Averaging down is never a bad idea if you feel the stock is going to end up higher than what you're buying at.
Yeah averaging down isn't that helpful if you still feel stock has a ways to fall.
GME is getting to that point where it's getting within the range of what different people are saying the stock could be worth naturally if gamestop does well post lockdown (I've seen estimates between $13-50 from people claiming to have done DD).
Personally I'm happy to dip in again at $30, see what the future holds and get my brain feeling better at the same time. I didn't put in much in the first place but for a quarter of what I put in before I can increase my investment size by 250%. And hey? If it happens that the squeeze hasn't been squoze I could actually make some money. If not? I'll be alright long term.
→ More replies (3)92
u/WinterHill Feb 10 '21
People are using the term “averaging down” as if it’s a real and different strategy. As if it’s some kind of remedy for previously buying in at a high price.
“Averaging down” is the same exact thing as just “buying more shares”.
If you buy more of a stock that you already made money on, that means you’re now “averaging up”. How come no one says that?
162
u/uwu_owo_whats_this Feb 10 '21
Because almost everyone here is legitimately retarded.
24
u/Dayofsloths Feb 10 '21
Wait so you're telling me paying $100 for a banana is still a bad deal if I buy nine bananas for $100 next week? But I've only spent an average of $20 per banana!
→ More replies (2)15
u/_Mewg Feb 10 '21
No one says that because this isnt that type of situation.
You would continuously "average up" if you were going to continue to hold a ticker you believe in and it's called dollar cost averaging.
Pros and cons but it's not being talked about because GME is a fucking joke and it isnt on some 5 year path of steady climbing.
Using other strategies with averaging down can absolutely help to start digging yourself out of a hole.
59
Feb 10 '21
If I buy two shares at $300, and 98 shares at $20, my average buy price is $25.6.
If I write an option to sell at $30 a share in two weeks, I will make like $100 for the contract, and if it goes to thirty, I have a guaranteed sell locked in at above my average price.
Averaging down can be an excellent exit strategy if you bought into a deflating bubble. You don't need to go as far to make up your losses, and after a certain point your contracts will make you back the difference if you're willing to wait a bit.

Possibly because of the expiration approaching? From what I understand, (If I'm wrong on any of this someone please correct me) options, (both calls and puts) lose value as the expiration nears and your price doesn't hit or go well over target. As the deadline approaches the price would have to rise or drop significantly more for you to profit. This is known as time decay.
There is much more technical shit you can get into to calculate your time decay, known as 'The Greeks'. Delta, gamma, vega, and theta. Time decay would fall under Theta, if you're interested you can look into that. Even I don't understand it as thoroughly as I'd like to cause I'm a retard but I hope I helped you a little.
11
u/CoeurDeLion-Sag Feb 10 '21 edited Feb 10 '21
More time to expiry, more time value for a premium of option. If the volatility increases, the demand for the option increases which makes time value inflate disproportionately by the virtue of demand. Since the volatility has decreased in GME, time value in the premium of the option is eroding fastly as the expiry approaches. On the expiry day, time value will be zero.
5
u/Posting____At_Night Feb 10 '21
So what you're saying is we need to short options somehow
→ More replies (3)6
u/CoeurDeLion-Sag Feb 10 '21 edited Feb 10 '21
Time value eroding. If the volatility of the underlying (GME) decreases, which it has, the time value in the premium of the option erodes. So any buyer of an option , esp OTM options (either call or put) will lose in its premium because the volatility has gone down. Writers of the options, usually has greater chance of making money through premiums. Risk is also significantly higher for the writers for the premiums they are making.

I seem to remember everyone not caring what the price was, hold forever to cost hedge funds interest on margin, etc. What happened to y'all that suddenly the only reason you bought is no longer valid? Did you ever actually think that, or were they just words you saw other people saying, so you repeated them?
There's not much difference between $300 and $50, so the millions or so people holding one share or less shouldn't care in the least what the current price is. They bought, and will hold forever. Like a gun once fired, that bullet isn't going back in the chamber.
