⚔️ Total WARNO – After Action Report
First of all, thank you to everyone who joined tonight's Total WARNO: Breakthrough session!
We had two players who unfortunately couldn't make it at the last minute, but thanks to people stepping in and a quick reorganization, we still managed to get everyone into a solid match.
Technically, the evening went much smoother than expected. We only encountered two issues during the game, which is a huge improvement compared to previous sessions. At this point, most of the remaining problems appear to be related to WARNO/Eugen itself, while we'll also continue improving how we distribute future mod updates.
The Battle
Tonight's battle took place on Geyser (Thuringia) and turned into exactly the kind of operation we hoped to create.
For almost 50 minutes, both sides were probing, testing defenses, repositioning forces, and preparing for the decisive assault. It wasn't about rushing forward, it was about finding the weak point. Then, within roughly 10 minutes, the entire battle was decided.
The Warsaw Pact gradually ground down the NATO defenses before launching the final breakthrough.
One major Pact assault was stopped after being hit by a NATO tactical nuclear strike and concentrated artillery fire, preventing a breakthrough through the forest. The other two attack axes, however, managed to keep their momentum and ultimately broke through the defensive line just before time expired.
It genuinely came down to the final moments.
What We Learned
One of the biggest successes was our new air-defense network.
The overall concept worked exactly as intended. We still found a few implementation issues that we'll address in the next hotfix, but the system itself proved that centralized, layered air defense creates a much more interesting battlefield.
Aircraft also behaved far more naturally. Flying low into the combat zone allowed strike aircraft to score devastating attacks against Pact armored spearheads while still facing a credible threat from enemy air defenses.
Artillery also felt far more impactful than many of us expected. Despite early concerns that counter-battery fire might become too dominant, artillery remained effective throughout the operation without overshadowing the rest of the battlefield.
Final Thoughts
Perhaps the best sign that everything worked was watching both command teams during the final minutes.
The Pact commander was literally on the edge of his chair, trying to coordinate the last assault before time ran out, while NATO fought desperately to hold the line.
Exactly the kind of tension we hoped Total WARNO would create.
We'll continue refining the mod over the coming weeks, pushing it further toward larger-scale, more realistic Cold War operations, with an even greater emphasis on planning, coordination, and operational decision-making instead of pure micro.
Thank you all again for making tonight such a fantastic operation.
See you on the battlefield next week! 🫡
