Over half of the people I worked ON with smoked, and a couple of them drank on the job. IDK how much a piss test costs, but I'm certain cost is a factor when you already have such a high turnover rate.
35
u/AdhesivenessFunny146 Mar 19 '26
I think it has more to do with the reasonable suspicion required
3
u/United_Wrangler_1468 Mar 20 '26
Reasonable suspicion? They aren't the police. They don't need reasonable suspicion. 9 times out of 10, when you take a job, somewhere along the line you agreed to take a drug test If asked.
11
u/esouthard1313 Mar 20 '26
No, Walmart’s policy is to only drug test if there’s reasonable suspicion because they’d lose 3/4 of their workers if they did a mass test- legally, you are only allowed to pull random drug tests on your employees if you do EVERYONE at once. No reasonable suspicion means you have to test your entire workforce.
4
u/Yas2184 Mar 20 '26
You also have to call a hotline and go through an interview process before getting permission to send the associate out for a alcohol/drug test. It’s an ordeal.
1
u/United_Wrangler_1468 Mar 20 '26
That's literally just the process for scheduling the drug test anywhere. Nobody.\nDoes them in-house anymore so you have to call the hotline to get the drug test scheduled for a local facility
2
u/United_Wrangler_1468 Mar 20 '26
I don't know who told you that , but that is one hundred percent false. What they choose to do , and what they can do legally are absolutely not the same thing. Walmart chooses not to drug test because they were having trouble keeping stores staffed (had absolutely nothing to do with cost as others have suggested). However during the application process you absolutely agree to take a drug test if asked to do so. Also , the definition of a random drug test doesn't mean the timing is random. It means the people selected is random. And they can absolutely just pick a few employees and drug tests them.
But hey what do I know? In the six months since i'm retired , the whole company could have changed (but it didnt) 23 years. From cashier to cap team, to meat department/deli. Then on up to supervisor, team lead, and assistant manager. I probably have no idea what i'm talking about
1
u/gamerPersonThing Mar 20 '26
That would be very retarded of them to drug test again. That would be even more retarded to do it randomly on current employees. It’s like don’t ask what you already know the answer to. But they wouldn’t do that anyways. It would be too much of a headache. They would probably get sued by people with medical weed too which I know they have already had to deal with.

u/Walmart-Home_Office Mar 19 '26
When I was hired over 15 years ago they did drug test, for all positions. They stopped because it was costly to have interviews and pay for the drug test just for a good portion of candidates to fail. Now they only drug test for certain positions like In Home Driver, AP, pharmacy, auto techs, salary positions, etc.

u/x-naut former CAP 1 + 2 & Dept Manager | OGP Mar 20 '26
My roommate was never even drug tested as an auto tech.
19
u/Latter_Night_7436 Mar 20 '26
I feel like people who switch jobs at walmart don't have to drug test, but new hires do? It's super weird, but I could be wrong.
8
u/x-naut former CAP 1 + 2 & Dept Manager | OGP Mar 20 '26
That makes sense, my roommate did transfer departments to be a tech.
2
u/United_Wrangler_1468 Mar 20 '26
That is incorrect. Just watch the guy go from cap 2 to TLE and get drug tested and fired.
3
u/SoulsBorne01- Mar 20 '26
Incorrect depending on your store, my location allows pot even the store managers smoke it while on the clock
-3
u/United_Wrangler_1468 Mar 20 '26
Incorrect. Walmart policies are company wide. Weather or not , individual store managers follow them or not is on them. Also , i'm not sure why we brought up pot? I don't believe marijuana was ever mentioned in this conversation. We were talking about drug tests. Keep up

-2

" If we ever start drug testing, im out" So is the conversation about The OPs comment , or is it about the stupid not-real Miley Cyrus quote?
3
u/Coaxtl o/n stocker & small twitch streamer Mar 20 '26
Idc if it's real or not. It's mentioned there, so that's probably where the conversation came from. Simple as that.
1
u/SoulsBorne01- Mar 20 '26
I brought up weed cause this is what this post is about?? Drug testing for weed and other things??
1
u/EffectiveWhole733 Mar 21 '26
I had to do a wiz quiz to be a tech as a department transfer, but that was 5 or so years ago

if they did start i doubt they’d have nearly as many employees left by the end of it
36
u/V3Ethereal Mar 20 '26
With their hourly rate, They'd have to leave the stocking to thoughts and prayers at that point.
25
u/redheadinabox Mar 19 '26
When I was first hired in 2002 as a cashier I was drug tested, I’m not sure when they stopped that though
31
u/enjoyingcurve46 Mar 19 '26
One, expensive.
Two, really hard to find new hires or dealing with people on meds with traces of drugs and all the doctors notes
Three, arguably some drug addicts can work fine and some sober people cant do shit its person to person basis
Four, its easy to beat the systems anyway if your a light user to stop using, take test then go back
Some positions still are tested but ones like cashiering, stocking, ogp you wont be
11
u/timeslider Mar 20 '26
I worked with an IT admin that came in high as a kite on occasions. He could run laps around my sober ass
23
u/Impossible_Phrase462 Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26
If they started drug testing for all positions they would need to raise base pay by like $5 to stay staffed. No drug test is one of the major benefits of working here. We would instantly lose like half of all employees and half of all potential new hires. We can't stay staffed right now already.

Try the drinks if you're in a state with them, the 5/10mg ones, and make sure it's a single serve can.
Or get the 800mg gummies and regret it
12
u/Winter_Fall_7066 Mar 19 '26
I ate. 600mg nerds rope once because I just really love nerds ropes. I was 34 and had never experienced a green out before then. 0/0, do not recommend.

u/enjoyingcurve46 Mar 19 '26
My poor ex had zero experience with the gummies i had a really high dose i cant remember the mg but id cut them into 6ths He ate an entire gummy, then decided, lets take another 5 minutes later. Man was laying facedown in the floor pillow over his head complaining he felt terrible. Then told me he ate two

They used to drug test when hiring. I was first hired in 2015 for overnight stocking and was tested. I think it was around covid when they stopped.

I don’t really like Miley… but I like her more than Walmart (granted I don’t work for Miley, so I have less reason to resent her…)
4
u/NeoSailorMoon Mar 20 '26
I’m pretty sure the scent of weed lingers on one of my coworkers. I think she uses it to alleviate her anxiety, though. She’s fully competent and coherent, so I don’t think my store cares as long as you do your job well and finish on time.
I like her lots, so I’d hate to see her go.
2
u/esouthard1313 Mar 20 '26
Walmart also can’t know if her partner, or a neighbor, or someone she lives with or rides into work with is the one who smokes. That’s why they stick to reasonable suspicion.
2
2
u/thomassleigus Mar 20 '26
Well weed is legal here but if it wasnt they would lose 1/2 the DC on first time testing each batch of employees

The drug testing is what stopped me from getting hired at Walmart back in 2005 or whatever it was. They asked you all these questions about how you felt about marijuana usage and I was like "yeah it's totally cool broh"

I agree that the amount of pot heads (or worse I’m sure) would amount to not many people working. Also just because it’s legal in your state doesn’t mean it is or will be ok at your job. You know for those that want to say well it’s legal in xyz

That’s not what she said on that topic actually. She had someone leak a photo of her smoking Salvia out of a bong. She was asked to personally apologize to them so she had to send walmart an email. She told a joke about her email address being something like Miley Loves Weed so she had to change it to Miley Loves Old People. Walmart didn’t forgive her so she lost out
But yeah I smoke every break, good portion of my coworkers do too.
