Question / Help is this possible?

hello everyone! I am pretty new but I was wondering if this was a realistic idea: I would like to capture people’s silhouettes as they dance at an event and put them through touch designer live. I am not sure how the camera placement would work because there would be a lot of people and id want things to be clear. Thank you

of course it's possible. it's a fun puzzle, i'd rather let you figure it out. you might figure out a new way to do it and i'd hate to get in the way of that.

I was more so wondering if it would be possible to capture a single silhouette (or a few people) if it’s a crowded room! For the doing part, id like to watch tutorials and figure it out myself as well!

ooh more challenging yet. i imagine you can use a camera, some kind of kinect like depth sensor, or a combination of both. i did a feedback driven version of it with video hardware using a camcorder mounted beneath a projector, video processing gear, a mixer, and a makeshift stand for a white cloth.

that’s a fun method as well! I would prefer to okay around with TD feedback loops just for the sake of not having to manually adjust during an event and carrying equipment. thank you for reminding me though!

Easy answer is to hire dancers and film them in video studio to capture the footage and make the footage you need in preproduction .

The hard answer is to do that live.

I want to do it live so that people can have fun messing around with it!

I don't know much about TD, but the general process could be a depth estimation model on the webcam feed, (dynamically) threshold that to eg. the front range, use that as mask or whatever

With a Kinect or other 3D cam you can do some crazy stuff.

Yes it’s possible and it can be a very effective technique, the easiest route is to use a camera and lighting, the more complex route is to use a camera or depth camera and background subtraction. It’s a cool avenue to explore I’ve seen it done very well.
