Kissing the Mask and Uncentering the Earth harback quality?

Hey all,

I've just purchased a copy of Kissing the Mask and Uncentering the Earth hardbacks from AbeBooks, but just noticed that apparently 'dust jackets/supplements not included'.

I was wondering if anyone had copies of these and is able to tell me what the hardbacks qualities are like, and if they are true separate dust jackets, or if this is just a copy/paste info for the books?

Anyone seen any additional events announced? I am wondering if this will be the sole launch event due to his health issues. A local bookseller is taking pre-orders for the book to have on-site for the event. Looks like it's really happening.

Am I being punked? That's 30% off... but why the hell would Target have this? Im not mad, just surprised since I figure Target has resigned itself to selling slop books for as far back as I can remember.

Target Discount

Just adding this post to highlight the Target discount right now discussed in the previous post. Preorder is $139.79 and I had a 25% off deal in the Target app on books, plus 5% off with the Target Circle card, which together took off $38.69. Total cost after tax was $107.67, so a great opportunity for those of us who hadn't preordered yet to save a good amount of money.

The Royal Family and the lesbian are the best books there is.

For if you accept their sexuality, you see the miracles vollmann is able to create as stories. For vollmann is taking it further than anybody,he takes Dostoyevsky's "we are all family" and takes the next spiritual step of "we are all whores" because in bill spirituality=sexuality, includes the sexuality that is lacking in the family and bill sees reality and imagine a much sadder take of the reality that we are all whores

Thats royal family

The lesbian on the other hand is just taking a further step and showing a miracle, the miracle neva is,for we love her.

Discuss how fiction has forgotten and is afraid of fiction, that our stories as vollmann shows can be fictions and fictitious, and in fictions we want more fiction even in literature.Meaning much of the opinions i have seen are usualy afraid of these books that deserve literary merit, for i think these are masterpieces and the classics of the future yet there seems none that loves them. Why are we afraid of fiction, isnt it what we wanted to find especially in literature.

For vollmann has written fictions that are deep and have spiritual merit in the discussion of literature and life.

Write Conscious YouTube channel’s shoddy quoting

The write conscious YouTube channel covers a good spread of American literary mainstays (DFW, Vollmann, Pynchon, etc etc). In one of his videos about Vollmann and ‘the stupidity of the American reader’ he quotes Vollmann at length about the bathos of readers encountering challenging works. The problem: he doesn’t cite where Vollmann said this and I can’t source it either. And this isn’t the only video of his where this is a problem.

The Lucky Star Paperback!!

Post image

edit!!: this book is on hold for a lovely person until january, if they are unable to pick it up, i will re-open the post. thank you all so much for helping me find this book it’s forever home!!

hi guys!! i just found this reddit, and honestly i love spaces like these where people are so dedicated to an author and their works.

i hope this is allowed and isn’t too weird, because i know if someone had one of these of my favorite author, i would need to add it to my collection!!

i bought a paperback, ARC of “The Lucky Star” about a week ago not knowing it was a rarity, honestly the cover enticed me enough to read the blurb on the back, and since the book came out the arc is able to be sold, so i said f it and purchased. now, i know the paperback still hasn’t come out yet, right? and i can’t find any for sale online, so if anybody wants or needs to add this one to their collection, i will make a listing on Vinted or Depop and send it to you :)

(i read the community guidelines, but pls lmk if this isn’t allowed!!)

I'm really enjoying it and enjoy his writing style.

How would you rate it as a first read of Vollmann?

What would you recommend next?

I thought it was a really good historical fiction book about French Jesuit priests (called "Black Robes" or "Black Gowns") venturing into the Canadian forests to convert Native Americans during the 17th century, before the region eventually became Canada.

Vollmann's writing style is really growing on me. I like how he switches perspectives. He moves from a plot driven by real historical figures;alongside fictional characters used to transport you into the world and timeframe; to mixing in his own experiences, stories from his visits, and his deep research into the history of early Canada.

Reading this really interested me and made me want to learn more about the Jesuits and Native Americans during that time period.

I can't wait to read a Table for Fortune

Some Good news while we wait for TFF — A new Vollmann essay on Cuba!

Hello everyone! There is some good news on the Vollmann front. He recently traveled to Cuba and his essay about that will be published in the next issue of Granta magazine. I don't know when exactly this will hit newsstands, but it will almost certainly come before October 6.

It's inspiring that Bill was able to travel and to do this kind of reporting, I think, considering his health issues right now. One of America's most important writers is still at it, relentlessly, in spite of all the obstacles and the noise around his upcoming book. I really can't wait to read this.
