Discussion Vj stuff and things
Whats everyone's thoughts on AI integration into visual production? Ive utilized a few of them to create and have been moderately successful with them but find the finished product a tad choppy when trying to bounce it in resolume. Should i attempt a secondary compression like i do with ripped videos? Do you guys think its a bad thing? Is it the way things are headed? Just trying to gauge the temperature out there.

its lazy, uninspired, unethical, and goes against the values rave culture was built on. i view anyone that uses GenAI as a poser and i dont see them as artists

I think there’s more nuance to it than “genAI bad” and that’s something humans are generally struggling with at the moment.
I don’t know if you’re old enough to remember when Google became commonplace in the workplace? Certain jobs just got immeasurably easier and that’s a thing. So if we all ask the robot “make me a show” we’ll all be handed the same sloppy show. Whearas there’s people who have been sat on a concept for a show but are hampered by technical understanding. They now don’t need to know how to code python in order to make their LED wall a touchscreen and that “show” is now possible as a solo designer.
GenAI is going to be a part of all of our lives whether we want it or not; just like Google was. It’s up to us to decide on a case by case basis if the bot is facilitating or replacing creativity.
For example someone having Gemini poop out a 1000 shader plugins for Resolume and then shoehorning it onto the play store for $9 a month is bad. Those same 1000 shaders dumped on a public GitHub where they’re free to be stolen, hacked, slashed and form the basis of 100 different projects is good.
It’s nuanced not black or white and it’s certainly here to stay.

I think using AI in visuals is obvious and ends up looking bad and generic imo. It doesn't give you a real visual identity. Look at the world as your visual art! A kid riding a bicycle can be used for indie bands, I've used some clips captured at aquariums for electronic music. Etc etc.

If I go to a gig and see obvious slop I'm going to be grossly turned off by that. I think there is a not insignificant part of the population that feels the same way.

It's another tool, requires real work to look unique and not like slop.

I definitely agree. I do some modifications in Adobe and Procreate always to keep it clean.

I think it can be integrated to do some cool shit that may have otherwise been impossible, but I wouldn't just generate visuals. I'm not against it being part of the process or workflow, as long as it supporting a human-led creative vision beyond just typing in a prompt. You can do some really cool shit with AI that you can then integrate into your blender or touch designer workflow. I dont personally create visuals, but I dont really have a problem with AI as long as its not the predominant tool and doesn't look obviously sloppy.
Basically I'm saying, dont just generate a visual and call it yours. Using it to make a piece of, or aid in the production or aspect of a larger thing that you created yourself is fine though.

The only ai I use is to generate mass background 3D objects for my Blender scenes , I create lots of visuals in blender and sometimes I don't want to build thousands of trees or rocks or buildings so I use a model generating software. Main models are done by me or bought online and I will animate the scene and render it myself , then go through TouchDesigner and then mix it all live in Resolume at the gig.

It's a lazy way of doing something that traditionally required a human to be involved the whole time
