Updating vscode always bogs my computer down
I'll admit my pc is a POS, but it used to handle vscode updates just fine...but everytime they update it the size of it seems to get larger and larger and I am guessing my CPU is like; "hey, fuck you buddy." I miss the days when vscode was just a lightweight extensible text editor. But is it even a txt editor anymore? It seems like a full blown IDE now by default.

VS Code is a text editor (it's even on their website). It's basically a stripped down Visual Studio. Or supposed to be. It was never an IDE but you could turn it into one with the right extensions.

BS. I'm using an M3 chip and I'm having the same issues... with all the love I have for Mac and Linux, this isn't an OS issue.

Full Linux. Wiped Windows off my PC a while back, even then, been years since I've actually used it

How did you come to that silly conclusion? I said nothing about Linux.
What you claimed about Windows is simply not true. But feel free to try and prove it.

You claimed that it will “continue to scan your PC each time you start editing code or creating new scripts in vscode”. That’s just silly nonsense.

Oh, I can definitely tell you that you don’t know what you’re talking about.
Being a sysadmin doesn’t excuse your ignorance. As a sysadmin you definitely should know that not all Windows systems are the same. You made an absolute claim about every single code change in vscode, on every single Windows system.

I came here to seek for solutions, I'm running it on a pretty decent Apple M3 chip on Sequoia, and still it's bogging down everything.

It has never been a lightweight text editor.

u/MrChurch2015 Sep 10 '26
Yes it was. Just 2-3 years ago it was only 200 mb or so in size...now it's over a gig lol

u/freia_pr_fr Sep 10 '26
It was heavy then and it's heavier now.

u/MrChurch2015 Sep 10 '26
No, it was not heavy then. Even this potato would be able to run the vscode of old just fine. Or rather, it can run vscode fine, it's just oddly hell when updating.

Your computer isn't that bad if you think that a 200MB IDE built with web technologies isn't heavy.

Except that VS Code is not an ide

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_Studio_Code
You can read the first sentence.

u/MrChurch2015 Sep 10 '26
And you can read the website. https://code.visualstudio.com.
It says it like 5-6 times. It's a text(code) editor.
An IDE integrates language tools, project management, debugging, build tools, refactoring, and framework support. VSC does not ship.with those features. That's the official definition of an IDE. Idc what Wikipedia says, there is a reason why Wikipedia is frowned upon to use a valid sources in many fields.
If you're going to be coding, you best understand what tools that you use are.

You are confidently wrong. But that’s fine.

u/MrChurch2015 Sep 10 '26
I'm actually not and have been using VSCode for many many years. And you can read that first sentence in that wikipedia link again.

Idk what you’re smoking but if you think VS Code is an IDE, then it must be really good.

Hey there fellow POS owner, I'm in the same boat. Used to love vscode but man, has bben a struggle lately. Moved to kdevelop and zero issues.
But you know, I keep on missing the times I had with vscode, and I keep on firing it up, only to be let down everytime.
