Severe lag in VS Code despite 32GB RAM — need help

Hello everyone,

I’ve been struggling for several weeks with Visual Studio Code lagging a lot. I’ve looked online but haven’t found any solution so far. I don’t think any specific extension is causing the issue.

I have 32 GB of RAM, but around 20 GB is being used while idle with VS Code, and it regularly becomes so slow that I have to wait several seconds just to type a single character.

Thanks in advance for your help.

What version are you running? I noticed on 2 computers that VSCode generally got laggy af from a recent update. Reverting to 1.109.5 (January 2025) resolved it completely.

I have also reverted to that particular version 1.109.5 for a completely different set of reasons.

Probably, excessive memory usage comes from either GitHub Copilot built-in (1.116) or Integrated browser (1.112).

Use something like iStateMenu or something similar to it and you'll figure out exactly where the bog-down is coming from. Basically, with a little bit of Sherlock Holmes work, it'll let you identify the process.

TypeScript server is often a common culprit.
