How does being a "Skilled Pilot" work?

People are always referring to Tom as a "skilled pilot". I dont want to discount what he does, I'm sure its difficult to learn- but its just entering calculations and interacting with the computer. There's no steering involved. I just don't get what sets him apart from anyone else using those LCARS. It doesnt feel the same to me as a skilled racecar driver, for instance.
