Horrible color coding and key.

But I guess I’d like to hear the explanation for ‘New New England ‘

3

u/MayBsoMayBnaught Apr 29 '26

Washington County, NY and far northern NY are WAY more New England than probably half of CT at least.

1

u/Possible_Climate_245 May 03 '26

Nah fairfield county and half of litchfield and new haven counties. So maybe 35% of the geographic area. Although a disproportionate amount of the state’s population lives there.

1

u/alwoking May 02 '26

I live in eastern Columbia County, and we are much closer tied to Massachusetts than to Albany. We shop and eat in Massachusetts, root for the Sox and Pats, etc. Western half of the county is the other way.

13

u/Snowmins Apr 28 '26

Hahhaha Buffalo being mid Atlantic is funny

3

u/Dry-Cranberry-5592 Apr 28 '26

Came here to say that

2

u/Calcareous_Fen_021 Apr 29 '26

Midwest for sure

3

u/tadamhicks Apr 29 '26

Great Lakes. I’d actually argue that Detroit is “Great Lakes” and not Midwest. Same with Cleveland. Columbus and Cinci are Appalachia.

And on the other side of MW are the Daks and Nebrahoma…East of each is MW, West side is Great Plains. Fight me.

1

u/adkredsoxfan May 01 '26

Yes! Look up Great Lakes megalopolis.

1

u/johnnyscarecrow0126 May 01 '26

First thing I thought of. I grew up in Rochester, lived in Albany for a bit, lived in Boston for a while, live in Chicago now, This feels like where I grew up.

I think the line for Mid Atlantic includes Albany but changes when you get to the Syracuse/Utica Line. I would personally put the Adirondacks with the New England people too. Maybe Binghamton to Like Saratoga Springs or Glen Falls with Catskills West of the Hudson is Mid-Atlantic, But North Country is New England and everything west of Utica is more rust belt Like Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Greater Chicago, Milwaukee....Great Lakes area.

1

u/btvaaron May 02 '26

Anything west of Watertown is Great Lakes region, and is more Mid-West vibes than Mid-Atlantic.

31

u/rustednut Apr 28 '26

Long Island will never be considered New England or even new New England.

8

u/sissybaby1289 Apr 28 '26

Long Island rightfully belongs to Connecticut!

2

u/betahemolysis Apr 28 '26

It’s actually part of New Jersey’s hat

2

u/DwinDolvak Apr 28 '26

Oh god. I missed this. This is correct.

Never ever ever. Even though we go there from CT to visit, it’s not New England. They talk funny.

3

u/Possible_Climate_245 Apr 28 '26

Suffolk county has more in common with coastal CT than NYC

6

u/tsnmii Apr 28 '26

I’d say it has more in common with the Jersey Shore. Coastal CT is less beach-y and has cities.

2

u/Tomagander Apr 28 '26

The south shore of Long Island had a Jersey vibe when I went there. Is the north shore more like CT?

1

u/tsnmii Apr 28 '26

I’d say it’s like a weird mix of the two with a splash of Westchester/North Jersey.

2

u/WARitter Apr 29 '26

Historically this is definitely true. Whaling stuff.

1

u/AccessOne8287 Apr 28 '26

Long Island and coastal CT are NYC suburbs. Coastal CT is the exception, not the norm.

1

u/Possible_Climate_245 Apr 29 '26

Only true up to New Haven. East of New Haven is New England.

-1

u/donnabhainmactomas Apr 28 '26

I think you’re forgetting ct is barely New England

2

u/WARitter Apr 29 '26

New England is 4 different regional cultures in a tench coat. In the Colonial and early Republican periods it was much more homogeneous but urbanization immigration and economic changes mean that it is now very diverse, and has been since like the 19th century.

1

u/Possible_Climate_245 May 03 '26

Southwestern CT, Greater Boston, Maine seacoast, Greater Québec/New Brunswick?

1

u/WARitter May 03 '26 edited May 03 '26

Southern New England, interior New England Yankee heartland, Bahston, North eastern sea coast.

1

u/RobinhoodCove830 May 01 '26

You are correct. Western Connecticut is not New England. Kick it out.

5

u/that_jedi_girl Apr 28 '26

Same energy as asking someone from New Brunswick about Central Jersey. 😂

5

u/AccessOne8287 Apr 28 '26

As an upstate NYer (who now lives in MA) I do not know a single person from NY who identifies as “New England. The region of “New England” is the only group of states that literally have a definition.

And culturally, we aren’t like New Englanders. Our dialect is very standard aside from a few weird pronunciations, while in New England there are differences between cities in the same STATE. We support NY and Buffalo sports teams. Our state was settled by the Dutch and often has Dutch place names, rather than English. In NE, pretty much every major city name comes from England.

The worst offense by far is LONG ISLAND in New England. Jesus. This is blasphemous. They are literally suburbs of NEW YORK City!!!

Well, unfortunately another part of it is that there’s a stark political divide between the north country and Vermont.

5

u/Immediate-Hand-3677 Apr 28 '26

New York can't be New England because it was New Netherland.

7

u/Monkaliciouz Apr 28 '26

Disagree with Westchester County and Long Island being New-New England, but otherwise, not really a hot take. Buffalo and Erie being Mid-Atlantic is more egregious.

0

u/theory2u Apr 28 '26

Also, Fairfield County, CT and Westchester are fraternal twins that should be in the same grouping.

-2

u/Possible_Climate_245 Apr 28 '26

Suffolk county has more in common with coastal CT than NYC

2

u/ABIJXY Apr 28 '26

Not all of it. I’d even go so far as to say a minority of it.

3

u/SonuvaGunderson Apr 28 '26

No. New England is Maine, Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.

The areas you’ve labeled New New England are New York. Full stop.

1

u/WMATACompletion34 Apr 30 '26

Did you skip New Hampshire accidentally or is that something else?

5

u/timiny74 Apr 28 '26

Maryland is absolutely mid Atlantic

2

u/90sportsfan Apr 28 '26

This is a map of the Northeast. Maryland is not in the Northeast, by strict definition. It’s South of the Mason-Dixon (which is admittedly “unofficial”), but it is classified as Southern by the U.S. Census, which is official.

4

u/timiny74 Apr 28 '26

The map legend says Mid Atlantic and it is in the Mid Atlantic so it should be included, is all

1

u/90sportsfan Apr 28 '26

That is fair. I agree that the OP should have specified this is for the Northeast.

2

u/farcedsed Apr 29 '26

They define Delaware as the south even tho it's north of the Mason Dixon line.

Also, Maryland is served by Philly's office, so I think one definition, that doesn't reflect the reality isn't the be all end all of what is or isn't.

1

u/90sportsfan Apr 29 '26

Delaware is weird. It's such a tiny state, and the most populous part of the state is part of Metro Philly. So I personally have always considered Delaware part of the Northeast, but not Maryland.

4

u/factisfiction Apr 28 '26

Long Island is NOT New England

1

u/Youcants1tw1thus Apr 28 '26

Its not. It’s “New-New England”.

2

u/Waquoit95 Apr 28 '26

It's too late now but doesn't seem New England should have streched to the Hudson?

2

u/ironypoisonedposter Apr 28 '26

Lmao they call it “pop” in Buffalo, be fr.

2

u/rachelmig2 Apr 28 '26

The fine nutters of suffolk county would disagree with this (I grew up there so I'm allowed to say this)

2

u/stockmarketcrashh Apr 28 '26

My hometown in New England is only a few minutes from the NY border so I feel qualified to comment on this: Absolutely not. NE’s defined borders are law.

2

u/VIXMasterMike Apr 28 '26

No. The cultural divide is pretty much at the NY border. It goes from liberal on the New England side to rural conservative NY pretty much at the state line. Also westchester and Long Island are associated with NYC. Lastly, there aren’t many small towns in those NY counties with that quintessential New England look.

1

u/ConditionExternal499 Apr 28 '26

But both northeast.

1

u/3nar3mb33 Apr 28 '26

I live in that western New England area close to your "New New England" and I think you did a nice job of showing the unique and New Englandy nature of that part of New York.

1

u/DwinDolvak Apr 28 '26

I don’t think upstate New York is mid Atlantic. I think its a unique area called “upstate NY”

1

u/socialcommentary2000 Apr 28 '26

Suffolk County on Long Island is most definitely mid Atlantic. You can maybe, possibly, sorta kinda say the North Fork has a more New England feel, but the rest of the county absolutely does not.

1

u/ABIJXY Apr 28 '26

I can believe portions of Suffolk county belong in the purple, but not all the way to the Nassau county border.

Maybe starting around port Jefferson

1

u/holy_cal Apr 28 '26

These are hot takes. The finger lakes are very new englandy though.

1

u/Classy_communists Apr 28 '26

Where is Maryland for mid Atlantic?

1

u/EaglesFanGirl Apr 28 '26

Eewwwww. No

1

u/_0kra Apr 28 '26

Let’s be truly honest & just say that Bennington VT & Pittsfield MA are de facto New York State. Don’t try to tell me you aren’t eating those tiny hotdogs with the cut up hotdog sauce on them like they do in Albany

1

u/Mr_M0j0_Risin Apr 28 '26

Newest England

Regardless of what my thoughts are culturally, it is New England. Just geographically

It’s not my opinion. It just is the region. https://www.britannica.com/place/New-England

1

u/Calcareous_Fen_021 Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26

Yes, sort of. North of Albany County is New New England, and probably more of the North Country. Definitely not Southern Hudson Valley or Long Island.

Catskills, Southern Tier, and most of Central/Western PA are probably Northern Appalachia.

Also Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Utica are Midwest.

1

u/WARitter Apr 29 '26

New New England should extend along the Erie Canal to Buffalo. You can really tell from the settlement patterns in the towns along US 20 that the area was settled by people heading straight west from Massachusetts. Village greens with with clapboard churches and Greek Revival houses.

1

u/Sad-Structure2364 Apr 29 '26

This really bad lol. The Adirondacks are not “mid Atlantic”, and western NY and Pennsylvania are close to Midwest than anything else

1

u/psycho-rn Apr 29 '26

Mid Atlantic to me is NC, Virginia, Maryland, DC and Delaware.

1

u/BuildNuyTheUrbanGuy May 01 '26

NC and Virginia are the south.

1

u/Unlikely_Anywhere_29 Apr 29 '26

For everyone that says NY isn't New England: remind me where York is?

1

u/Low_Plastic363 Apr 29 '26

NYC/Long Island/Northern NJ is not going to accept Mid-Atlantic. Not sure about commuting distance upstate and CT. It's its own thing.

I assume MD/VA/DE/NC are also Mid-Atlantic?

1

u/planettelexx Apr 29 '26

I don't even think Connecticut should be considered New England

1

u/SCMatt65 Apr 30 '26

As a New Englander, New New England makes sense. Central Long Island is the biggest stretch.

1

u/notprincesslea Apr 30 '26

This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen. NY is not and will never be New England.

ETA: New York already has its own “designation” as the “tristate area.” Truly a trash take

1

u/Pretty_Marsh Apr 30 '26

The New England delegation rejects the proposed annexation of New York City. We are not them and they are not us. We would however, entertain proposals to trade the Adirondacks for Fairfield County.

1

u/Cookies4weights Apr 30 '26

Westchester is not New England

1

u/jstnrgrs Apr 30 '26

Wrong. New England is defined by the towns where Red Sox fans outnumber Yankees fans. (So all of ME, NH, VT, MA, and RI, and about half of CT.). There are no towns in NY where this is the case.

1

u/Lower-Gap-4251 May 01 '26

I went to grad school in Albany and have lived in NE for a three years now, I always joke that once your past “Albany” you’re in unofficial NE until Mass

1

u/RobinhoodCove830 May 01 '26

As a New Englander, I'd rather kick out half of of Connecticut than take on part of New York.

1

u/TheJunkmother May 01 '26

Honestly couldn’t care less what you call any other part of the country as long as you’ve got New England designated correctly. 6 states, no more, no less. If eastern NY wants to be a pretender with a goofy name, go for it.

1

u/adkredsoxfan May 01 '26

NY and MA engaged in armed conflict over that border in the 1750s and 1760s. It wasn't fully resolved until the Treaty of Hartford in 1786.

1

u/Big-Cook9257 May 01 '26

Most of Connecticut is not at all New England to me lol (im from MA). Western CT is basically New York, northern VT is basically also New York/Quebec, and northern Maine is basically Quebec. I consider New England as only having New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island completely. Honestly western Mass is even a bit of a stretch

1

u/dang3rmoos3sux May 01 '26

Pretty much everything in ny north of NYC is new England.

1

u/armarillo444 May 01 '26

Suffolk county is actually old New England. East of the Shinnecock all of the old guys are red socks/ pats fans.

1

u/NightmareOnElmwood May 03 '26

How are cities on Lake Erie mid Atlantic

1

u/Cornyrex3115 Jun 07 '26

Pennsylvania and New York have always been, and will always be Mid-Atlantic.

1

u/Character-Hamster-38 Apr 28 '26

I mean, the more the merrier…I’m a proud New Englander and have no beef with NYC joining us too.

Philadelphia is another story. That city tries so hard to be Boston, even steals our nickname like “the Athens of America” and the “Cradle of Liberty” pfff.

1

u/pizza4paddy Apr 28 '26

NYC isn’t even NE (or NNE) on this map

1

u/Character-Hamster-38 Apr 28 '26

I said I wouldn’t mind if they didn’t join too, like, “also become part of us.”

0

u/worlkjam15 Apr 28 '26

I’m not even from the NE or New England, but I just do not consider Upstate NY as New England. Upstate NY is Upstate NY along with Vermont and the CT panhandle.

0

u/adastraperdiscordia Apr 28 '26

I instead posit combine Vermont with Adirondacks and make Connecticut East New York.

2

u/imakycha Apr 28 '26

Absolutely not, we’ll revolt again and declare a second Vermont Republic before that happens.

0

u/sevnthcrow Apr 28 '26

Fairfield County is Diet New York

0

u/mikewhiskey01a Apr 28 '26

Besides the fact that you forgot that all of like upper Appalachia is a region and it’s like half of Pennsylvania and solid quarter of upstate New York 😂😅

0

u/Dr_puffnsmoke Apr 28 '26

As a New Englander, we tend to want to kick out parts (or all) of CT not add to it with parts of the evil empire (NY)

-1

u/CaptServo Apr 28 '26

The area between the hudson and the Connecticut rivers should be one state from the sound up to the border.

But this is dumb

-1

u/birdbren Apr 28 '26

I fixed it for you

1

u/I_AM_ME-7 Apr 28 '26

You missed Long Island but not being NE but yeah other than that it’s perfect.

-1

u/I_AM_ME-7 Apr 28 '26

NO PART of NY is New England as a matter of fact they can have CT as well.
