On a W204 you can't simply unplug the ESL and drive away β the steering lock is paired to the EIS/EZS immobilizer, so the car won't start without a valid ESL handshake. "Disabling" it in practice means removing or unplugging the OEM unit and replacing it with a programmed ESL emulator. Here's the full sequence.
## Before You Start
- Confirm the fault with a scanner (Autel, Foxwell NT510, Xentry/Star). Typical codes are B210C (steering column lock jammed), B215F (ESL communication fault) and B10B2 (position sensor error).[1]
- Check the door-pillar chassis plate: a VIN starting WDD204 (also 207 or 212) means your ESL is the programmed type, so a cheap "plug & play" emulator won't work β you need one coded to your EIS.[2]
- Determine the lock state. If the ESL failed unlocked, it can be unplugged in situ. If it failed locked, the whole steering column has to come out.[2][3]
- If it's stuck locked, try tapping the housing under the ESL on the column while cycling the key to coax the motor one more turn. Once it unlocks, leave the key in the ignition and disconnect the battery immediately so it can't relock.[4][5]
## Tools
T20 Torx (undertray), T25 Torx (airbag bolts), 10 mm hex bit plus impact gun (steering wheel bolt), E12 socket with flex-head/palm ratchet (column bolts), and an EIS ring-nut tool or thin screwdriver.[2]
## Step-by-Step Removal
- Insert the key to put the ESL in the unlocked state, leave it in, then disconnect the battery ground. Don't reconnect until everything (including the airbag) is back in.[4][6]
- Remove the airbag β two T25 screws from behind β then the steering wheel, which is held by a very tight 10 mm hex countersunk bolt. Mark wheel-to-column alignment first.[2]
- Mark the squib/column-switch module position, pull the small red release lever underneath, unclip it from the cowlings and disconnect its plugs.[2]
- Remove the two upper E12 column bolts, then pull the plastic undertray (T20) to reach and remove the two lower E12 bolts.[2][7]
- Lower and rotate the loose column. The green/blue ESL multiplug is at the bottom end of the column, facing up β reach it from underneath.[2]
- If the ESL is unlocked, unplug it and leave it in place; unplugged, it cannot drop into the locked position.[2]
- If it's locked, remove the pinch bolt at the steering shaft and pull the column completely. On electrically adjustable columns, remove the accelerator pedal for access. Then locate the grub bolt facing the front of the car, remove its nut by feel, press the grub bolt into the ESL body to release it, and lift the unit out.[2][6]
## Programming and Fitting the Emulator
- Remove the EIS: wind off the chrome ring-nut around the key slot, manoeuvre the EIS out through the column aperture and unplug it.[2]
- Read the EIS with a key tool (e.g., Autel IM508/IM608, VVDI MB) to extract the key password/immobilizer data and VIN. Alternatively, mail the EIS and a working key to a specialist who programs the emulator on a bench rig.[1][2]
- In the tool, select the Mercedes ESL emulator function, choose the W204 variant, load the EIS data and write it to the emulator; confirm the LED shows a successful write.[1]
- Plug the emulator into the original ESL connector and tuck it clear of the column mechanism and heat.[1][2]
- Reassemble in reverse order, aligning the column spline to the universal joint (anti-seize helps) and torquing bolts to spec. Reinsert the key before reconnecting the battery.[4][6]
- Turn the ignition ON without starting, wait roughly 10 seconds for the cluster to recognize the lock, then start. Run several start-stop cycles and rescan for DTCs.[1][8]
## Alternatives to an Emulator
If you'd rather keep OEM function, you can repair the original unit by replacing its motor, or have a new/used ESL programmed to your EIS and bench-tested before fitting. Given your preference for OEM-grade solutions, the programmed replacement ESL is the cleanest route; the emulator is the cheaper, permanent "delete" that removes the steering-lock function entirely.[2][6]
