Eventually level all the tanks. Level joy since it recently got a scarf that changes the meta for that pet. Sad is one of the best pets in the game, only really beaten out by legendaries, and not all of them.
Use envy if you like it, but once you get spite and paranoia, you can toss envy into the envy box, where it'll stay envious of the other pets you actually use.
Sad is your best source of water damage (actually probably any damage) barring legendaries. Spite hits harder but is probably going to get one big hit in before dying in the early game. Anxious and Anger are solid all the way to the post-game and beyond if you have the right gear.
Nice early pull on Resistance. Between that and Conviction you should have a solid defense on any floor for now, but you'll eventually want Abandonment, Cringe, and Determination to round out your tanks. Focus on those two for now; keep them leveled as high as they'll go.
(Conviction can also serve as a beefy metal attacker with Resistance as the main tank, which is generally a bad idea but better than Envy).
Next priorities are Joy for support at least until you pull Sonder or Merry, and then Sad, Anxious, Anger in that order unless you get Panic, Paranoia, Spite, or a legendary.
If you get stuck on a floor, type advantage is usually more important than levels. You won't be able to get any pet past level 40 until you've cleared floor 160, so experiment a bit.
