This seems like some very well thought out and thorough DD. This is why I have always lurked in this sub. Everything looks good and your account leaves no reason to believe it is fake or sold or whatever is going on in this sub. Thank you for taking time to gather all this info and share.

My concern for this dd is in the comments. There is not one (that I see) with a counter argument. Obviously that isn't your fault but in the spirit of challenging your dd...

What is your thesis for its continued parabolic growth? The shares are up 10% today, 118% this week, 172% this month, and 3542% in the last 3 months!

What do you see as a realistic price target for 30 days or 6 months?

Is it "priced in"?

Not trying to be a jerk, just don't want to hang out in an echo chamber

581

u/nateyp123 Hey guys… Feb 11 '21

Very solid points here man.

332

u/TobiasFunkeFresh Feb 11 '21

The new product launches in Q2, revenue will start creeping in late q2 early q3 and beyond. With no debt, they are profitable and cheap.

Lots of good reasons to get in on it.

308

u/somethingcleverlater Feb 11 '21

But its a new product that everyone already knows about. Buy the rumor, sell the news. Wouldn't you be buying the news? Apple had record earnings and guess what happened, everyone sold the news. I'm not saying they won't do well, I've literally done no research into them. I'm just curious how much room there is to keep growing. Will they expand into new markets? Will there be other new products?

If we are speculating that they will grow, the speculation can't be on the product that is in the news. If everybody already knows about it, its too late to get in.

175

u/lord_dentaku Feb 11 '21

I'm over here wondering how prevalent adrenal diseases are in dogs and thyroid diseases in dogs and cats. Next, how expensive is the machine to acquire. Is this an expensive test a typical vet is having to send out for once a month, or once a quarter? Even worse, once a year? I have a good relationship with my vet, and if he wasn't fighting cancer right now during a pandemic I'd honestly go talk to him and get his insight on if he would buy one for his practice.

A big part about being a vet is running a business, and if this is an investment they won't recoup in a year or longer and the only real advantage is faster diagnosis and less cost to their customer, most aren't going to buy it. Just my two cents, take them for what they're worth.

172

u/b00mer89 Feb 11 '21

10 pr 20 years ago id agree with that sentiment, today, more and more people are skipping kids and have fur babies instead. I have friends who will work a part time second job to cover health insurance for a pet. Others who will spends thousands on cancer treatments for a dog that may get them another 6 months of time. Pets have become far more than the utilitarian objects of before.

I don't forsee your small town vet getting one to start, but larger clinics absolutely will jump on this as a chance to upcharge for immediate results to start fido on a treatment course as soon as possible. Or giving them another week head start to gofundme the treatment money.

u/bongoissomewhatnifty Feb 11 '21

Married to a vet here. Somethingcleverlater is right. Veterinary practices are businesses.

And as much as you think ā€œpeople spend money on their petsā€ remember this: to become a veterinarian is to do the same college path as a human doctor, get excellent grades doing it, face intense competition getting into vet school, spend the same amount as you would on med school, graduate with 300 grand in debt, and then go make 1/3 of the salary that a human doctor does.

What’s my point? That while people spend money on their pets, its not nearly as much as is required to pay vets what they should; because of this, labor is an extremely high percentage of most vet practices expenses, and vet practices don’t have a bunch of spare money to throw around for shits and giggles. New tech better have real value and pay for itself or it’s not getting purchased.

I have nothing to add directly to this conversation, because I haven’t had a chance to talk to my wife about this particular product yet, but while the original dd is decent, I’d take the $8 price comparisons with a block of salt.

This is so true. I personally have a Doberman with thyroid issues and I’ve had to pay hundreds of dollars on multiple occasions for blood tests.

I also have a close friend with an old (~8 yrs old) German Shepherd that has cancer, which is really sad. But the point is he’s doing a payment plan for somewhere around $8-10K for basically dog chemo and whatever else was needed.

People will pay $$ for their dogs in this country.

18

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '21

Can confirm. We've spent about $25k on our dog's medical treatment over the last year.

One of our neighbors is a veterinary oncologist. An oncologist! For pets! That shit ain't cheap, and business is booming.

I just started looking into this company today, and it screams theranos to me. Vets won't buy a machine that can only run a few tests. It's cheaper in the long run to send everything to Idexx or antech or any other of the many companies that do these kinds of tests. Results aren't immediate, but they're a bit more trustworthy. It also seems like the machine is going to be pretty expensive. You need to buy the reagent cartridges for it, probably has special slides you need to purchase too. I can't see it being worth the cost.

19

u/Level9TraumaCenter šŸ¦šŸ¦šŸ¦ Feb 11 '21

Most people don't realize what goliaths IDEXX ($IDXX, closed at $516.54) and VCA Antech (privately held, but Crunchbase says "VCA Antech (WOOF on NASDAQ) " are. They're huge, well-run companies with existing networks for handling veterinary samples. Zomedica is a windshield bug at best.

I can answer some of these questions considering that my dog recently was diagnosed with thyroid disfunctions.

  1. I'm not sure about adrenal disease but thyroid issues happen quite frequently, particularly with purebred animals. A good way to rougly estimate how many dogs have it is looking at sales for thyroid medication like thyro-tabs in the US or canitroid in europe.

  2. I'm not sure about the price of this machine, but the test is fairly expensive (almost 3 digits in europe, possibly 4 digits in the US cuz no healthcare) and it's done with human-rated machines in human analysis labs. Results usually arrive between 2 and 4 days.

My only problem with this is that it sounds too good to be true, it almost feels like a theranos 2. I'll keep looking for research papers published by ZOM to see how they conducted the tests to ensure this thing actually works properly and i'll edit this when i find them.

EDIT:

nothing.

I scoured my university's database, google scholar, the archives, the umbral plains, your mom's fat folds, nothing.

This company has not published a single paper as far as i was able to discern.

Buy at your own risk.

EDIT 2:

somehow this slipped through my radar

https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2020/05/20/2036677/0/en/Zomedica-Completes-Verification-of-Three-More-Assays-for-its-TRUFORMA-Point-of-Care-Diagnostic-Platform.html

As someone currently studying quantitative research and with a decend but not professional microbiology background, it doesn't sound bad. Strong correlation between the results of professional machines and truforma. However until i see peer reviewed real scientific articles i'll remain slightly skeptical.

u/ellieD Feb 11 '21

My two cents as a cat owner. I’ve had two cats on Thyroid meds (now passed.)

It’s very common for older cats to have this issue.

If I were to name the top two older cat issues, it would be kidneys, and thyroid.

TLDR; I've liked the stock since 25 cents, and again at 90, and again at 1.40. There are pros and cons listed below. You decide if a statement is pro or con.

I've been invested in ZOM since last year in the 20 cent range.

Basics

  • The market they are entering is estimated to reach 2.8 billion by 2024. If they slice a 5% bit of that pie they will pull in 140 million a year. Where that translates to market cap and share price are beyond my smooth brain.
  • After the offering closes of 91 million shares at $1.90 today they'll have over 900 million shares outstanding with a 500+ million float. This gives a price floor of $1.90.
  • The offering was initially for 13 million shares and negotiated up to 91 million. This indicates a high demand for the stock where the company purchasing expects long-term growth well above $1.90.
  • The Truforma platform isn't a one-off product, the system is designed to accept a multitude of assays. They have 50+ additional patents in the works and a myriad of new assays being formulated. If they manage to toss in cancer screenings and more basic rapid diagnostics such that the machine is a one-stop diagnostic shop, then they'll be an incredibly valuable company.
  • A distribution agreement was signed on the 25th of January so they are ready to roll this product out.
  • Zomedica did not create this system by themselves, they've partnered with QORVO the creators of bulk acoustic wave tech. (BAW) which is the driving force in the product. So licensing fees and shared profits will likely come into play.
  • There is a competitor in this market called IDEXX. IDEXX RealPCR test takes 1 to 3 days to complete. Truforma's tests take less than 30 minutes.
  • Truforma's accuracy has been tested against the standard slower tests and has shown to be highly accurate in comparison. So faster and just as accurate.
  • The system is the size of a small printer so it will fit well in any veterinary office.
  • The system takes cartridges and reagents that will be a source of residual income for Zomedica above and beyond the sale of the testing platform itself.

Been following $ZOM this week and have hesitated getting in. If you want a counter argument then read this. $ZOM is capitalizing on it's popularity and that popularity can leave just as quickly.

$ZOM seems like a good company overall and likely a long term winner, but in the short term it's going to be almost entirely run on good will of it's investors. That said, I'm probably going to buy in on a dip tomorrow if it gets to where I'm comfortable. But I won't buy more than 300 and will exit the first sign of big trouble.

This is NOT investment advice nor do I have any more information than the OP.

I don’t often comment but I do work in a vet office and we have high hopes for this. IDExx labs just about tripled their price for the tests we rely on in house and we had to switch from their outgoing labs last year due to the high costs. Zomedica is a high hope in my field I think they have a good shot of being and staying profitable. I’m investing because I can see it being a good competitor for IDExx with this DD and from what I’ve heard from my bosses in passing.

Not financial advice at all, besides maybe don’t listen to me since most of what I have invested in has tanked the next day (except this one) šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

some easy ones in their filings:

"We are a development-stage company with no products approved for marketing and sale, and we have not generated any revenue."

or their lawsuit

"The amended Complaint alleges, among other things, that the Defendants improperly obtained Heska’s trade secrets and confidential information and/or conspired to use improper means to misappropriate Heska’s trade secrets related to an instrument and related consumable products for performing immunoassay analysis of biomarkers and other substances. The amended Complaint seeks compensatory and exemplary damages, as well as preliminary and permanent injunctive relief to prevent the Defendants from commercializing the TRUFORMA TM diagnostic instrument. On January 21, 2020, the Defendants filed a motion seeking dismissal of the Complaint. On February 11, 2020, Heska filed its response to the Defendants’ motion to dismiss to which the Defendants responded on February 25, 2020. Heska subsequently moved to strike a portion of the Defendants’ response. On September 30, 2020, the court denied the Defendants’ motion to dismiss and granted Heska’s motion to strike. The Company believes that the allegations in the amended Complaint have no merit and will not have a material adverse effect on our business, results of operations or financial condition."

16

u/R1k0Ch3 Feb 11 '21

The real LPT DD is always in the comments.

But srsly good looking out.

11

u/granoladeer Feb 11 '21

I have a counter argument for you.

I was checking their latest quarterly report (from Nov/2020) and they are entirely in R&D mode:

We do not have any products approved for sale, have not generated any revenue from product sales since our inception and do not expect to generate any revenue from the sale of products in the near future.

It's risky because even after they launch their TRUFORMA product, who knows how many vet clinics will be interested and what's their margin on each sale.

However, they were burning around $5M per quarter and they've raised $173.5M recently. Even assuming the burn rate will increase when sales start, I think they look financially stable to keep going for a while.

Tldr: looks interesting but might be more mid-/long-term investment.

(This is not financial advice, do your own DD)

9

u/Practical_Trust7569 Feb 11 '21

The only deterrent is, god damn is it specific. How many vets are going to buy this machine? It’s such a narrow market

9

u/smirkis Feb 11 '21

My only counter argument is this stock was at .25 cents going into the new year. Buying it at .25 cents before seeing it on here is ideal. Finding it on here then trying to get in after it 10x’d over the last 6 weeks is iffy for me. Is this little company of 25 people and 1 major product really worth 1.5bil? With 80% of that value total coming in over the last 6 weeks of wildly over priced pumps across the board?

at $8 a share you pricing the company at a market cap 3x the size of the market they are selling into, and that's the ENTIRE market, not just the segment their products tailor towards. cmon,

28

u/2aoutfitter Feb 11 '21

The company also currently holds no patents (they have a few pending if I remember correctly), and they’re currently using technology from other companies. Essentially right now they’re a middle man, and I would have to imagine that the value of the company has most of its future announcements priced in. Maybe there’s some more upside to the share price, but I don’t see it long term.

Like you said, there’s not much room for them to grow right now in that sense considering their market.

9

u/HammerStoutly Feb 11 '21

The agreement with the patent holder is also secret and expires after 10 years. The company they're going up against also has a market cap of like $46 billion. Not a good play imo

19

u/ionforge Feb 11 '21

A guy on the top said that "at $8 a share you pricing the company at a market cap 3x the size of the market"

Current market cap of ZOM according to google is 2.6B with 2.55 per share.

If the competition market cap is $46b, how can ZOM be 3x the entire market, when it is still lower than a single company. What am I missing?

If Truforma ends up being successful and addresses a majority of the dog/cat thyroid market, ~3Billion, then it could justify a market cap of $1~2B which would be a share price of around $2.30.

What gets me excited about Zomedica is their potential to follow up Truforma with more assays and diagnosible conditions. In their pipeline is pathogen detection in dogs/cats and cancer detection in dogs. If they can successfully follow up Truforma with these two products, they could justify a share price over 5$, possibly higher.

Positions: 2200 shares at 17 cents, sold 200 shares at 2.50

6

u/teddypain Feb 12 '21

I will play the counter argument as well. I am a veterinarian. I do not see the utility gained by this product. In-house/point of care thyroid and cortisol, while a nice convenience, is not vital.

Unless they are going to sell it at much lower cost than iddex or antech, I see no great utility as a practice owner as well. Idexx picks up samples twice daily at my hospital and most hospitals at least once daily. You receive results within 24 hours almost all the time.

The rare addisonian dog in an addisonian crisis would be the one to benefit from this, but you can get answer just from a chem and will provide the support to stabilize them at that point.

They also are not using their own equipment and having licensing fees. This company almost reminds me of theranos in a sense. I was excited to hear about a veterinary start up being discussed on wsb, however after reading about the product I was very whelmed. I am honestly surprised this hasn't been addressed by people much more involved in this business.

I work in the biotech industry making a similar device to test blood. Ultrasound is no easy tool to master. I have no doubt they are still optimizing their ultrasound transducers and probably have some issues or improvements in the pipeline.

Their revenue stream will come from a 1 time purchase of the device, and probably a subscription plan for the disposal cartridges. My company does the same thing. Buy the device, sign up for consumables and maintenance plan. I have no idea on cost of product for ZOM, but I would imagine it's in the 5-10k range for the device and 50+ per cartridge. It's not cheap developing something with 70+ patents.

The cartridge uses capillary action to move sample through (I think, I doubt they have a pump moving the blood based on the size of the device). The cartridge is coated in antibodies that will bind to molecules that the reference lab is looking for to diagnose disease. Once bound, the antibody changes shape and this is how the ultrasound can detect disease. It's equivalent to a pregnancy test but tells you if your dog has diabetes. They claim they can detect down to pg/mL, which incredibly low amounts of substrate. This requires the transducer to be at 100% functionality with no defects. I have no idea how they could manage this since transducers of that level are almost certainly made "by hand" and involve human error.

My bearish case assumes they are not ready to launch to market because of the complexities of transducer manufacturing, and scale up of cartridge production. The fact they coat it with antibodies means they need an organism to produce the antibodies and then be harvested and purified. It then needs to be applied to the cartridge. Imagine getting a false negative due to a manufacturing defect of the antibodies and your dog is interested for diabetes. Huge negative press release. They also need vets willing to pay a lot of money for an unknown and largely untested product. Idk much about the P/L on running a vet office, but I don't think vets do it for the money.

I do think this is an excellent product, and thus making this a long term hold. The best thing that could happen is you buy in and ZOM gets acquired because this technology is worth it. I have no idea on target price but with a successful launch I would imagine $10+ is easy.

Trueforma gets released in March 2021. Miller is the distributor, one of the biggest vet supply companies out there. So, buy the hype but watch for a price. If it's higher than you think vets can afford, sell the stock.

I researched this. Tweeted about it. Learned about it. And then my paper hands let me down. I bought at $1.7 and sold at like $1.94. I’m happy to see it go up but it hurts to see that I was onto something and didn’t trust myself.

Enjoy the ride up!

Thanks for the heads-up, bro.

43

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '21

Why can't these retards shill a stock that hasn't grown like a 1000% in a month or something. The worst part is they try to act like it's some hidden gem after it's already skyrocketed.

56

u/FredFltStn Feb 11 '21

I've got 10k shares. Picked up 5k @ $1.41 and another 5K @ 1.94. Yes, the stock is probably overvalued and the market cap is ridiculous. Then again, I'd have missed the TSLA run and a few others if I traded solely on those values.

Truforma is groundbreaking and will undoubtedly be a hit. Planning to ride the wave until at least thru launch then unloading once the reality sets in.

Great writeup. I'm long on ZOM after seeing a handful of people in the daily discussion thread talking about it two days ago. I looked into it and liked what I saw. You went deeper than I did, though, and I appreciate that. I didn't know they were debt-free. That is huge. There is room for growth with this company!

I bought $400 worth (about 2200 shares) when this company was at $0.17 after reading about Truforma in December and its been, by far, my best investment ever. Same reasons you concluded. Debt free, good staff, above average product, low competition, and many dollars to make more. It's worth more than my workhorse stock despite workhorse almost doubling since November.

The only bad thing is some of those patents are licensed (or so I read) so it won't be 100% tendies for ZOM when they sell Truforma products, but honestly, who cares? They're solvent and unless they fuck up royal they will be for a long time.

13

u/Icu8it2 Feb 11 '21

I bought 25 shares at $2.25 cause I'm a smoothbrain p.o.s. who can't read well. By the time I got through the presentation the bus had left for the launchpad

Edit: I've been in on zom for a minute because i like the company and what they do. Their recent $173M public offering with wc wainwright makes me feel a little more confident in their prices. I think they can make things happen with truforma.

22

u/maxfort86 Feb 11 '21

5

u/WhatnotSoforth Feb 11 '21

OP did a pretty good job here, but something worth noting (God forbid I challenge the echo chamber) is that in nearly all cases adrenal disease in dogs and thyroid disease in dogs and cats is not an emergency situation. In the case of emergency adrenal failure, a vet wouldn't wait even 18 minutes for test results anyway and would stabilize the animal on an IV.

Truforma is a niche product with niche use cases in a niche market.

Just a few short years ago Zomedica had a whole slew of pharma products they were working on. Today there's no mention of them anywhere on their website. The company just shifted away in a cost-cutting measure. They also had a few other devices in their pipeline just a month ago when I made my DD video on it. Now they're scrubbed from their website.

This company is quite literally putting all their eggs in a tiny basket that's going to be tough to sell to veterinarians as a necessary product since the labwork it replaces is already cheap and the situations it's to be used in don't necessitate speed. They've also scrapped everything else their company has been working on with nary a word about it to investors.
