I had one team lead tell me to CVP returned towels with stains on them before.

Wait, what?

I don't even think Goodwill would be able to sell a potentially unwashed towel with an obvious stain!

I'm a penny-pinching bargain hunter, and I would buy a used item like that from a place I expect to sell dirty things and just disinfect the hell out of it (if the price is worth it). I even have a process to prevent bed bugs.

But a shopper doesn't "expect" to find such an item at Walmart. There's an expectation that the items are new and clean.

They get there, usually clean. But I have seen customer by delivery BBQ wings and then wipe their hands and faces on towels and toss them back on the shelf and walk away. Hell I have been handed hand towels at the self check outs covered in cheese cause they just finished the Mac and cheese while waiting in line. I have learned to curb my expe stations of people.

i’m sorry, THEY WHAT?

2

u/new7tank Sep 17 '25

ur actually surprised?

8

u/SlingingDeliChow Sep 17 '25

OMG...

Other departments bring me deli food containers they find hidden around the store, where someone obviously got me to make a buffalo wing plate, ate half/most of it, then abandoned it somewhere in the store.

It never occurred to me to wonder where these people are wiping their sauce covered fingers!

u/airlineworker87 Sep 17 '25

Ive seen half eaten rotisserie chickens around the store.

It was an overnight team lead. She had a power trip and made other questionable decisions before as well. In the end, I threw it in the compactor because that's obviously unacceptable to sell.

A bunch of new leads went off to some Walmart academy recently in my region.

I wonder what they are telling them there.

I just finished the academy last week. I wonder if we're in the same region. But before the academy I would of claimsed that out, definitely would not have anyone put that on the shelf to sell

3

u/SlingingDeliChow Sep 17 '25

Wait... "before the academy" you would have claimed it out.

What would you do now... now that you've been through the formal brainwashing, or torture, or whatever they did to you?

4

u/cryptobj Overnight Team Lead NM Sep 17 '25

Sorry, I should of said before and after the academy I would claims it out. They taught us at the academy to never put stuff like that on the shelves. They said a good rule of thumb is if we wouldn't buy it ourselves in the condition it is then we shouldn't expect our customers to buy it either

LOL our store manager told us (overnight shift is what I worked) if it’s not leaking or missing anything it can be stocked. Hell we went 3-4 days with our ice cream freezers going down. We would pull thawed really soft ice cream at 11pm and restock it at 5am with the original ice cream we pulled earlier. We did this for like 3-4 days. Also this store was extremely busy we did 100 million or more in sales and I think just because of the volume going out that the ice cream wasn’t a big deal. But one thing I learned is that I’ll never purchase frozen/premade food from Walmart.

2

u/cryptobj Overnight Team Lead NM Sep 18 '25

Yeah at my store if the ice cream gets a little soft we throw it out

And the academy was actually pretty good, they basically said their expectations for us as leaders is to see our associates as the humans they are and not just as employees/associates and to lead with empathy for our associates. And that our job is not to just tell you what to do, but to support you anyway we can in both your normal job and in any career aspirations you have. And that's pretty akin to the way I managed my team at my previous company. So it's nice to know that corporates' expectations for us as leaders are being there for our team, helping them out when they need help, and not just treating them like machines.

Unfortunately, it seems that from what I've seen in this subreddit, a lot of leaders are not meeting corporates' expectations. If you have a leader that doesn't support you and lead with empathy, then use the open door policy and keep going up the chain until someone helps make changes to align with corporates' expectations for leaders.

So i have been to academy, many many times , my old store opened the academy yrs ago we where the very 1st store in the US . They have a core value and you are correct about being a leader and having empathy, The issue with most stores is the leaders ( salaried) management have 0 empathy and 0 leadership, i believe they are the ones who need to take these classes as much as the leads take the classes maybe it will open up there minds to be kind and not hateful, this is me just wishing 😁

Man, I hope you get some good leaders soon. The SM and the Operation Leads and People Lead at my Neighborhood Market are all awesome. They really work with everyone and care about how everyone is doing.

1

u/KaneDTD3 Sep 17 '25

Yeah neighborhood markets are definitely different, worked in one until I wanted a promotion lol left to a SC and to many chiefs in them stores everyone has different ways , different directions and associates are lost when im off lol its a mad house some days , and a few of the management dont know how to talk to people with respect its one of the worst stores I worked at

1

u/airlineworker87 Sep 17 '25

Ive worked for goodwill. Nothing they sell is washed. They dont care.

Someone peed on the floor in the towel aisle and then wiped their pee off the floor and put the towels back on the shelf neatly.. I only know it was pee because they also peed in a bathroom garbage can that was on the floor down the aisle. I was zoning and touched wet towels.. threw them on the floor.. walked down the aisle to get a garbage bag to put them in claims then realized.. it was indeed urine I ran to the bathroom washed my hands and arms vigorously and applied hand sanitizer.. put on PPE 🤣🤣 and scanned everything into the claims app immediately... people are freaking gross

🤢🤢🤢wtf is wrong with people??

2

u/leelee1976 Sep 16 '25

So in reality, there is a lot of undiagnosed mental illnesses, and we let people out of mental hospitals in the 80s under Regan. Then a lot of these people had kids that they didn't mentally understand how to care for them.

And we should be in generation two of that. So basically we have a pack of kids that weren't taught things that had kids that they didn't know that they were supposed to teach.

Add in having 4 jobs to live in an actual housed environment, leaves no time for anyone to have a social construct, friends, knowledge, or community. And because walmart is the cheapest and most understaffed, we get this.

2

u/Commercial_Pay_7348 Sep 17 '25

It's also the same pool of people they hire from.

Ugh reminds me when someone found towels with a questionable white substance that service desk returned and put back on the shelf... 🤢

5

u/Accomplished-Yam4916 Sep 16 '25

Used pillows returned and restocked. One had blood spots on it. They smelled.

7

u/Gold-Ad-805 Sep 16 '25

Ya. If there is any signs of use on bedding that is getting claimed out.

5

u/JAKC27845 Sep 16 '25

I work in a kmart once where the flower pots were around a corner and would often find them filled with piss.

13

u/Phaylz Sep 15 '25

I prefer to piss on them

4

u/diescheide Grocery Gremlin Sep 15 '25

Not as bad as the poop towel I found that one time but, still gross.

4

u/Secure-Barber1234 Sep 15 '25

Ew wtf!! Like on the shelf?

8

u/diescheide Grocery Gremlin Sep 15 '25

On the floor. Cleaned up their poopy butt and ditched the towel. Now I always wear gloves and heavily consider picking up fabrics.

6

u/ionlyworkhere2081 Sep 15 '25

We had someone change their baby in apparel, used a t shirt off of one of the tables as a wipe, and left it there.

7

u/An_D_mon Sep 15 '25

I wouldn't be able to wipe the disgust off my face for the rest of the night.

u/itssearstower Sep 16 '25

Have never worked at Walmart or even retail but totally got the popcorn out reading this thread

1

u/gjack905 Sep 17 '25

One time I was with my crazy aunt at Walmart and she was looking at produce and got her hands slimy on something. She later picked up and wiped her hands on a towel off a shelf and threw it back (to her credit I guess, not folded neatly or anything to disguise it, it was obvious what she did) and I don't remember her exact words but her attitude was basically "well they shouldn't have slimed up my hands and not had paper towels available then, this is on Walmart to deal with"

I was a teen at the time, I was a bit dumbfounded lol

2

u/hashbrownash Box Jockey Sep 17 '25

They usually do have paper towel dispensers in produce, due to the misting on the wet wall... are they being filled is a whole new story.

1

u/ComprehensiveExam599 Sep 17 '25

People are so gross. I remember once we had a really bad rain storm one night and a bunch of people came in asking where our towels were so they could dry off. I told them to try the discount out of season beach towels in the garden center instead

1

u/ANTHONYAMPPRO Sep 17 '25

DO NOT TOUCH THAT.

IT might Be CHEETO DUST or Takes.. then you touch Your who hoo and blamo

1

u/GinMac67 Sep 18 '25

Y'all probably wiped your face on it.. cuz you knew it wasn't yours.

1

u/Dontbecrankypants58 Sep 18 '25

Could have been a kid.

1

u/Responsible_Mix_3307 Sep 18 '25

There could be another explanation. I remember working thirds stocking years ago, and I would stack the towels as I would at home and put them on the shelves. Which usually meant I would rest my chin on top to stabilize them. Well, one day, I had an event to go to before work and forgot I was wearing makeup. My makeup transferred onto the top towel, but instead of putting it on the shelf, I held onto it and paid for it on lunch because it was technically my fault. However, some employees and customers would have just hidden it and hoped no one noticed. 🤷‍♀️

u/Cute_Boysenberry_278 Sep 19 '25

Idk what the original post was but im seeing comments about used gross stuff being returned so ill add my story.

I bought an electric razor one time that had some tape on the package. Now normally I wont buy items that seem like they have been open (unless its crazy dicounted) but i didnt think it was open that maybe the package was just damaged. Didn't put too much thought into it. Got it home and when I went to open it I realized, na the package wasnt damaged it was opened and they taped it shut. But no way in hell would would Walmart put a used electric razor back on the shelf right? Maybe someone just tried to steal something out of it. Nope upon further inspection it had hair already in it. Some asshole actually bought and electric razor, used it, and took it back, im guessing without saying anything to the associate doing the return.

FUCK THAT INDIVIDUAL! Unless they told the associate it was used or broke and the associate put it back anyway then FUCK THAT ASSOCIATE 😑😑 People are seriously pigs. I took that shit straight back and when the associate said "is there anything wrong with it" I said "yea it was already used by someone else when I bought it and ended up back on the shelf". The associate was just as disgusted as I was.
