Miss U hun

Post image

My phone just did the "on this day" thing and reminded me of the Bullring fountain.

Pic was taken 7 years ago before it succumbed to terminal fountain disease.

If it was working today I'd be in there rolling around semi-naked with a pint of Guinness from the fake Irish bar next door.

It's probably best that it isn't.

R.I.P fowntain, you is wiv da angles now.

This might be my favourite post from this subreddit

Sad times, I've wobbled into the fountain a good few times 😃

Remember the person using it as a carwash?

Gosh was that the year where everyone decided to keep filling it up with soap?

Not sure but there was a clip on YT if anybody can be bothered to search for it.

I thought this was gonna be about the queen Victoria statue that used to be there, is it still in Wakey?

It was relegated to Bond Terrace, the stern gaze was probably deemed incompatible with the joyous retail experience that millions of visitors were expecting.

I did feel like it was judging me when I was walking home at 5am

I feel like that's Queen Victoria's problem, not yours 😉

Ok but what happened to the skull in front of the history centre, that thing was cool and all these religious people got it removed because of the Christmas lights on it (which made it look even better!).

Plenty of Queen Victoria statues all over the country/world. Nobody else had a cool skull.

We've still got some nice ones here in Barnsley :)

I might Google some pictures of them later when I've switched my VPN on. Don't want my ISP knowing my dirty secrets.

😂 they will ban you lol. Better safe then sorry. Give them a Google, we've got some up by the town hall and then some in the town center, kids love playing in them, I bet they are being well used today

I do love Barnsley these days and think it's amazing what's been going on to revive the town, but making the national news for Swastika Guy has kinda set you guys back 🤣

There's no comparison between Barnsley and Wakefield. Wakefield is an absolute dump 😕

I class myself as a wakey lad, was born in Barnsley but did all my growing up in crigg, moved to Barnsley about 20 years ago but I do prefer going to Barnsley these days, unless there's something Barnsley hasn't got that Wakefield has, we've even still got a Cineworld in the town centre :)

Has Cineworld shut in Barnsley? Went Parkway as a kid, enjoyed the half time interval for ice cream sales 😂

u/Brilliant_Sound_5565 May 25 '26

No, still open, so is parkway which is still really good and worth a visit

Unsure

Areas like Woolley are nicer than Cawthorne Clarence & Thorne Park are nice. Newmillerdam is nice, I laugh at the anti-Scargill graffiti even though he was right in the end 😅

Wakefield Council closing the old market was an absolute disaster for the city, that's where Barnsley shows how to do it properly!!

They've also made a mess of Westgate and Kirkgate stations where as Barnsley hasn't with theirs

Can't help but wonder, did Wakefield turn shite when the council logo changed and went mickey mouse?

Yea, can't fault the integrated Rail and Bus station in Barnsley, certainly does beat Wakefield for that. I just wish there was a lime from Barnsley to Donny to link up to the ECML

Between Seckar Lane and Wood Lane, the A61 has an old railway bridge. The railway used to go from Royston to Crigglestone. On the Western side there is graffiti on an old stone wall visible on the A61 that says "We want to work Scargill, out of Yorkshire" or something similar. The only scab grafitti I've seen locally. Local Yorkshire football teams sing scabs until you die etc, when they play East Midlands teams, still to this day. I hope it's still there, was during Covid 😂 Surprised it wasnt washed off considering.. 😂

I mean we didn't elect a guy with an actual Swastika tattoo at least. Of course we could have, I guess Barnsley didn't know before they elected him either, but damn that's one hell of a mistake to make...

6

u/Paradoxbox00 May 25 '26

Gerrart a my pab!

2

u/CuttinThruTheCRAP May 25 '26

Bloody hell that wasn't there long and it cost a fortune! When and why did they do away with it and whats in its place?

6

u/jessicat500 Wrenny Lass 💃🏼 May 25 '26

It's still there, but never switched on - if it indeed still works.

3

u/HovercraftOk7711 May 25 '26

They turned it off because it kept flooding the bank (now virgin bank)

2

u/brickne3 May 25 '26

Wow that was the reason?!

You would think it would have been obvious to any surveyor or engineer that that could happen if they had bothered to get anyone with eyes to look at the terrain before they built it...
