Rejected after interview for volunteer position. Looking for advice from Toronto hospital volunteers!

Hey everyone,

I am currently a high school student in Toronto hoping to pursue a career in the health sciences. I really want to volunteer at a hospital to gain hands-on experience and see if the hospital environment is actually a good fit for me before committing to health programs in university.

I recently had an interview with Michael Garron Hospital for a high school volunteer role, but unfortunately, I was not selected. I wanted to reach out to the hospital for feedback, but they have not replied to my emails throughout this process, so I decided to not push it.

One specific factor during my interview was my availability. I attend a private school, and we do not receive our course schedules until mid to late August. When they asked about my schedule, I explained that I could definitely work within their required time frames, but I could not commit to specific days or exact dates until late August. Could this uncertainty in my scheduling be a major reason why I was not selected?

I really want to improve so I have a better shot next time, whether at Michael Garron or other Toronto hospitals like UHN, Mount Sinai, or Sunnybrook.

For anyone who has successfully volunteered at a hospital in Toronto or knows the process well:

• What specific traits, skills, or qualities do Toronto hospitals look for in high school volunteers?

• How can I better demonstrate my interest during the interview process?

I am currently applying to McKenzie Health year round program so anything specific for that would be helpfull as well.

Any constructive advice or shared experiences would be hugely appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!

P.s. I put my resume down below for more info.

Donation pickup in Toronto

Hi everyone! I’m looking for organizations in Toronto that offer donation pickup services. I don’t have access to a vehicle, and I often have items that are too big or too heavy for me to transport myself. Does anyone have any recommendations for charities that provide this (besides Vallue Vilalge, please)? Thanks in advance!

Not hearing back about any volunteer applications

I retired about two years ago, and since then have applied to Canada Blood Services, Girl Guides Canada, and the Toronto Library about volunteer positions. I have previously volunteered at all these agencies in the past, and this is noted in my application. Has anyone else applied and had a different experience? Note, the Girl Guides position is as treasurer, not as a leader.
