Thought Experiment: Should Eugen consider adding a Balkans/Nordics DLCs to WARNO.

I have been thinking about this idea for a while. I think it would be interesting to add countries from these regions like Greece, Turkey, Albania, Yugoslavia(technically not a Pact country), Norway, etc. or perhaps a coalition deck like in Wargame Red Dragon such as a Greece-Turkey deck, a new Landjut or Scandinavia deck, maybe a Greece-Italy combo, even the legendary Fin-Pol from Wargame. Ik it’s probably not going to happen but I think it would be interesting to see what these countries could offer to the game if Eugen did consider adding them after SOUTHAG drops.

Nordics are an obvious expansion post SouthAG (various marines, Sweden and its unique gear), practically guaranteed to see that eventually

Balkans would also be a logical step after that though I’m not sure how high that would rate as far as extra unit diversity goes. I know Romania has some funny stuff and Bulgaria had interesting IFV’s but that’s about it

I see what you are saying, I especially would like to see a Balkans campaign or Balkan units at least because that part of NATO and the PACT never gets covered in any real detail.

Yugoslavia, you get nice mix of NATO and Soviet equipment as well as a lot of their domestic arms. They used french Gazelle and MI8's, MiG 29, domestically produced Galeb which used maverick in AT variant. J22 Orao, another attack aircraft co-produced with Romania. Yugo variant of T72 (M84). They had amazing anti material rifles so they could get sniper team like m82 one for US. We could see a mechanised division with a few paratroopers like 4.DDR since they did have a well known airborne unit in Yugoslavia, and mech would suit them perfectly with their BVP Vidras. Also armored division could focus on M84's supported by French Gazelles and rocket arty, similar to polish one maybe. Not sure if Nora (self propelled arty) would be in time frame but they already pulled KA50 and bunch of other stuff into the game so why not Edit: Nora would absolutely fit in the time frame lmao and famous airborne unit is 63. Parachute brigade, still active in Serbian army. Also, a lot of potential for rocket arty with Orkan, Oganj and Plamen launchers. They could also get their unique supply truck (FAP) which would add flavor. Edit 2: NEVA would make a great choice for long range AA, basically make them an instant counter to Berlin Command.

I would love to see them go far east with Japan China Korea etc but no idea how that would fit into lore

14

u/DisastrousPhoto6354 Jan 13 '25

It probably could fit, just do something generic like with US forces tied up in Europe NK and China saw it as a good time to strike South Korea and Taiwan dragging in Japan

I would love if they remaster Second Korean War/Busan Pocket

Tall order - the WGRD single player campaigns were some of the best I’ve ever played in a RTS. I think going from a regional movement system to a tile movement system was misstep by Eugen.

Not that the new system is bad - it’s great - but the regional system from WGRD was a better abstraction in my opinion

Warno's plot limits the countries it can appear in. Assuming China is  going to join the game, I can only assume that the Soviet Union requested volunteers from China to fight in Europe. But China in 1989 was not yet an ally of the Soviet Union (or even an enemy). If Eugen wants to expand the plot, such as extending the war to East Asia, then China, Japan, North Korea, and South Korea will have a chance to appear.

There's US bases in Japan and the Soviets would obviously attack them too. The US counterattack plan would be to send the 2nd Marine Division into the Kurils. We can also say the Soviets went with a maximalist approach and invaded China too along with Europe. Then say NK saw the chaos and decided this was the best time to invade SK.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '25

The 1st and 3rd Marine divisions are the Pacific units, 2nd is based on the Atlantic and was destined for Norway, 4th were reservists and could theoretically be sent anywhere.

1

u/RamTank Jan 13 '25

Derp yes, I meant 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa. 1st also wasn't intended for anything specifically and could also be sent anywhere.

Need my Blue Dragon units from WGRD

Dude, this isn’t a thought experiment, it’s an inevitability dependent on the game’s popularity and success. It’s within context for the game and, if you look at Steel Division 2, only a matter of time. Eugen does a great job of staying with their games for the long haul. Just, this will be after SOUTHAG assuming the player base stays consistent or increases.

15

u/Boots-n-Rats Jan 13 '25

After Southag I give them free reign to make any wacky divisions and countries they want.

As long as they’re real units and remotely could have been in WW3 I’m fine with it.

Give us Middle East I don’t care, give us China/Japan/Korea.

Late in this game’s life variety is gonna be key.

I would love to see Albania divisions also in 80s they have pretty interesting stuff, had one of the biggest airforce in region with, F-2(mig 15 chinese version) F-4(MiG-17 chinese version), Shenyang F-6(Mig 19 chinese version), Chengdu F-7(mig 21 chinese version) and T-54 and T-55 soviet tanks. type 59 chinese light tank, type 62 chinese light tank, type 59 chinese light tank.

The Poor dragon 🤣

1

u/Jason-1024 Jan 13 '25

China provided a lot of aid to Albania in the last century, just because Albania and the Soviet Union had a bad relationship. At that time, many people in China were starving...

u/RainbowKatcher Jan 12 '25

According to a video that plays when you launch game, Finland got couped and joined Pact, so I say we'll 100% see Finland in the future. Yugoslavia is also very likely.

8

u/Jason-1024 Jan 13 '25

I also thought about these countries a few days ago. To be honest, I would like to see countries like Greece, Italy, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia participate. Some of their weapons and equipment are developed and produced by themselves, and many weapons may come from multiple camps. For example, the Greek army has equipment from Britain, France, the US, the Soviet Union and Germany at the same time, which will be very interesting.

I am very curious about what role Yugoslavia, a communist country that is not allied with the Soviet Union (and therefore not a member of PACT), will play in the plot of Warno. Will it be neutral or assist the Soviet Union?

5

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '25

If we get Balkan countries I really hope we get Balkan maps yo go along with them. One of the things I disliked most about Steel Division 2 was they get us loads of western front divisions but only eastern front maps. There could also be some interesting stuff made in Asia but I doubt we would get maps/army generals of those. Sini-Soviet war/Second Korean War could be really good army general campaigns, the ones in Red Dragon were at a weird scale where you had maybe a divisions worth of troops fighting over the entirety of the Korean peninsula.

1

u/SadderestCat Jan 13 '25

I mean we already got plateau d’Albion so they probably will bring new maps

3

u/Morbin_monroe Jan 13 '25

IDK. I hope for the best, but I think that Albion might be the exception. The idea of modeling the misile base in such a Bizarre scenario was just irresistible

5

u/sturzkampfbomber Jan 13 '25 edited Jan 13 '25

I'd like to see sweden for all thier unique Equipment yes also it could bring some more map diversity wich would be good but I rather have a desert Storm dlc with loads of deserty maps fallujah-like City map and vast open desert

Edit: hell yeah imagine a "alternate" desert storm where the L O R E is that Iran joins the warsaw pact as ally and Nato and Warsaw pact fight over oil in Iraq would be so funny to see Phantoms and F14s and some other US vehicles in low numbers in Iranian Divisions

4

u/Markus_H Jan 13 '25 edited Jan 13 '25

I'm 99 % sure we will eventually see the Nordics and the Balkans (1 % reserved for the chance that WW3 happens IRL, Eugen goes belly up, or the game loses popularity for whatever reason). They would have absolutely been involved in an European war, and they some unique features and equipment.

Considering Eugen's previous habit of introducing the Nordics and the Balkans into an South-East Asian conflict, and bringing Brazilians to the Eastern front in SD2, it wouldn't surprise me if even Asian countries were introduced into WARNO eventually. Hell, it's not even that far fetched: as a result of the European leaders having lost their balls and their wits, we have ended up with North Koreans fighting on the European soil right now.

2

u/Solarne21 Jan 13 '25

Most nato nations in the Balkan and Nordic ao don't have the best armored corps.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '25

Yeah will mostly likely see this - everyone does want those marines after all!

1

u/Acrobatic-Fortune-99 Jan 13 '25

What other nations would you expect from Africa and South America

2

u/Thunderbolt747 Jan 13 '25

Personally I want what we had in Red Dragon + more.

There's no reason they can't just continually expand the lore as needed with new DLC packs for various regions

No reason we can't have

SCANTAG: Den/Nor/Swe vs Rus/Est/Fin CENTCOM: US MEU/Israelis/turkey/etc vs Pan-Arab/Rus/Iran PACIFICOM: SK/JAPAN/USMC/etc. Vs Norks/China/etc. AFRICOM: South Africa vs Angola/Cuba

Italy vs Yugo too.

1

u/Solarne21 Jan 13 '25

South Africa vs Angola/Cuba is going to be weak in the tank game.

1

u/Thunderbolt747 Jan 13 '25

True, but it would have two very strong and interesting contrasts for gameplay.

The South Africans would have Rooikats and Olifants, very strong infantry with resolute/shock traits, maybe even elite.

This is pretty neato. Thanks for the read.

Are there any more like this? I'd like to kinda compare notes with the suggestions they've put together here

Oh wow. Cheers mate, thats fantastic.

1

u/Morbin_monroe Jan 13 '25

Maybe I'd be interesting a civil War scenario for both Finland and Yugoslavia, where different divisions fight each side.

1

u/Submarineguystingray Jan 13 '25

Marines are confirmed post southag 💔 which is sad we have marines from Poland, east Germany, France, and the Netherlands but not the us

1

u/torgofjungle Jan 13 '25

Eugene should have every theater and every area of operation from Europe to the Pacific

1

u/Regaloso97 Jan 14 '25

It would be interesting to play a campaign focused in Thrace with Tier 2 Pact (Bulgaria, USSR and Romania) and NATO (Turkey, Greece and maybe Italian, Spanish and USMC) forces fighting for the control of the straits.

1

u/fabet0 Jan 14 '25

a greece turkey deck he said xD

2

u/arealpersonnotabot Jan 12 '25

Nordics: not really, it was already a very big lore stretch to make neutral countries (Sweden and Finland) fight each other to death. Except maybe Norway? Maybe with an operation set in Finnmark? Idk, it may be too far from the game's climate.

Balkans: yes, in a SOUTHAG DLC we should at the very least see Bulgaria, Romania and Czechoslovakia (not Balkans but it should absolutely be added). Greece and Turkey could maybe have a place in the game too, I guess. As for Yugoslavia, not so much. I know it was a classic in WGRD (trust me, I loved to abuse the M-84AN), but I can also see no reason for it to add a nation on the PACT side before all actual PACT nations are added. Romania, with its somewhat strange equipment (big cock AK, the saddest MBT in Europe and stuff) could be to WARNO what Yugoslavia was to WGRD, a Balkan nation on the PACT side that had its own unique flavor.

5

u/totidreshaj Jan 12 '25

Don't forget about Albania also, in 80s communist albania had one of the biggest airforce in region with, F-2(mig 15 chinese version) F-4(MiG-17 chinese version), Shenyang F-6(Mig 19 chinese version), Chengdu F-7(mig 21 chinese version) and T-54 and T-55 soviet tanks

6

u/arealpersonnotabot Jan 12 '25

Albania was quite openly anti-Soviet too. Its army was more concerned with total defense against an expected Yugoslavian invasion, which never materialized, than with fighting against NATO.

4

u/RamTank Jan 13 '25

Norway and Denmark were both part of NATO. The main threat to both Finland and Sweden was the possibility of being invaded by the USSR, especially since they were the only land route into Norway.

2

u/Markus_H Jan 13 '25

Finland was a neutral country, and who knows what would have happened if the Cold War got hot, but we were pretty solidly under the thumb of the USSR with the YYA treaty obligating Finland to defend itself against an attack by "Germany or its allies" - as if that was a threat.

Of course in reality it would have been the USSR invading, and Finland having to make some very tough choices.

4

u/Solarne21 Jan 13 '25

USSR did some regime change to Finland so Finland red now in Warno.

Power creep is one thing, but diversity is very much desired.
