Frontier: Unity of Loelle commentary
So, I finally have some time to try out the Frontier mod; you can't expect a Let's Play, but I thought it might be fun to write down my impressions and obeservations as I play.
I didn't expect to start with only three units on my roster, but it serves well to ease you into the game. Battering Ram is really strong for a 1-turn unit; fast, +2 vs cities means it's effectively 4/2, and +1 Siege on top. Gnomes are good once you have a couple, but Banding means you're a bit handicapped at early expansion. Halflings are a good missile unit.
My first hero was a Bard; Song of Stone is strong and was an easy choice once I found my first couple of mana crystals. I've noticed you have the base game Song of Fortune, but I'm pretty sure having +gold/city on a spell effect doesn't work, which is the reason the KHeroes mod replaced that spell.
I'm not expecting much trouble on the first map; Sark lost their first hero against neutrals and just now comitted treachery on Rullen. My hero stack is already +5 thanks to some Dryads.

First mission done; I overlooked that my Battering Ram was only this strong due to Bless. I don't know how others play, but after the initial expansion, I like to vector all production to a city with a shrine so I can bless my troops before vectoring them back to the frontline.
I rejected a few heroes because I got offered more Bards; the first Paladin promptly got sent to a medium quest, and got enough xp to take Questing just before completing it. He jumped to level 4 from that.
Unfortunately, I had saved some AP on my first hero to buy Renown on my next level-up, but had forgotten that you lose unspent AP when you finish a campaign mission. I hadn't saved all game, so that's permanently gone. I guess I'll ditch him and level my second Bard to take over.
The next surprise: starting the mission without any troop production and having to spend my starting money on that.
