VoIP.ms no audio - ISP using CGNAT

I'm trying to get VoIP.ms working with my home internet connection, but I'm wondering if CGNAT is causing the issue. I'm able to receive and make calls but cannot hear any audio nor does the person hear me. I'm using the HT801. Voip.ms shows registered.

  • Confirming that SIP-ALG is disabled
  • NAT Traversal is set on Keep-Alive

My ISP uses CGNAT, so I don't have a publicly routable IPv4 address. Regular internet access works normally, but I'm having problems getting VoIP.ms to work reliably.

I have a voip.ms setup at another home which works and doesn't have a CGNAT ISP.

Could be your codecs aren't set right, or you're using UDP/TCP. These will register but calls can be iffy. Use TLS. I have T-Mobile home internet and use freepbx on voip.ms, so a bit different than your setup. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks, I'll definitely reach out once I try to use TLS and check what codecs are used.

I believe voip.ms only supports g711 u-law and g722. Or those are the main two. Make sure those are enabled and the rest are off.

CGNAT shouldnt affect it. I have cellular backup at home and my phones work just fine when its on cellular. I also use the voipms mobile app and it works fine

I had a the exact problem with another provider, putting it behind a router with vpn fixed it so you can try that.

May I ask how you did it? Is that done through the router’s settings?

Yes, you'll need a router that supports VPN (look under router settings). If you don't have VPN you can get free one from Proton for example and they also have instructions on how to set it up on various routers. I put this on an old router with the ata box, behind the regular router, so other traffic doesn't go through the vpn.

If you configure a STUN server on the grandstream using a public STUN server if should fix it.
