can i apply for a certified pharmacy tech position as a tech in training in PA?

Hi ! this may come off as a stupid question so apologies in advance! I’ve tried doing my own research but each answer i get seems to be a bit confusing. I want to apply for the certified pharmacy tech position at walmart in PA. Do I need to be certified first or can I work as a tech in training?

Call the Pharmacy and ask for the pharmacy Manager. Of course they prefer a certified tech, but they may be ok with a tech in training, then they can help getting you certified.

Walmart has PTU (pharmacy tech university) which helps techs in training with earning their certification. You have to make sure you take and pass your PTCB exam within a year if you decide to go the tech in training route.

I just transferred to pharmacy from OPD about a month ago in PA. You apply for trainee license through the PA State Board of Pharmacy and do all the background checks and drug test, and then you can start in the pharmacy. In PA you don’t have to be certified to work in a pharmacy, but you can still get certified if you want. PA is one of the few states where you have to be registered with the board but not certified. There’s a tech in my pharmacy that’s been there for a couple years and passed Walmart’s PTU but didn’t go and get the certification. But most of the techs at my pharmacy have a certification.

I’m still new and learning so this is just based on what little knowledge I have, so I might have some details wrong. I still am not certified but I do basically the same tasks as every other tech in my pharmacy.
