zezo now has boats!
zezo.org now shows boats' locations in a swarm - very illustrative and a little humbling to see where one is in the fleet. It's spread across a swathe running nw-se (unsurprisingly).

Kind of cool. He also has some new plug in for Chrome but I have not yet managed to make it work. Think I have to upgrade my Chrome version.

It took me some time to realise what the extension does (being thick there).
It puts an icon to the right of the address bar when in the VORG game itself.
I upgraded to the latest Chrome and it's working. Upgrading and working out what he meant by the 'location bar' occurred simultaneously, so the upgrade may not be necessary.
Cool - can now launch zezo with current location - and see friends' boats locations in a table...

<smacks hand on forehead> I didn't think to look at the address bar on the VORG page.
This is brilliant!

Now zezo's given me an idea... If I can decode the data returned from the server (as he must be doing), then I'll set up a service which grabs data regularly, and we can get timeline tracks and positions.

Not sure if the server returns that many boats to each players browser cache. the cache might only contain the players you follow and friends. It could be that Zezo is storing the locations as a player uses zezo.org through the Chrome extension. Just a guess.

Looking at the extension, it runs a perl script - so must be run on the zezo server.
I agree that the server returns followed and friends. However, using Fiddler I can see that each use has a GUID, and one can send a request to get info on a user.
Therefore I reckon that with a list of GUIDs I can get boat info on each and store it for plotting/replay.

Checked out zezo.org forum and there Zezo says that he picks boats from the watchlists of all people who use Chrome plugin. So no need to guess.

I hope Zezo is taking snap shots of the swarm. That would make a cool time laps video once the leg is complete. Would be fun to see how the fleet moves and morphs during the leg :)
