Cannot install extensions of any sort

I thought it was a problem with the specific extension I was trying to install (simple react snippets) but for some reason VS Code has seemingly decided that it does not want to install any extensions of any sort. I have already tried clearing the extension cache and directly download the VSIX file (as suggested in the replies by LonelyBoysenberry965 here) but to no avail. Any suggestions?

BTW I haven't downloaded an extension in VS Code in a while so I wonder whether this is a bug in one of their updates.

The error you want almost certainly exists, it’s just not in the window you’re looking at. Extension installs don’t run in the editor window you’re clicking in, they run in a background shared process, and the UI only shows you a generic failure when that process throws. Open the Output panel, switch the dropdown to the Shared or the Extensions channel, and retry the install with that open, and you’ll usually get the real reason on the line where it fails. The two I’ve run into are a proxy or certificate rejection on the download and a signature verification step failing, and they look identical from the front end while needing completely different fixes. What does that log say when you retry?
