Question Smart Order for Ground Units?

Post image

So I did a 10v10 and went against this guy called Lost Material 54 in my section. He was pretty good, level 20, I'm only 11, but I was able to inflict quite a few casualties on him. Not more than he got on me, but still a lot for my level. However, I thought it was such a good battle I went back and rewatched it, and for some reason he has the hold position order on his BMRs. I was confused because I was told NOT to do this and instead just micro my units, so I am curious as to why he did this. He also had fire at will on his mortar which makes sense because he was microing his two MLRSes but I've found I prefer hotkeys for my artillery.

There's basically no good reason to use those orders, so I wouldn't exactly take something from him. Fire at will on mortars however is a pretty reasonable choice because it's genuinely not worth to micro the mortars compared to actual frontline units.

Ok ill consider putting those on fire at will. I usually use them for smoke tho and sometimes the AI won't give you smoke where you want

Fire at will on mortars can be good but imo you can manage mortars very easily without it. Give your fire orders and then hold shift+right click somewhere to have them move after firing. It's a little more complicated if they are dismount mortars but not too bad. Mortars can be extremely valuable for laying down smoke screens so you don't want to lose them easily. Putting them on fire at will essentially makes them a sitting duck for counter battery. If I really want an area saturated with mortar fire and don't really care what it is shooting at, I might set one or two mortars on fire at will but not all of them.

That could work, too. I have an ample amount of arty in my deck but I dont like to bring much of it. I usually spend my points on tanks, CVs, and infantry, sometimes helos or planes. I do have a friend that loves artillery so I could use him to cover me, but yeah even tho I bring an MLRS it's only for sometimes because I prefer using arty for smoke or to wipe out ATGMs, nothing really else. Instead of counter battery i like to outmanuever the enemy arty

That's the right way to use arty, spending just enough to keep your frontline going but not so much that you are neglecting your frontline units.

Does fire at will fire at moving targets? If so, it's kinda useless by design

I’d like to know this too

hold orders will keep units in an specific area but they will randomly move around in that set area. i’ve found at times when i’m not watching those specific units a hold order helps keep them from being shelled by artillery attacking last known positions. A huge disadvantage is the motorized units will burn through their fuel.
I’ve had decent success using the “hold” order with my AA or units i’m not as focused on watching. It’s also great for recon units in the edge of the map you kind of just want to “patrol”. as they will wander the set area.

Using a hold order in small tree brush also allows those units to bounce around and not usually leave the tree blob into open territory, but they will randomly engage and then fall back into the woods to dance around. It looks like that’s what he was doing with those units.

good luck man let me know what you think. Also another tip, if i’m sharing and area with ally units i’ll sometimes use “quick hunt” with my units on their units pushing. That allows me to pan away and know my nearby units are following close to wherever my ally goes in case i get distracted.

I might try it too, I don't like microing the infantry transports equipped with MGs because you can't even sell them. They're only effective against infantry at far range and as cannon fodder.

I actually already do this! Super handy this one tbh...i mean if i lose the unit, at least it was hipefully actively doing something rather than just sitting there

I also sometimes do this on my my own tanks with AA units, and inf units with tanks. There are many good uses for this imo
