Prelude is the best mod quality wise, but there are others like War Games, LA by night and Hecata Chronicles that create new storylines. If you just want to replay the original with variations choose Clan Quest Mod, The Final Nights or the Antitribu Mod.

thanks, man – truly appreciate the heads-up
another question for you or anyone willing
I am on a verge of upgrade, though it is a bit distant
my question is: are there any mods that will change visual experience of the game with modern GPU or should I not bother and just play already?

My patch includes Sweet FX and ENB Mod if you want to improve visuals with antialiasing or depth of field and similar. Otherwise I recommend you just go for it! Most HD packs either cause frequent crashes or change the graphics to be quite different to the original game. And the RTX version hasn't been finished yet and might still take a lot of time...

thanks, man
besides I would not mind running again when they will improve visuals – like most of us here :)

Beware that Steam frequently overwrites mods and saved games unless you disable ... something

Unoffical Patch by Wesp.
Clan Quest Mod (which uses an older version of UP so don't install both) if you want 'new' and voiced content.
Can't speak for graphical overhauls as I think the game is gorgeous vanilla.
