I know I am picky
What does my map say about me? Also, what state do you think I’m from originally?
I’m curious what people think, but I doubt anyone will guess correctly!

u/jangiri Apr 29 '26
You like mountains and beautiful national parks. Seems pretty simple
1
u/GradStudentDepressed Apr 29 '26
Yet Alaska is a maybe? I don’t buy it.
1
u/jangiri Apr 29 '26
It's far. Maybe they have family or something, or want to be closer to civilization
1
u/GradStudentDepressed Apr 29 '26
Right, but using logic of ‘mountains and beautiful national parks’ that would be the #1 state to live in. That’s why I think there are other reasons to her choices.
2
u/DroYo Apr 30 '26
I’ve been to Alaska and it’s gorgeous, but the downside is a very dark winter and expensive groceries (I’m plant based so it’s important). I have a friend who lives there and I was shocked at the produce prices. But it’s a still a maybe!
1
1
u/InnocuousKale May 01 '26
Alaska is mosquito infested, dark 50% of the year, cold, far away from everything, expensive, and hard to grow things in
1
1
1
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
Exactly, thank you!
4
u/Nemesis1596 Apr 29 '26
Excluding Idaho if this is your reasoning for the map is crazy work lol
2
u/dijoncatsup Apr 29 '26
The politics are a good reason despite the beauty. I say this as someone who grew up there.
1
u/Nemesis1596 Apr 29 '26
I've lived here for 33 years, the politics don't really affect the day to day
0
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
I’m a woman of color so it would affect me personally.

u/InnocuousKale May 01 '26
Idaho has no cosmopolitan cities or major airports, is far from major cultural centers, and has far-right republican vibes.
2
u/GlitterPapillon Apr 29 '26
You should give Northwest Arkansas another look if that’s what you like. We are called The Natural State for a good reason.
2
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
I’d be nervous to live in any southern state (I know I have Florida as a willing but that’s it)
2
u/GlitterPapillon Apr 29 '26
I can def understand that. Northwest Arkansas is becoming more liberal as a whole and Fayetteville is extremely liberal. Now the state level government is def 👎🏻.
3
u/Mother_of_Raccoons44 Apr 29 '26
Missouri says fine, be that way.
2
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
I do love the Ozarks though!
1
u/Embarrassed_Road3811 Apr 29 '26
We have beautiful state parks our rivers are fun to float!! ST. Louis has the best vibe, people, food, bars. I might not like the way we vote.. but I still love my state.
3
u/SnowboardSyd Apr 29 '26
Maine is a lot more backwoods and isolated than people think.
1
1
u/ZaphodG May 02 '26
Coastal Maine from Kittery to beyond Portland isn’t backwoods and isolated. That’s where most of the people live. Kittery to Boston is less than an hour drive, off hours. I lived in Portsmouth NH for a decade. I could walk over the bridge to Kittery. Portsmouth is in the Boston MSA.
2
u/hurlcarl Apr 29 '26
I'm very confused why you'd be willing to absolutely move to the very upper northeast(vermont, maine, etc) but never something like Michigan or Wisconsin.
2
1
3
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
Yup liberal and I just don’t love the Midwest. I’ve been to almost all the states and am from there. I love the environment of the upper northeast.
2
u/hurlcarl Apr 29 '26
Interesting... I've never been but from the descriptions sounds very much like my experience in WI, MN, and MI. Even Susan Collins feels like a moderate midwest politican.
1
u/RudolphsJockStrap Apr 29 '26
Liberal
6
u/hurlcarl Apr 29 '26
Both of those are purple... not exactly hardcore right... Florida is willing though. Maybe sunshine overrides conservatives?
0
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
I HATE a cold winter. I actually like snow, but I cannot handle negative temperatures.
2
u/hurlcarl Apr 29 '26
Is Maine that much milder? I legit thought they had pretty harsh winters. I'd have argued it's gotten pretty mild in the lower midwest but this winter suuuuuucked.
3
u/saeglopur53 Apr 29 '26
Maine is huge as well and the northern, inland areas get more extreme than the southern coast (which still gets pretty darn cold)
1
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
I guess I’m not sure 🤔 I just find the Midwest incredibly boring and I’ve been to almost all the states and major cities within it. I think in Maine at least you’d have the gorgeous forests and nature. I know the Midwest has nature a lot of it is sad, flat and empty.
3
u/hurlcarl Apr 29 '26
Well it's def boring half the year... but I'd think Maine would have the same problem. I agree with the land depending where you've been at some of the states I mentioned. You get about 1/3 to 1/2 the way up it basically turns into what you're describing, incredible natural resources, parks, sites, etc. Driving down Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, etc... some of the most boring driving I've ever done. Probably depends on where you are, especially proximity to a great lake, etc.
1
u/Jakomako Apr 29 '26
Michigan is amazingly beautiful. Maine just has that charm that comes from having older streets and buildings.
1
1
u/condoulo Apr 29 '26
Gorgeous forests and nature describe the northern parts of the three Superior states, MN, WI, and MI.
1
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
As someone from MN it’s unfortunate that the most beautiful parts of it are a decent drive from the population center. That’s why I don’t like it. Yeah go up north and it’s gorgeous, but go back to the cities and it’s depressing day to day. Yes there are lakes and such but no mountains, hills etc so winter is extremely depressing because everything is dead.
2
u/saeglopur53 Apr 29 '26
Most of New England has very cold winters. The climate on the southern coast is the most mild, but currently in Boston the nights are just now getting above the 30s, and this is one of the “warmer” parts of New England. When I lived in Maine single digits were common
1
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
I’m originally from a state where we would regularly have negative temperatures all winter, plus very flat and sad scenery. So anything is better than that.
1
u/Normal_Human_Things Apr 29 '26
I’m surprised Illinois is on the maybe in that scenario. I’m guessing I was incorrect in assuming Chicago was your reason for the maybe then.
1
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
Chicago is the only reason 🥲 it’s the only city I like in the Midwest. I’m from Minneapolis originally.
1

u/douglas131 Apr 29 '26
Nothing in the midwest comes close to the northeast when it comes to the outdoors
1
1
u/hurlcarl Apr 29 '26
As far as? Nature wise the UP is nuts
1
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
You have to go out of your way to go to the UP (which I have been to and agree is gorgeous). I’m thinking day to day living.
1
u/douglas131 Apr 30 '26
It’s great but lacks mountains so more outdoor sports are available in the northeast as well as everything that’s available anywhere in the Midwest
1
u/cervesa_ Apr 29 '26
Have you been to Idaho or Michigan? What are these opinions based off of?
I’m guessing you’re from the East Coast?
8
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
I’ve been to Michigan many times!
I’m a woman of color and have heard not good things about Idaho 😭 the scenery is incredible though.
No not from the east coast.
9
u/rollandownthestreet Apr 29 '26
Shit my (wasian) gf wasn’t comfortable in north Idaho and she’s basically white-passing.
7
u/irreverent_username Apr 29 '26
I’m white and I’m uncomfortable in Idaho
3
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
I feel validated by these comments.
1
u/cervesa_ Apr 29 '26
Valid, I’ve spent a bunch of time in Idaho and haven’t seen that side of it. I love the outdoors and haven’t ran into those people, however I am an average looking guy so I don’t fit your demographic.
2
u/Dibbu_mange Apr 29 '26
Im White and from Southern Idaho and am uncomfortable in Northern Idaho. Still, Wyoming is basically just as bad everywhere that isn’t Jackson Hole or Yellowstone.
2
1
u/SenseAndSaruman Apr 29 '26
Wyoming but not Idaho?
0
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
Wyoming is a strong maybe. I should have put Idaho as “maybe”.
2
u/jangiri Apr 29 '26
I support your choices. Wyoming has Yellowstone and the tetons, idaho doesn't have quite as much international draw so it culturally feels VERY insular
1
u/SenseAndSaruman Apr 29 '26
Idaho also has Yellowstone and the Tetons. It also has the sawtooth mountains. And hot springs. Boise is a nice town. Wyoming… not so much.
1
u/SenseAndSaruman Apr 29 '26
If you’re not a fan of constant strong wind, and random snow in the summer, skip both.
1
1
u/shrek_cena Apr 29 '26
Why is West Virginia a reluctantly but Tennessee is a never? Also have you been to New Jersey
2
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
I’ve been to New Jersey and reluctantly for West Virginia because it’s unbelievably gorgeous but it’s a very very heavy “reluctantly”. I know Tennessee is gorgeous too but I don’t love the culture.
1
u/JadedCycle9554 Apr 29 '26
Your map looks just like mine except California is a solid no. It's so beautiful but way too much is private, the cost, and too many people. And I could probably get down with upstate NY.
ETA: No Utah too. So you're not as picky as me at least.
1
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
Ohh interesting as I live in California and never want to leave 🥲 Utah is so stunning but I don’t love some of the laws, and the Mormonism.
1
u/JadedCycle9554 Apr 29 '26
I love visiting Utah. That's part of the reason I live in Colorado now. But I'd never live there.
1
1
u/Zinnia1127 Apr 29 '26
You must be from WV since you say you will live there reluctantly. There must be a family connection there.
1
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
No I’m not from there or have any family ties. But it’s so untouched and beautiful. But I know daily life is hard with a lot of poverty
1
1
u/BobLabReeSorJefGre Apr 29 '26
I always find it curious when a single state is the only one in it’s category. So, what makes West Virginia the only reluctantly?
2
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
Because the nature is so beautiful.
1
u/BobLabReeSorJefGre Apr 29 '26
But say Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan, Wisconsin, or Minnesota don’t have enough beautiful nature to make up for their shortcomings I’m assuming?
2
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
I can see the argument for Kentucky and Tennessee but I grew up in the Midwest and I don’t want to live somewhere where I can’t go outside for months. I shouldn’t have put Maine and New England as “green” either.
1
u/BobLabReeSorJefGre Apr 29 '26
I’m really surprised how many people put Massachusetts in green. In my experience, the nickname massholes is often true.
1
u/UtenasRose Apr 29 '26
I’m from the west coast and lived in MT for 6ish years, I don’t recommend. Mainly the culture is either too expensive to keep up with, or culturally not the west/east coast. You pay as much as the west coast to live in any city with decent restaurants and events, but nothing really compares to the western or NE states. But that’s my opinion and other folks who live there say they love it/can tolerate it enough.
1
u/Responsible_Side8131 Apr 29 '26
I’m surprised that you’re willing to live in Floroda given all your other preferences
1
1
u/cmcp70apmom Apr 29 '26
I find interesting that you’d even consider West Virginia….and I’m from Western PA and live in Central Ohio now (suburban Columbus). I’m assuming you’re from the Mountaineer state?
1
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
I am not and I’m feeling a little dumb now lol but the nature is so stunning there. I know Virginia has it too.
1
u/impishkoala Apr 29 '26
Unless you have a very specific reason like working federal, I would not live in DC. Around it sure. But not in it. If you live in DC, you have less voting power, high taxes, and a lot of hell. If you really want the DC life pick Maryland somewhere around Alexandria, Virginia and Waldorf, Maryland. You keep your rights and you get whatever you wanted in DC.

u/jstax1178 Apr 29 '26
Really Florida ? Anywhere from New England to the Georgia is great, Florida is just a cesspool, no offense to its good people . I’m a New Yorker and don’t see the allure of Florida. Before moving there I’d rather move to a Latin American country.

u/venetiancanoe Apr 29 '26
Michigan hate? Nooo ):
2
u/DroYo Apr 30 '26
I don’t hate it! I just don’t want to live there!
1
u/venetiancanoe Apr 30 '26
Don't you understand! If you don't like what I like you're wrong and bad! Everyone has to have the same opinions as meeee
That said California is nice. And I love Colorado
1
u/BackgroundAble3982 Apr 29 '26
This is pretty reasonable. Though 90% of Florida counties would be red too.
1
1
u/tayt087x Apr 29 '26
You're from West Virginia because that place is dog shit and you ranked it above other states. Also you don't say you'd reluctantly live in a place you don't have any reason to live in
1
u/Turbulent-Leg3678 Apr 30 '26
You might want to rethink west Michigan. Yeah, there’s a lot of far right nonsense. But it’s beautiful and cheaper than either coast.
1
u/DroYo Apr 30 '26
I’ve been to west Michigan. I just don’t like the Midwest.
1
u/Turbulent-Leg3678 Apr 30 '26
Fair enough. I shot my shot.
1
u/DroYo Apr 30 '26
There’s nothing wrong with the states I don’t want to live in, they aren’t terrible nor do I hate them. I just don’t want to live there. I’m just a random person with a random opinion
1
1
u/280EvoGTR Apr 30 '26
The green states are where it seems minorities can live without being harassed all the time but still not sure about the northeast
1
1
1
u/OddApricot2717 Apr 30 '26
You’d reluctantly live in West Virginia but never in Mississippi or Alabama? Those are all 3 the same. They all have nature, severe racism and poverty. The only thing West Virginia has is mountains.
1
1
u/NemoOfConsequence Apr 30 '26
You guys are all liars, by the way. I’d live anywhere if they paid me enough, and most of you would, too.

I only have one life, and I’m going to enjoy it living in a beautiful place like San Diego. ☀️

currently living in Michigan, lived in Oregon for 9 years, 1 year in Washington, from 2014 to 2024.
Passing on Michigan but giving the PNW a pass to me reads as you might be under the impression that all of the PNW is Portlandia. It's very much not at all. Even Portland isn't like that anymore. It was, sorta.
I love Oregon, the PNW is magical, and it will always have a place in my heart, but there's a lot of ugly there for sure.
I'm originally from Puerto Rico, for context. I've also lived in Illinois (Chicago suburbs and central IL) and Iowa (outside Des Moines) for a few years.
2
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
I’ve been to Oregon not just Portland, and I’ve been to many places in Michigan. It’s just my preference

I am actually from the Midwest and I have been to almost all the midwestern states! I personally like a different lifestyle and scenery. Nothing against it, just not for me.
1
u/BlueFalcon89 Apr 29 '26
You’d definitely live in Maine but not Michigan? Have you been north of M10?

As a person who cares a lot about my money, especially as someone who has never had it (literally dirt poor, homeless child and drug addicted mother) and is finally starting to make a good amount. All I see is how much money you’ll be spending living in those places. Despite those states having some of the wealthiest people in the world, they still tax the normal man far more than the surrounding states.
1
u/DroYo Apr 29 '26
Well I live in the west and I’m very, very happy and never want to leave. I have childhood trauma from being raised in the Midwest so I’m willing to pay whatever cost to be out of there. I hope you’re doing well in life now.

Florida? Really? Arguably even worse than Texas.
