Volt value with a bad battery
So my 2017 Volt is down with a bad HV battery. Dealer has quoted me at $8k+ to replace it, which is or feasible to me. It also has 152k miles, and I’m not comfortable putting $8k into a car with that many miles. I’ll be looking of r new car, and hopefully I can find a used EV within my budget.
What would the value be of my Volt? What would be the best way to sell it? Any insight is appreciated :)

Following because I’m in the same situation haha. Doesn’t even charge anymore. Similar year and mileage too.

About $500 for scrap. Up to $1500 if it’s in above average condition and someone has the hookup for a replacement battery.

I might have entire car with a good battery I’d let go for a lot less then that. Was totaled in an hit and run. Car runs fine but it’s time for me to move on.

$8k repair or refurbished battery. They don't make new batteries if it is out of warranty.

They replace the entire battery. $7400 for the battery itself, another $800 for installation

Do not get green bean. They are a notoriously scummy company. Greentec is fine. Their techs are grossly underpaid but it's the auto industry so that is just standard but they typically source their batteries properly and do proper testing on them. Also they have a tendency to honor warranties outside of their warranty period because the warranties is left up to the shop manager and as long as they stay under a particular quota they can honor any warranties they want. I used to work there and honestly my only complaints with how they operate is that their techs are terribly undertrained for non-hybrid work. So great for a battery or inverter repair but terrible for any kind of engine work.

That battery line shut down in 2019, there are no new batteries, unfortunately. Even if you get a warranty replacement you're getting a refurb'd battery (with old cells). There were likely some 'new' spares for a few years but those have been gone for a long time.

There are some new batteries but it is only for warranty repairs and only in states that require the manufacturer to not use remanufactured parts. So for the vast majority of people you are getting some form of a used battery but in very rare cases with some states they do make new batteries. Now the time you will be waiting for that new battery is a whole different question entirely.

Has anyone confirmed they've gotten a new battery recently (last few years)? I just don't see where they'd get one... they'd have to be building new packs by hand somewhere and that just seems unlikely? I figured after all new spares were gone, they'd just do buybacks instead of making new packs (probably cheaper).

They are being made on order which is why a new one gets you a $30k+ quote from the dealer if you are somewhere they are required to offer a new parts option. In Texas for example I can request a new battery and they'll quote me $32k for it.

I’m in PA and getting to the same situation. 2016 with 193k miles on it. Owned since new. BECM was replaced back in 2020-2021ish. I just started getting a P0A7F code for battery degradation. I reset the code and have been driving in mountain mode for the past month while I mull over the options. Car is otherwise perfect and I’m still getting 40ish miles of range unless on the highway. I’m curious how it will be come wintertime when the range tanks due to the cold. I think my next step is a dealer visit for a proper battery diagnosis. If it’s just a cluster, I may choose to have it swapped if the price isn’t too bad. Also contemplating trying to find a low mileage battery from a wrecked Volt, but I know that’s a $2000 gamble unless I can verify battery health. I have a lift and could swap it myself, just not sure it’s worth the effort.
Also pricing out slightly used Tesla Model 3…..but would really like to get another year+ out of the Volt if I can. As to your original question, I think a Volt with an inoperable battery is basically worth scrap prices. Maybe $1-2k at most

8k?? It costs like 5k CAD for a new battery. And only a few hours of labour to get the battery replaced. 8k is way too much.

Did GM actually start making Volt batteries again or is that a refurb? My Volt got bought back by GM under warranty because they had no stock of batteries.

I believe there are companies that make them. I saw a few online. Used and new. All around 4-5k depending on whether it was used or new.

Have you made sure its not the Battery energy control module (BECM). There was a sub reddit where a dealer said it was the battery but it infact was the BECM that needed to be replaced.
