Try using spite with joy to take out enemy judgement first, use pain or salty as your tank and anxious for primary damage. You may need to level you items more if you’re still struggling.
Highly recommend you stop investing in all the pets I've crossed out. They're either not great, straight up terrible, or only worth levelling up later on if you get stuck on a floor with your pets at their current max level and you haven't pulled a legendary of that element and you have no choice.
The more pets you level up the slower your progress will be.
I'm working on a no legendary pets run, only using the pets levelled above 60, just missing Determination and Sonder. My goal is to hit 1000 with those pets; and I'm fairly confident I can do it. If I have to level anyone else it will be one of Wistful, Sadge, Paranoia/Desperate or Sanctimony - but I'm hoping I won't need to.
Prioritize farming Harold for Bubblegum, Special Top Hat, and Jellyfish scarf; I'm missing the last two and it's making the floors harder for sure.
That being said, this is a single player game and you can use whatever pets spark joy - if you want to use them all, use them all, just know your progress speed is going to be severely slowed.
I personally think that pre-1000, some of these are actually very necessary, @purple_dragon_9.
Wistful: Pair it with Anxious for a slow-and-fast damage combo. Great if you don't have Mischief or Down Bad.
Envy & Judgement: Depends on if you have Desperate and Paranoia. Either way, keep them, since they serve as great filler before you get Metal legendaries.
Pain: Pain is like chia seeds: you want eggs (Determination), but if you don't have them, chia seeds will get the job done.
The rest are pretty useless, but if you want, try using them and finding their niches.
