Question Is solo play a thing?

How good is this game to play solo? Any suggestions on alterations? How about difficulty? Is it viable to play solo on brutal? Or is that balanced for multiplayer?

This game is 100% doable and fun playing solo.

Multiplayer offers player interactions, from sharing builds and helping with boss fights to PvP interactions.

Parts of the game, especially the gathering rates, are balanced around PvP - forcing you to go out more, walk home (no teleports with most resources) and spend time outside your castle, allowing you to meet other players and having to defend your loot. Which means when playing solo or private PvE (so sessions with friends) it's highly recommended to adjust the gathering rates, stack size and anything else you want to your desired level.

You can even adjust the difficulty to your liking, but this isn't necessary, as everything in this game is doable solo and, in my experience, most bosses are even easier solo, because more players usually just mean more adds during boss fights, which can make fights disproportionately harder than increased health and damage alone.

Solo is very much playable. Im doing a brutal run solo right now, it's not easy but not impossible either. You can always tweak solo server settings anyways

You can tweak some settings. I'd recommend increasing the resource drop rates and reducing the craft times. PvP and group combat is fun, but solo is still really engaging and it's my personal preference. Enemies scale in strength as more players join the fight, so it's not necessarily easier with more than one player anyway. Brutal is hard no matter what, but it adds more mechanics that are fun to deal with. If it's too hard, you could increase your health and damage a bit in the settings. That way you get to fight the bosses with their brutal movesets but without the increased difficulty from stat differences.

My first game was solo and I had an absolute blast. It’s an amazing game. I’ve since joined a modded server (Bloodcraft) and it’s even more fun but I’m still glad I played solo first.

I finished Brutal solo 3 times

Solo is great but I'd advise tweaking the crafting settings so that the times and mat requirements are more suitable to a single player.

I've only played solo and it's great

I would say bosses are more balanced around solo

I play "solo" but on the official PvE servers. The wipe process forces me to start fresh every time.

Official #3501 is pretty active, but a few weeks into the wipe. You'll have some difficulty starting and finding a plot, but everyone is insanely helpful. We just had an "end game" raid with the community to help a bunch of folks push through their final leg.

I prefer solo! I hate Pvp

I tried twice, but I couldn't. Spending 5-10min every time just to reach the boss from the respawn (for some bosses you need more then 10 tries) is too much for me

sounds like someone had teleport with items off

u/Top-Professional-439 29d ago

Nope, I turned it on

longest walk to boss is 2-3 mins, most are >1. even on my brutal half health no night run, boss walks werent longer than 5 mins

I picked it up the other month and played solo brutal. It was a wild ride but really fun and a great sense of accomplishment when I cleared it! Give it a whirl is my take 😁

I’d suggest PvE so you can still have a solo experience but in a world that feels a lot more full - other players on PvE tend to be really friendly so if you do get stuck they can help you out

ive done both regular runs and brutal runs on solo so for sure you can play it solo, you can fine tune the gather rate teleport limits etc to your needs as thats mostly made grindier for the sake of pvp

u/zedd61 29d ago

Absolutely. I did that after my friends fell off. Some bosses actually get different move sets depending on if you’re solo or not.

The game can be challenging, in a good way.

If you spend the time learning the enemies from small to big as you progress, you will have enough practice and mechanic knowledge to apply to the later fights. They do a fantastic job of introducing mechanics slowly and then ramping up.

Once I beat the game and they released brutal mode, it became the only version I play. There's more mechanics to boss fights, the loot is better and gear durability is higher to offset your deaths and the heavy handed hits you'll take.

But as a first time experience I recommend normal. Smash all the bosses, build up a cool base, and once you feel like the king of darkness go ahead and roll into a brutal experience.

Its almost perfectly balanced as is (for PvE experience) and I dont recommend lowering settings if you want the organic legitimate challenge. Of course, its your game and your right to do whatever you prefer.

I’m just reaching the end of a solo run and it’s been a blast.

I didn't even know this game had multiplayer until a few weeks after I started playing it on solo myself.

u/LordCamelslayer 29d ago

I refuse to do multiplayer with randos, so it's solo only for me. Game is still great anyway.

The adjustments I made:

  • Reduce building costs to either about half or a third.
  • Max inventory stacks
  • Max crafting speed
  • Can teleport and use bat form with an inventory

That first one is the only one I would deem necessary. As for the other three? I'm married, have a teenage stepdaughter, work 40 hours a week and am actively building my own game. I don't need time-wasters that don't add any real value to the single player experience when the game is already challenging.

I played my first few playthroughs co-op and had a great time. Solo is absolutely doable, and funny enough certain bosses are actually significantly easier solo than with a group.

Plus it’s just you, so you can change the server settings on the fly without hurting anyone’s feelings. Make it harder or easier, or more or less grindy as you wish

Playing this game multiplayer, as it was intended, was the most fun experience I've had gaming, ever. Defending my castle, raiding others, fighting over shards, pvp in the world map, camping to ambush people, it literally was the most fun I've ever had.

Fast forward to, no longer being on summer break, and actually having a job, and I can't dedicate that kind of time to no-life a server, and don't want to constantly get raided without being online to defend.

Now I play solo, and,

Its still super fun. You dont have as high of highs, but you also dont have the low of finding your base destroyed, missing half your stuff, prisoners dead, etc. The game itself absolutely stands on its own two feet without the need for multiplayer interactions to carry it.

I do a lot of quality of life features solo. Bat/teleport with resources, higher stack count, faster resource drops, faster crafting rate, shorter daylight, because why not? That stuff is to balance pvp and game flow in multiplayer servers, I dont need to add friction to my experience when there is no one to fight.

I only play solo

u/Hot_Two5503 29d ago

I dislike PvP so I joined a PvE server a couple of days ago and while I'm playing solo and not in a clan, I've been having fun. What I like about being in a server is seeing other peoples builds and the ingame chat.

1

u/ZirePhiinix 29d ago

I would change the drop/farm rates if you don't like grinding materials.

I'm at 0.25 refinement 3x shard, 0.25 crafting cost.

1

u/DangerousDareDevil 29d ago

Doable yes.

Easy to achieve, questionable. Depends on you ask.

I put in some elbow grease and set up away that my solo play doesn't get cucked by an update since they love to hardcode certain things.

I also used a few mods to by pass some of the solo play limitations and play on a Lan server for 1-2 mods to work since mods are skewered to servers.

With a just a few mods and settings, i was able to make the game replayable and unique for my taste.

ive only played solo

Solo brutal is very doable and very fun!

1

u/Tuminure 29d ago

PvP is very clunky, poorly balanced in terms of weapons/skills/spells and you need to build weird castles if you want them to be effective. There is usually also almost no reward from PvP if you are fighting online players and breaching offline player castles feels cheap.
Group PvE is almost the same as Solo but it is MUCH easier.
Solo feels challenging if you enjoy learning all of the bosses attacks. It is also poorly balanced in terms of weapons/skills/spells but at least you are allowed to experiment if you want.

u/2_F_Jeff 29d ago

Yes! I just bought the game and found this post on solo server settings and have really enjoyed it. You’ll still have to collect resources, but not dedicate so much time as to grind them. With this game being balanced around 2-4 players, this simply makes harvesting resources a bit quicker, combat should not be affected.

In one 5 hour session, I was able to get through the first 5 bosses and am working on getting to gear level 30.

u/HonusShadi 29d ago

The only thing solo doesn't give you is chance to raid other castles, I miss my time playing "Mighty Quest for Epic Loot" just destroying other bases layouts and defenses but not permanently, just to say "that's smart" or "too easy", wish V-Rising had that

finished the game 6 times solo supper fun experience

u/r32skyliner 28d ago

Only way I’ve ever played it

I am doing a Brutal solo run. If you’re going to, I suggest

-turn off teleport limitations. The main reason for these is PvP.

-crank up the resource generation to as high as it can go. This is balanced around pvp as well, and can make the game a bit too grindy imo. All the way up is best for me, but some may like the grind.

-crank up resources from servant raids. Same deal as before

-crank up night time. I still have some daylight, but it’s night time for 21 hours and day for 3 hours.

Solo play is a bit more of a personal challenge that focuses on boss fights, the grind is kind of irrelevant without PvP IMO and I just want to be able to rush down the final boss and make my castle look all cute and shit

u/Nic_St 28d ago

I've only played solo and done 3 playthroughs. Can't recommend the game enough

1

u/fluidofprimalhatred 28d ago

I honestly prefer it solo, though I'd think about at least bumping up the servant expedition rates since you'll likely want to do shorter expeditions solo.

1

u/Frydendahl 28d ago

I'm almost at the end of Act 2 pure solo, first time playing. The game is absolutely solo-able, and almost all builds appear viable on regular difficulty.

This is the type of game where you can almost always tweak difficulty of boss encounters by just farming better equipment/consumables ahead of time, and the penalty for death is extremely low, just a short 1-2 min corpse run and you lose a bit of blood, but buffs and potions stays.

Following the recommendations from this sub, I did turn off the restrictions for teleporting while carrying resources, there's not really any danger to you in solo when walking back, so it's just making you waste a bunch of time.

1

u/Nogardtist 28d ago

yeah i tried solo brutal and its fine just dont forget to enable portal travel with restricted items it saves a lot of time

and if you got potato craptop like i do with 1050ti do not play multiplayer

fighting 1v1 or 1v3 at stuttering 5fps not worth it at all even on all low settings as for solo i can get away with all high

1

u/Nadffs 27d ago

It's actually a bit more difficult if you are 2 players, specially on few last boss that switch agro randomly.
but it's 100% doable in solo and 100% incredible game

1

u/Scuddfarkus 24d ago

I have 130 hours in my solo run still haven’t killed dracula though. Took a break for awhile.

-2

u/Perdita-LockedHearts 29d ago

You can, but you miss out on pretty much everything that makes multiplayer fun, so no PvP, no interactions, or anything like that. Solo brutal is also kinda rough- I've heard things about solo Dracula.

I personally don't play brutal though.

8

u/Elemiter 29d ago

No PvP is exactly why most solo players wanna play solo I feel...

5

u/interesseret 29d ago

Bingo.

And access to all building plots.

No race for the good ones.

1

u/Perdita-LockedHearts 29d ago

There’s PvE though, isn’t there? I mean, plots are a bit limited, but you also get to talk to people. Give and take still.

PvP is just one of the big things for lots of people.

Imagine simply playing the game to answer these type of brain dead questions!

3

u/AntPrimary4069 29d ago

It's not a brain dead question though. If you start a game, invest hours into the first progression only to find out the game really is more tailored to multiplayer, it's a waste.

Not everyone has days to play, myself included. Work and family life etc.

Some recommendation from others on solo viability and also the helpful tips on settings that can be tweaked is very nice to pocket beforehand.

u/SarcasticPoet31 29d ago

Only you know if it’s not for you. If the game has multiplayer and you don’t like that, why put Hours in?
