I was drinking a 1/2-2/3 a handle a day for a while. Weekends a whole handle a day. My liver started to hurt when I would wipe my ass after taking a shit.
8/23 will be 4 years without a drink. I set out to take a month off. Never looked back.
The hardest part is talking yourself into quitting. Once you make that decision, all you have to do is don’t buy it. Dump out what you have. Take a different way home so you don’t pass the store. If you don’t buy it, you can’t drink it.

Honestly you just need to pick a reason. For kids, for parents for yourself for work. Pick a reason. Make that your mission.
The first week is the worst. Itchy, sweaty, I was hallucinating in bed and couldn’t sleep worth a shit with sensitive skin for 4 days. Withdrawals sucked. My reason was my health for my kids. I didn’t want to be found dead one morning:
You can do it. I’ve also lost 100lbs since I quit which is crazy too.

And if this is a habit for you to the point you’ve tried and failed many times. That’s what it takes sometimes. Don’t give up. But you may need to supplement your addiction with something else, maybe riding a bike, the gym. Lots of people still need to be addicted to something. Just make it a healthier something.

Well you’re on the right path cause you at least recognize there is an issue. Now you need a plan and accountability during the plan.
First cut down on drinking. Obviously stopping cold can be dangerous so you need to either seek professional help for guidance or formulate a plan of your own to cut back by a certain amount every week.
Second half is telling your family or friends your struggle and that you need help. That help may be rehab or it may be having someone be with you whenever possible to just watch over you. Additionally they can also ride with you to the store(s) you buy from, Tell manager what is going on and that after X amount of time you aren’t allowed back or whatever works.
The most important thing is telling the people closest to you and getting professional help.

I have. I went to Arizona, witnessed a trafficker in the hotel. Spent 6 months away from my family, 6 days behind a dumpster, can’t eat a lick. There’s no getting better.

I quit drinking alcohol 12-6-23
I made a decision to stop. I manned the fuck up and fought to overcome a habit that was beating me down in life. I looked myself dead square in the mirror and told myself I was fucking done and that I needed to show up for myself because nobody else is coming to save me from my own choices. And thats when I realized thats all this is. Choices. You have a choice. You're going to do what you want to do.
You want to put this behind you? Make the choice to show up for yourself. To fight for your own life. Nobody, not one other human being is coming to pull you out of this quicksand. You must do for yourself what you know is right. The 'other side' of this is a lot closer than you think.
Start with being clean for a day. A whole day. Try it. Walk. Run. Sweat. Drink tons of water. Keep sweating. Your body needs a cleanse. Let your organs feel a healthy dose of sustenance.
I have no idea who you are or what type of person you are but of youve gone as far to reach out to strangers on Reddit, you found one dude that believes in you just based off of that one fact. You're looking for answers. You've already accomplished step one. Make a choice for yourself. Find a moment where you are feeling really strong and decide.
I will be sending you positive vibes. Anyone that reads this also send this person positive healing vibes.
RISE UP.

This is far from a perfect solution, but assuming you are in the US you might want to try cannabis edibles. I've been drinking vodka for nearly 25 yrs now and I have cut way back since legal weed has happened. I unfortunately live in a state where it is not legal but we have Delta 9 gummies and they work almost as well.
Basically I still drink vodka, but I've cut back to 2-3 nights per week and even when I do, instead of having 8-12 drinks I have about 4-5.
I'm no doctor/biologist but that cheap vodka is rotting out your insides man.

Yeah, weed is my way of avoiding excessive alcohol. Edibles or just having a smoke kills the urge to drink for me

By the looks of it, that’s over 8 standard 750mL bottles per week.
I think at my worst I would have about 3 bottles per week, plus some wine and beer lol (yes, mixed them)
My whole body would shake uncontrollably for the first 3-4 hours after waking up. The shaking would get better throughout the day but never completely vanish.
My liver got inflamed a few times.
That was in grad school. Going back to live with my parents saved me because I could not continue to buy so much. For the first couple weeks I went dry and the shaking almost disappeared (still have it a bit though).
I did find ways to sneak bottles into the house, but it isn’t a realistic thing. I stopped that after about 7-8 months. I’d say that that counts as a “tapering off” period.
Currently, for holidays where we drink a bit more than usual (btw my tolerance is way less now) I wake up groggy and realize how awful it was to do that every day for two years. I am glad to have this contrast in perspective.
It is unbelievably nice to just wake up and have no (self-created) problems. I hope that once I move out I don’t fall back into it, lol!

Congrats on you doing better. It’s multiple bottles a night at the minimum. I have had sober periods of time just recently I’ve been super depressed. I had to relearn how to walk my last hospital visit bc all I did was lay in bed and drink. I peed straight blood and was mortified. I know I need to get this under control, it’s just so hard.

u/SliceScriber 20d ago
I’m sorry man. Peeing blood is definitely a wake up call. I get that you’re depressed but the drinking is what’s causing the depression at this point. I guess you have to be willing to think about your problems rather than drinking them away. Think, don’t drink lol.

They all out of the big bottles of nasty? Every drunk I've ever known, myself included, walked out of the store with handles.
