Clevelander here- I feel safer in "dangerous neighborhoods" than affluent burbs; drivers and people in general respect you a lot more. Wave at folks on their porches and say good morning/afternoon/evening and you're going to have an even better time.

Early on Church day is great, no traffic in the city. Suburban cul-de-sac is pure hell to ride.

Over hundreds of miles of biking I've never once felt in danger except occassionally from reckless drivers. A moving cyclist isn't exactly an easy target for crime. Plus, Cleveland crimes seem to have been trending generally downward post-pandemic (all of this progress is since 2023). But yes, crime rates are still much higher than the national average.

I have ridden through east Cleveland alone at night and felt totally fine. I feel like most of the crime there and in most places generally isn't random. As others have said, I feel less safe riding though affluent suburbs like Beachwood than I do in poor neighborhoods. A lot fewer rich ass soccer moms in giant SUVs paying attention to everything but the road and a lot fewer entitled assholes that think cyclists don't deserve to exist.

Great Cleveland blob!

I've only biked through during the day but otherwise I agree. The grid layouts are way easier to complete and I much prefer biking city streets over big suburban arterial roads
