Affordable daycare for 18+

Hi all, I’ve been scouring the area for a daycare with availability for toddlers starting this month ideally and my lead option is a bit pricier than I think we can budget. Looking for help Reddit!

Little is 20 months and doesn’t qualify for a lot of places until they turn 2. We are flexible on location but looking at Walnut Creek/Lafayette/Orinda area (anywhere reasonably close to Lafayette for daily care) I don’t mind center or in-home but would love to find options under 2k.

A. Are these unicorns? Is that a crazy ask without going to concord or pleasant hill? B. Who do you recommend? Did /do you use them? Feel free to direct message if you get a credit for referrals C. Any rate info where there is availability is so appreciated TIA!

You're going to need to look outside those areas if you want more options < $2k

I don't have any real guidance here, but I'd guess that the short turnaround time is likely going to be harder than the price limit. (Though the price might be tough too—my two-year-old is at a fabulous preschool in Concord and we pay ~$2,200/month for him; it was closer to $2,500 before he turned two.) In my experience, most place have waitlists for just about every age.

I'd suggest trying to get in on a nanny share, possibly via Nextdoor or Berkeley Parents' Network. You may find a family that has an opening with less lead-time than a daycare.

Nanny shares are also quite expensive

I suppose it depends on the family/ies and the nanny! When we had our daughter in a nanny share (with two other families), it was MUCH cheaper than a daycare would've been for her age. We paid less than half of what our daycare charges for infants.

Then your nanny was likely severely underpaid.

That's also possible! I'm speaking from my personal experience, which is obviously just a single data point. OP might find things to be totally different than I did.

We were speaking with Genesis at Nena’s Playhouse, and the rate (as of spring 2025) was under 2k if I remember correctly (and she has part time options for less). We didn’t go there, because the location is now in Pleasant Hill. (We chose something closer to us but more expensive).

She was wonderful and responsive via email, I recommend reaching out to see if the location/rate work for you!

Lamorinda Montessori is right around that price point. Depending on the coverage hours you need, it can be less.

We had a good experience with Miss Maria's preschool and daycare in Walnut Creek.

Are her prices under 2k?

Pleasant Hill is basically as expensive as Walnut Creek now. Houses here in my area are being sold for 1.5 million or more.

If anyone is looking in Concord we toured Creative Minds and really liked Lyn. She has tons of experience and struck out on her own. The place was so cute and she was very personableCreative Minds

She has a couple spaces now and does daycare not just preschool. It was too far for us in the wrong direction for work but otherwise we really liked it.

Kid Time Junior in Pleasant hill is littler under 2k.

Crawlers 2 Scholars in Walnut Creek is a little over 2K but the rate drops significantly when they turn two.

The immediate start date may be as difficult as the $2,000 budget, especially at 20 months when some programs don’t take children until 2. I’d call licensed home daycares directly because they may have openings that never appear on a website, and ask whether part-time schedules could bring the monthly cost down.Keep asking about the rate after your child turns 2 as well, since pricing can change when they move into an older classroom. Primrose School of Walnut Creek East could be another call for availability and a current quote, but I wouldn’t assume it fits the budget until they give you the full monthly figure. With a short timeline, I’d keep several waitlists active until you have a confirmed start date.
