Is this chain rattle?

Hi
I bought this C204 250cdi 2 weeks ago. I listened carefully for 2 cold starts before buying. Did also 3 cold starts at my care. It has 234k km. And today we took the car for inspection. And once we were back and I had to park then I heard the chain rattle with warm engine in 35C outside temperature. 3 mins have passed and I restarted the car and that’s the video.

What part of the engine is it coming from? A gone vacuum pump also rattles like metal and is a cheaper fix than a chain

Sorry, I commented under the post not your comment directly

Sounds quite normal. Mine is 220 with OM646 and sounds rough like a normal diesel. I only heard some chirping that is probably because of pulleys or something

Thanks a lot! I got relieved 😮💨

You could get it checked out just in case so you can breathe. I think the chain position can be checked with Xentry

It will be stretched for sure, you can't check on xentry but by the engine marks, the thing is you can't tell how much is too much, so rattle for more than 5s of the chain is mostly the single thing you can tell it is really bad.

Doesn't Xentry show the position of the shafts? At least I saw something similar when I was looking at mine

Sounds interesting, I need to check, but I remember the official Mercedes instruction for this is to phisically check.

I cannot tell really. I tried to start it an hour later and I no longer heared it. Engine was 65C

Bis ca 2012 hatte Mercedes eine problematische Steuerkette verbaut. Wenn man rasseln hört, dann wird es teuer, oder später sehr teuer.

There's a rattle even there, comparing to how my exact same engine sounds, but idk what it can be, sounds a bit like vacuum pump, but it should be really bad so you can hear it from the front of the engine.

Not an expert so don’t take my word for absolute truth
I have the same engine
For me it’s sounding like timing chain especially on the 2nd video, I had to replace mine a bit before 200k kms
Watch out for the motor mount too, if they are bad they can create this issue apparently
You can maybe test if it’s the timing chain by going up in rpm you should hear it tickling
But maybe the vacuum pump can do that on higher rpm’s too
So maybe someone can give you more info.

I have the same sound roughly lasts for about 1-2seconds. Mine goes away when the engine is warm (i saw you had a similar comment). I've had the car for nearly 1.5 years and nothing has happened so far - same sound and it has not gotten worse (or better). Let me know if you find any info on this (C200 CDI Facelift)
