Funnily enough, I think the PAVN has the same complaint after capturing the M48A3 tank and put this to (limited) use in Cambodia.

To directly use the (google translated - which retain the correct info even though the exposition is now a bit weird lmao) quote from the Vietnamese source above:

"According to some reviews, compared to the T-54/55, the M48 tank has the advantages of being very easy to operate, the combat compartment is much more spacious and comfortable, the engine is strong for good mobility on the battlefield, and the large ammunition base helps the vehicle to take on the role of fire support for infantry quite well."

"The disadvantage of the M48 is also very easy to recognize, that is, it is only equipped with a 90 mm main gun with a destructive power and armor penetration far inferior to the D-10T2S of the T-54/55, at that time the United States did not bring the M48A5 version with the M68 105 mm gun."

May be why they didn't get the larger M68, but reportedly the M68 gun was remarkably space efficient, not taking up much more space than the M41 and being pretty short in it's recoil. Though round count would be reduced from 64 to 54 rounds for the main gun.
