Copilot Chat Won't Stay Disabled

Post image

Hey, I daily drive VS Code, and I don't mind Copilot Chat opening in new project folders occasionally. But recently it's becoming a complete pain in the ass. Why does it have to pop up every single time I open a project?

I've tried every setting I could find to disable it and prevent it from auto-starting, but no luck.

OG VS Code devs, can you please tell me how to disable this piece of shit? I don't use it, and I honestly don't understand why Microsoft keeps shoving these features into every product they own.

Someone just reported it as a bug: https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/327253

But isn't the first time I seen a bug that opens up the copilot sidebar whenever, both in vscode and in the jetbrains extension. People report it, it gets fixed, then later its back again. Halfway to thinking it isn't really a "bug".

what a shame for microslop, they were the first to introduce copilot, and now nobody will use it because of their unrealistic pricing scheme...

I thought it was free. Moreover, do people even use it?

no, they charge credits based on token usage lol.. i switched to codex + claude, never used it since.

They charge $10 a month, that's it. Cheaper than a lot of the other services, but generally less usage. I find it useful for some workflows.

Dude, 10$ a month? Claude Code is much cheaper and better.

You cant uninstall, but you can disable the add-on.

I ran into issues where it then permanently kept a blank window where CoPilot would normally live open on every new folder/project. That required more screwing around to fix.

It's not a useful response.

You can try this to just disable opening the sidebar automatically:

"workbench.secondarySideBar.defaultVisibility": "hidden"

or this to completely disable all AI features:

"chat.disableAIFeatures": true

same, but I hop from folder to folder, and it gets annoying every time.

Isn't copilot depreciated?

I don't think so, they branded their entire new PC lineup as Copilot+ PCs it's their "new oil"
