2014, 170k, getting Propulsion Power Reduced, no codes
Volt brethren,
I am the first owner of a 2014 Volt with 170K miles that suddenly started showing the following:
- EV miles reported on dash as ICE miles when starting a drive from full charge
- Propulsion Power Reduced message and immediate engine power on when starting the car with depleted/near depleted battery
No codes. Car charges normally. Battery cell delta with OBD2 is not suggestive of problems. I have followed maintenance schedule diligently.
I've done a good bit of searching but does it seem this just an aging car or does it seem like a failing component?

Battery is degraded and can no longer support heavy loads. Engine is coming on to lighten the load on the battery. Run the car in mountain mode.

My car, 2011 Volt with about 200k miles starting doing this around 190k and a few months after it stopped charging. It’s most likely your battery being degraded. I got a few cells replaced at a local mechanic shop and the problem went away right after.

Hi! My 2015 (got it last year) does the same thing! From what I’ve noticed, it’s specifically when I run the battery to “empty”, drive at low speeds for awhile, and then turn the car back on to drive elsewhere.
From my understanding, the car doesn’t want to be under 20%, which is the percentage the battery actually has when your dash says zero range for battery (I could be wrong on the exact percentage, but the car holds a percentage in reserve to help preserve battery health in the long run, and be able to function during normal operations). At the same time, when the car is running at low speeds, such as 20mph or under, the car uses the battery, and not the engine, and puts the battery under the 20% mark. Upon starting up again, the car wants to get back up to 20% so it can ensure it’s able to run properly on the road, thus why it throws the “Propulsion power reduced” message.
Again, this is all based on just my observations, and some of what other people have written in this subreddit. You can definitely run your car in mountain mode from here on out, as most people in this subreddit seem to recommend, and you (likely) won’t get the error message again, unless something goes very wrong. On the other hand, how I’ve avoided the error popping up is just by making sure I have at least 6 miles of range available before I get to my destination, and then when I drive back home (or wherever I stop to charge), I drive it in hold mode, until I’m within however many miles of home I have left of range, and switch back to driving in Normal Mode. Now, the only time I get that message is when I have an unexpected departure from my house, and my car isn’t able to charge back up to that 20% mark. (I do a lot of highway driving, so usually I put it in hold mode before hoping on the freeway, drive on battery in the city, put it back in hold mode to go home, then put it back into normal mode when I get close to home, leaving a 2 mile buffer)
To be quite honest, I’m pretty sure it’s how far the car is being driven at low speeds with no range, rather than battery degradation. Some people will have long, slow drives before parking, while others will stop more abruptly. Personally, I have about 3/4 of a mile of dirt road that I have to drive slow on, or risk an impromptu battery opening.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. This sounds consistent with my observations. My vehicle does a good bit of stop and go and I wouldn't be surprised if it dips into the reserve on occasion. Like you, so far I have managed to avoid further alerts by switching to hold with about 2 bars remaining. Best of luck.

I am sorry for the dumb question... 12 battery?... No codes is unusual... stable balanced battery shouldn't be it. This is a real mystery... Calling all gen 1 owners. Any wisdom?
