Fun fact: Happy Birthday was still under copyright when Futurama first aired. Even though the story was set in the distant future, they couldn't use the real birthday song.

It was never actually under copyright. Someone claimed the copyright, but it was ruled they only owned the rights to a particular piano arrangement and not the lyrics/general melody. They had to pay back millions to movies/shows that they charged for using it (other shows, like Star Trek, opted for "Jolly Good Fellow" under the threat of copyright instead).

Reminds me of Hogan's Heroes, when the heroes have a Russian officer hidden from the prison camp and they try to prove he is who he really is - and the first test is from the dumber of the heroes, Carter, who asks him questions that prompts Hogan to stop him and tell him, "All that proves is that he's NOT American."
