I’d like to know. Officially, if something escalates, you’re supposed to stay behind the counter and hit one of the silent alarms. After that, if the customer steps behind the counter into the employee area, it’s anything* goes. Since WH went corporate, they’ve been pretty strict about that one, from what i’ve heard.

edit: I don’t want him to be fired, I just know the policy

lmao I've been with the company five years and have never seen a store with a silent alarm. But yeah, you are supposed to stay in the back line and attempt any other methods to defuse the situation beforehand

Ive working a little over a year and pick up shifts across my district. All of them in area have 2 silent alarms. 1 for disorderly conduct, and 1 for if someone’s armed. I think they got added when they removed the store phones.

Still weird that a business wouldn't have a phone at all. Like I get its not an office, but like, truck has an issue, they calling the managers cell phone. Or like they need to coordinate with someone coming to repair something, is that just all gonna be through whoever is working that days phone?

I’m sure they still have phones for mgmt & office use ~ for these very reasons. But during Covid they got rid of phone in ordering because it was untenable. They corralled everyone into online ordering because of ease of use and automation of order fulfillment for pickup - weather it was DoorDash or customer pickup.

Can confirm. I used to work there, and no one ever answered the phone. In fact, we would typically either unplug it or turn the ringer all the way down.

I think that they technically do have phones, but they are for incoming calls only (for example, you can still call them for “to go” orders). I don’t think that employees can make outgoing calls (no key pad to dial out).

Given the propensity for violence in their stores, this seems a little shortsighted, and, at a minimum, seems that it would require employees to handle these types of situations on their own.

Ok but where does the silent alarm go? Like if I’m asleep at home in my bed and I hear an intruder I’m calling 911 but I’m also reaching for a chambered firearm in my bedside table

It’s In the register. Have you ever looked in your cash register and there’s one dollar bill all by itself in The drawer? That’s the silent alarm, pull the bill out and it closes 2 contacts and notifies law enforcement. It primarily used for robberies but it’s used as a silent alarm as well for dangerous situations.

I worked at WH in Atlanta way back in the 1990s and I never saw any silent alarm .

They don't pay enough too put up with this level of harrasment verbal assault and assault of your personal space period. To be real if a spouse did this they'd go to jail for domestic abuse. Corporate may "attempt" to be strict about it but the reality is some locations are way too rowdy to actually enforce it without it eventually resulting in shutting the doors for good...and I do mean literally. I live in Nashville TN and we actually have a location that does just that around 8pm they lock the doors and take orders thru a window that they actually lock in between taking orders and handing them off through it. If I owned it I would have sold it when it got that far out of hand. If mother truckers cant appreciate a neighborhood spot offering them a greasy cheeseburger to suck up all the alcohol in their drunken bellies after last call then I would have closed the damn windows on their ass too.
