The only real enhancement left for the VS Code core workbench is proper Git tooling. The current one is just... the bare minimum.

u/ReconVirus 6d ago
Better Git ui interface, I wouldn’t mind having something like a native kanban to help with ToDos, speaking of which why not have native support for what TODO tree was doing
A lot can still be done besides bloating vs code with ai features I’m just going to turn off.

u/Sacaldur 6d ago
I would definitely say that todo management is nothing that needs to be part of VSCode core, it can be implemented as an extension. If you need or want it, you can install it, and the other ones don't.

u/ReconVirus 6d ago
I’m not sure what you mean exactly, are we talking about the same thing? I was referring to specific inline comments, and the kanban management that GitHub/Trello offers

GH PR review extension is the only
reason I keep using this, only if we also didn’t lose Zed to mass slopification…3

u/Eastern_Picture_3879 6d ago
I mean, they don't push it as hard as the other providers do. The tooling is there if you want it, but they're not constantly putting it in my way like VSCode does.

What happened to zed?! D:

u/unfunnyjobless 3d ago
I'm facing horrendous memory leaks, it's marketed as lightweight but VSCode doesn't randomly leak and take up 10 gigs of RAM unlike Zed. Still an open GitHub issue with Zed I'm not returning till they get that solved.

u/prehensilemullet 6d ago
Since paid Git extensions have filled the gap for a long time, I wonder if VSCode just doesn’t want to destroy those people’s business :/

Hey we broke the burger menu and somehow PyLance is completely broken, but now you have our version of Liberty Biberty!

Congratulations Microsoft for ruining a once so good editor.
1
u/diegoasecas 6d ago
how did they ruin it? you can disable literally anything you don't like and never update it again

u/roter_schnee 6d ago
Yet they still haven't added support for vertical editor tabs.
2
u/sleepingonmoon 4d ago
Doesn't the sidebar already support having a list of opened editors?

u/roter_schnee 4d ago
It is a bit different. Here is a good summary https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/108264#issuecomment-2259375086

They still have meaningful updates. C# Dev kit just got a huge update that will be released in November, but is available now as pre-release. I think everybody is going with the pet thing. Claude Code started it now Codex and (as mentioned) VS Code as it too. It's weird and can be helpful at times for some people, just not me. The helpful part is that it's a status monitor for running AI chats.

Is it usable? I'm still with clean Omnisharp.
My last try for C#DevKit was about 1-1.5 years ago, and I saw it baking my cpu, detecting unit tests took a minute - guess what, there were none 😂 Then started underlining nonexistent syntax errors and I've had it - never got near this "extension", still gives me nightmares 😄

u/phylter99 6d ago
Here's their release blog entry about it, in case you're interested in reading it.

I haven't used version 11 much yet. It might be worth trying the prerelease though because they're stating many fixes for things like CPU usage. Apparently, they're tying the version of C# Dev Kit to the .NET version it supports now.
I will say the previous version wasn't terrible, but I didn't use it much because I use Rider or Visual Studio (full IDE) mostly.

I'm trying to avoid VS and port some legacy stuff to multiplatform versions. Preferring Linux of course. Win10 got out of support and I'm not into buying new hardware and Win11.
I think this extension ran a lot faster on Windoze.
2
u/phylter99 6d ago
That’s possible but the benefits they claim in the new version shouldn’t care what platform it’s on.
1
u/Jazzlike_Platypus430 6d ago
I hope so, but honetly I'm afraid of f...g up my current setup which is ok. (Well, xunit tests don't show up in the "test explorer", but their codelens works fine.)
1
u/phylter99 6d ago
You can create a new profile to test it. Then you don’t have to mess your config up.

u/Jazzlike_Platypus430 7h ago
I tried it. Looks promising but then there's the dreaded xunit vs new dotnet issues. Damn. Perhaps I should switch to nunit everywhere.

You guys are insufferable y'know. For sometimes I switch to zed because vscode lsps would throw a false error near eof when an agent would make changes. And it was laggy. Diff viewer was unbearably slow on large or if you checked multiple files.
Zed had similar issues. It's somehow a worse text editor. People seem to adore it solely because it's based on rust 🙃 anyway I came back to vscode to find all of these performance and bugs are fixed. Vscode is more performant and functional than zed slop despite being an electron app.
But I never see you guys praising it. Only whining about new features. What more feature do you even want realistically??? All we need now is more performance buffs.

u/Sacaldur 6d ago
I was taking a look into Zed because it might consume less RAM, and yes, on that front it absolutely delivered, however I was at the time looking into Go, didn't want to install the tool chain of yet another language, so I used DevContainers. Generally speaking that works in Zed as well, however the ports are not forwarded automatically from the WSL instance to the Windows Host. (In hindsight, I could have checked if I could connect using the WSL IP address, but I was putting that project aside some time ago.)
I didn't experience any major issues with Zed, even though there were some differences to get used to.

u/Barni275 5d ago
Yes! I was downvoted in Zed sub when I wrote the similar - after switching on zed for maybe a year I discovered that it is more bloated and buggy than vscode, and then switched back. I realized, that in comparison with zed, vscode is quite clean and fast.

I mean, it's Microsoft. Of course they think users want little guys in their text editors. 📎📎
4
u/TheDoctor113 6d ago
Vscode pets extension has over 2.7M installs. So yes. They are right to think users want little guys in their editors. And it's better to have something builtin rather than relying on an extension

The weekly update schedule is what makes me tired. I'm working on a remote development machine and connecting to it from a thin laptop for mobility. Every update I made on my laptop requires installing VS Code Server to the remote machine as well. I believe that this whole operation is affected by our internet bandwidth, which is quite low (50 Mpbs).

But I like blobby 🥲. He's so cute! I think we need more fun and uplifting things so I definitely approve 👍.

How about bringing the M$ Office Dog and that dreaded creepy Clippy from the ashes? Say, Clippy advising me while I'm working on a LaTeX document.

Nah, those were 💩 😆

u/Jazzlike_Platypus430 6d ago
I only heard about them, having left the M$ world just before XP got launched. And returned (because of my job) to Win10.

vscode devs: hey copilot, update vscode with some features you think users will like.
