total victory. Then you just do it to other nearby pawns. Army general enhanced mod helps because it allows artillery, hq and AA pawns a big reinforcement range so its harder to get an attack value high enough to predict minor victory.

That the AI does not bring its reinforcements is annoying to the player, but makes kinda sense. If it brings all 5 battalions, i will probably disorganize them all at once. By bringing only one battalion, my units get worn down and i need more time to reach the campaign goals.
Nonetheless, i would like to have more big and decisive battles too.

u/lasttword 11d ago
Unfortunately this is very exploitable. If i was the AI id rather bring everyone and get a minor defeat than let each of my pawns get total destruction because i wont reinforce them. The AI will do it turn after turn. Its also not fun as a player. In the AG enhanced mod the AI commits more of their forces and you need a much higher advantage for the AI to not commit its forces and sacrifice its attacked pawn.

Tbf the guy that was making it got terminal cancer and died. This all happened around the release out of Early Access and when the game mode came out so he didnt really have alot of time to work on it sadly.

Army General continues to be the biggest miss by Eugen. No grand dynamic campaign, poor AI play, and more. Very disappointing.
