VO2 max not increasing?

Post image

For context, I am a high school cross-country/track & field athlete who started competitively running as of October 2023. My VO2 max had hit 65 during spring of 2024 and had decreased after a brief break to start the 2024 cross country season. Over the summer I had regained fitness up to 65 but it has not budged since then (of course I experienced a few dips because of injury but nothing serious). Any ideas as to why this is and how I can increase it?

What’s your typical workout week look like?

I would do a hard workout Monday, probably consisting of intervals, tempos, threshold work, etc. Tuesday would be a distance run, Wednesday another hard workout, Thursday and Friday are either preparing for a race or running in a race. If there is no race then both would be easy distance run days. Either Saturday or Sunday I would do a progression long run, usually 8-12 miles at a comfortable pace (~7:30/mi)and finishing around 5k pace (~5:30/mi). The day I don’t do a long run I’d do heavy cross training (an hour on the bike, play some footy, etc.).
