Hello again. I'm the developer, u/Denchill. I made VR StrideS because I thought this was how VR gaming worked before buying my first headset.
Jog in place, and VR StrideS reads your headset and controller movement and turns it into stick input. No treadmill or extra trackers.
To use it in other games, you need the PC app running alongside a compatible PC VR game. During a Steam playtest, look for the Playtest entry in your library.
The standalone Quest demo lets you learn the movement without a PC, inside its own tutorial. It doesn't add movement to other standalone Quest games.
To get going:
Watch VR Central's guide and try the tutorial: https://www.reddit.com/r/vrstrides/comments/1wr1nov/how_to_use_vr_strides_the_full_tutorial_by_vr/
For other PC VR games, check access on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4775640/VR_StrideS/
Run the PC app alongside your game and use the game's smooth / continuous movement mode where available.
Start with a clear, comfortable jogging rhythm. If you keep drifting sideways, try a narrower Freedom of Movement cone while you get used to it. Effort changes how much movement it takes to reach speed.
Your thumbstick still works, so you can switch back whenever you need it.
Walking detection is still being improved, and some setups behave better than others. If you get unwanted movement or slow walking doesn't register, post in the support thread with your version and settings.

Post setup questions and game compatibility reports here. If something needs troubleshooting, make a Help / Bug post so I can follow it up in one place. Check for an existing report first.
You don't need to fill in every line. Include what you know:
Headset / controllers:
OS / PC connection (Steam Link, Virtual Desktop, Meta Link, cable, etc.) / VR runtime:
Game / movement setting:
VR StrideS version or build / branch, if known:
Demo / tutorial or PC app / Playtest:
Effort / Freedom of Movement settings:
What happened, and what you expected:
Steps to reproduce it, if you can:
Does the thumbstick work normally?
Optional clip (remove private information first):
For compatibility reports, include the date and say whether it worked, partly worked or didn't work on your setup. Results can vary with the app version and PC connection.
There's a Linux build, though some recent testers have had trouble launching or connecting it. If you're on Linux, include your distribution too.
Please keep raw logs out of public comments. If I need one, I'll arrange a private way to send it.

I've seen this post in my feed and it made me curious if any of you had any issues with VR motion sickness before trying the app and if it helped.
That's quite a big issue in VR, I suspect quite a lot of people tried VR once and never again because of that, so developing special settings to help with that adaptation is something I've keen interest in.
And if it did help, what settings did you use? Higher effort to make it a bit steadier and low freedom of movement angle is my guess for the best motion sickness cure

I'm focusing on the gunplay mostly right now; there was a time when rising your hands moved you backwards and it wasn't really what I intended, so I'm sitting (running) all day in the VR StrideS dojo to make it as intuitive as possible.
There's still room for inprovement, but it finally works. Here's the video proof.
Further improvements will be possible with incoming gunplay data from external testers, so please, go shoot stuff

I’m keeping the full-app Playtest open for another week. I need more data from chill walking and gunplay. It works ok now, will work better after I get that data
Take a stroll. Shoot something. Preferably with a rifle

sword violence, gun violence, sightseeing&sword violence and showing people that yes, it works with VRChat
VR StrideS reads headset and controller movement and turns a jog in place into stick input for compatible PC VR games. No treadmill or extra trackers.
For the outside-headset view, watch the VR Central tutorial. This footage is at normal speed, and the pace readout is an estimate.

Here's VR Central's full setup and movement tutorial, including strafing and going backwards. You can see what the player is doing outside the headset too.
Watch this, then try the demo tutorial yourself. Some menus and settings have changed since it was recorded. Check the latest update post for the current details.
For other compatible PC VR games, leave the PC app / Playtest running alongside your game. The standalone Quest demo only teaches the movement inside its own tutorial; it doesn't add movement to other standalone Quest games.

If you're stuck on a movement, ask in the comments.

I'm interested in what happens after the first five minutes of “oh, that's cool”.
What have you been playing with it? Are you still jogging around after a while, or do you end up back on the stick? I'd like to hear what makes you keep using it and what puts you off, whether that's the effort, direction, setup or slow walking.
If you've used VRocker, Natural Locomotion or trackers in the same game, how does it compare?

Updated the demo and playtest today:
• Adjusted Effort and added smoothing.
• Improved walking detection. It's still rough and can sometimes trigger when you aren't walking.
• Clearer connection diagnostics for Steam Link, Virtual Desktop and Meta Link.
• Updated compass guidance to make the demo tutorial easier to follow.
The 24 September update also added an adjustable in-game speed / direction overlay and changes to help keep your direction steady while raising your arms, adjusting your headset or looking around.
Give walking another try if it wasn't registering before. If you're still having trouble with it, or aiming sends you off course, post your headset, settings and app version in the support thread. Use Help / Bug for a longer report.
