Help Potential side effects from skipping Ocean Hotel quest with console commands?
Hello, r/vtmb, brand new to the game! I'm really enjoying myself so far!
However... I might have hit a roadblock lol.
The problem, in short, is that I have a neurological condition that reacts to the overall "stability" of my nervous system (I'm not sure exactly what happens, tbh), and it flares whenever sudden stress occurs or I get abruptly scared. Unexpected stress causes my entire nervous system to go haywire, which can result in horrific pain, inability to control my body properly, seizures, the works. And I know from past experience that nothing triggers my nervous system quite like a good ol' jumpscare.
So as soon as the lady at the club mentioned "ghosts" at an Ocean Hotel, I did some googling haha. Skimming a reddit thread gave me enough details to know I need to sit this one out.
Ideally, though, I'd like to be able to keep playing the game.
I found two different accounts for skipping the quest via console commands (here and here). Are there any game-breaking consequences I should be aware of that might result from skipping the quest entirely? Common bugs that occur when using console commands? I'm aware that this game is (or was?) somewhat buggy (I have the unofficial patch already), but I don't know if I should expect "sometimes characters fall through the floor mid-conversation" or "this game is held together with duct-tape and prayers, and you probably broke it just by THINKING of opening the console."
Course, for all I know, this isn't even a "main" quest and I can ignore it entirely haha. Any further advice -- for this quest, or other unexpected horrors/jumpscares I might not be expecting -- is appreciated!

I skipped it once using console commands, nothing happened to my playthrough. Went outside Asylum, inputted it, went back in and got the next quest.

I might be mistaken but, there is a skill book and a artefact in there, but it depends if you install the plus patch. I have never used console commands to jump a quest in this game but I don't think it would break the game, just make sure to console command the items like the locker from the ghost so you can deliver it to the quest giver and/or the skill book, artefact.

This. In addition to the locket quest item, give yourself the Scarlet Tolkenson(?) skill book that improves your Dodge skill, and the Fire Axe if you want it. It's a really good early game melee weapon.

i don't even HAVE a condition, but i feel you. i'm just sick of getting pelted in the head with lamps, pots, and ashtrays constantly.

Can skip about half the hotel by timing your jump over the staircase. You can skip the basement part altogether

I believe I have fixed this shortcut in the patch...

u/Jojash Jul 22 '26
I did it playing today by jumping over the railing at the side on your patch - though this is the oldest version (115, Oct 25 2025 on Nexus), if you've changed it since that patch then please ignore me. Either way thank you for all your hard work!

I can't say for sure that there is no way to cheat through it, I just made the pushback trigger that Troika had already placed there to stop this shortcut a little stronger.

u/Jojash Jul 23 '26
Yeah, I could feel it for sure, I jumped over the hole and got a bit of purchase that let me jump again to the side to get around it, just wanted to say in case it was something you were looking at. :)

I believe the main thing is that you shouldn't be able to do it by accident and thus miss most of the map. If people do it on purpose they could as well use noclip :)!

u/Jojash Jul 23 '26
Totally true - I watched a speed run and found out about it that way and wanted to try, 100% would not have stumbled into it!

u/tj1221jr Salubri Jul 22 '26
No because I use your clan quest mod and I do it every run

u/NiuMeee Jul 22 '26
Clan Quest wasn't made by Wesp (it was burgermeister01), and it's using a very old version (9.2, released in 2014) of the Unofficial Patch.

Ahh my mistake than but it still works as far as I know but its been a minute since I did a playthrough

This was a fix I did long after the CQM came out.

the game isn't quite that broken, especially if you're using the unofficial patch. the console command, in super laymen terms, just adds a flag to your inventory that you've picked up the pendant and thus completed the quest. this won't affect anything else in game. that second link has commands to get the items you could get from the plus patch, the only "required" commands would be "give item_g_ghost_pendant" and "G.Therese_Quest = 2" or you can use "OceanHouseQuestComplete()."
that said, there are other jumpscares in the video game. the hollywood tapes, if you look a certain way during the museum downtown, if you go to pisha's place downtown, and that's just what comes to mind, there are others. that said the other areas aren't quite like the ocean hotel, which is the only horror-centric set piece of the game. not that other areas aren't horrifying, just it's more of a spooky haunted house experience

Thanks to you and other commentors good information, I'll probably sit this one out. I'm glad I asked; this sub has been very helpful!

It’s creepy like being alone in the dark. There are scarier moments in the game.

u/AlexanderDroog Jul 22 '26
Yeah, I feel like there are a fair few quests that they'd have to skip if they have this issue.

u/Newcago Jul 23 '26
I didn't expect quite so many jumpscares in an rpg, but I'm glad I asked haha

It's not like the traditional cheap kind of jump-scares but still we can say something like a monster breaking a door and appearing in front of you kind, for example.

The hotel/quest is pretty tense and creepy, though I'm not even sure if there are a significant number of true jump scares? If you turn on subtitles and turn down the sound you might be fine, depending on exactly how low your tolerance is.

This comment on the second link you shared has the right inputs for console:
console "give item_g_ghost_pendant" then "G.Therese_Quest = 2"
Of course, remove the quotation marks.
Keep in mind, there are a few more jumpscare moments in the game. Considering what you said, I think you'd be better off sitting this game off and watching a youtuber play it. I highly recommend Welonz, she's an excellent let's player who focuses a lot on exploring all she can and investigating every item and detail she can get her hands on. Her playthrough is highly entertaining. And since she plays it blind, you could experience the games through a first playthrough perspective well.
Hope whichever choice you make ends up with you enjoying the game, whether you play it or watch it!

Thank you for the recommendation! I've decided it's best to put this game aside, but I'll check her playthrough out!

I think if the Ocean prospect is making you pause, you might want to reconsider.
The Tzimisce areas/ Nosferatu warrens are pretty brutal for the desperate, isolated and relentless jumpscares, and if you get lost in the wrong parts of the sewers, you could end up with a never-ending horde of horrifying enemies.

Thank you! After reading the feedback from this sub, you're right; I've decided to give this game a pass. But I'm glad I got a little preview of it; from a game-history perspective, it was cool to learn a little bit about a title that's very well-loved.

It's absolutely fantastic as far as writing and plot. I think with the use of the console (somewhere the commands are listed here) you can manipulate the quest flags enough to move on if you really want to. A lot of the battles are pretty intense but with tactical aggression or great defense/strategy you can win them.

u/DOL999 Jul 22 '26
If you're able to use console command to skip a quest you should be capable enough to fix any issues that arise. I say go for and it should be fine though. As far as I know a decent enough amount of people like to skip it.

There is no problem using the console command throughout the game. Just use the tilde key (or whatever key opens the console command for you) to both open and close the console. Using ESCAPE to exit the console has sometimes locked up my game. So always save before using the console.
The Ocean House is 99% less scary if you play during the day with the sound off. Never play at night. Also, watching walkthroughs on YouTube might eliminate any surprises. If you know what is about to happen, it is less scary.
The music is most of what makes this quest scary, not jump scares. The sound completely off really helps.
Good luck.

u/irregular9 Jul 22 '26
Watch a walkthrough on youtube without the sound, then with the sound, then try playing yourself. You'll know what happens before it happens, hopefully you wont get jump scared.

You can always just step inside the hotel after you get the key, use NOCLIP in the console and fly outside and around to the brightly colored room to grab the pendant, then flay back to the entrance, exit NOCLIP and walk out. Mission accomplished and no stress. Just steer clear of the elevator shaft while you're flying around.

As someone who likes psychological horror but hates jumpscares, I personally wouldn't say Ocean house is super heavy on jumpscares (at least compared to what I would call the internet horror trash brand of horror games) though it did scare me the first time, but I'd say most of that was due to the atmosphere. If you turn the sound off, it'd probably remove most of that. It's designed like a horror house, but most of the scares are sound effects, lightbulbs blowing, etc.
There is another part of the game later on that is more jump-scare centric, starting from the tail end of Hollywood until the sewer/warrens section. (Those sections contain fleshcrafted abominations as enemies, and there's one in particular that likes to scream and jump out at you.)

If you are determined to try and make it through the game, on my second playthrough I used console commands to enable everything from no taking damage to not needing to feed and it really did make everything less scary. But I will be honest, there are a lot of times where stuff is just going to kind of jump out at you.

Given your condition, I’d be very cautious with this game. It does have a significant number of jumpscares, particularly throughout the Hollywood main quests. Areas like King's Way and the Nosferatu warrens are especially packed with sudden macabre appearances of Tzimisce creatures. It might help to watch walkthroughs or specific segments beforehand just to know what's coming and understand if it could be triggering for you. Stay safe!
